"That bitch took my skull" is still something I quote to this day.
Don't you forgett the "Fire in the motherfucking hole bitches!". Another amazing quote.

My brother-in-law and I still quote it regularly. It's nice to know it isn't just us.
‘That doesn’t seem physically possible.’
‘That’s exactly what Jimmy kept screaming!’
‘THIS DOESN’T SEEM PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE!!!’
I know the dev's had so much on their plate, but wouldn't it have been dope if there was a "9 shot" difficulty where 50 can only get shot 9 times before he dies lol
Just to be sure. 9 shots he survives, right? It's the 10th that kills him?
that would've been crazy cool

@@RoboitoAM Screw you man, i was eating my dinner and you just making me choked
This would be so great tho
I gotta say, hearing 50 Cent say "You heard him, make a level with helicopters in" is a hilariously wholesome dad moment.
And in another sense, you could also argue that a young kid who plays games like that would be the best judge of fun-ness because he's probably not going to suck up, and would be more reflective of a target demo than some specially certified play tester. Completely disregards the previous design allowances and analysis process, but it's a pretty solid devils advocate strategy
So fun story, 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand is a running joke with me and my friend since he worked at THQ during this game's development. (He last worked on Saints Row: The Third PR stuff and was there right until the company imploded). So he has all these random stories about when THQ scooped up the project and started ramping up promotion for the game.
Some stories include 50 visiting THQ and the top brass / management sucking up to him big times, all while 50 had the biggest ego; tons of cardboard cutouts of 50 littering the offices with everyone trying to get them out of the way; and my favorite, everyone getting a copy on release, but nobody wanted the game, so you would come into the office in the morning and find a stack of unwanted 50 Cent: BOTS on your desk, leaving you no choice but to find another person to ditch them on. The game was like some sort of cursed item among the office.
Also THQ related, but apparently after they imploded, you can see the abandoned HQ office my friend worked at in Parks and Recreation. Specifically the episode where Aziz Anzari and Ben Schwartz start their own business, their office was in the lobby / main area of the THQ building. He thought it was hilarious because the two set up a mismanaged failing business, in the grave of a mismanaged failing business.
can you tell me why THQ insisted to work with Nickelodeon?, it would be great to shed a light in this topic.
@@rohgadriscol
I sort of can, but the THQ × Nickelodeon partnership started before he worked there. So please don't take this as like the authoritative source!
So for background, Nickelodeon's parent company was Viacom and when it was time to make video game tie-ins, games were either contracted out or developed internally at a Viacom studio. But the Viacom studio was eventually shut down due to poor sales.
THQ used to be in the toy business (they were known as Toy Head Quarters before shortening to THQ). So they had developed relations with companies like Nickelodeon. And since they were moving more into games, they were a company Nick contracted out to. Somewhere in the same time, THQ was also grabbing up other licenses, including at the time the WWE (WWF technically since that was mid 90s?) THQ's tie in brand games were ultimately really successful, which in turn was profitable for the companies who owned the IPs.
So it wasn't that THQ insisted on working with Nickelodeon, it was more the other way around mixed with join interest. THQ at this point at the end of the 90s was one of the biggest game publishers. And Nickelodeon knew THQ was successful at handling their IPs and by giving THQ first rights / a master contract for their IPs it was easier to get games made quickly and out the door alongside shows and movies. (Think like how Jimmy Neutron had tie ins for every platform rushed out alongside the movie.) Also, this way Viacom saw this as a way to save money by not having to handle development internally, since their own studio was closed down and wouldn't need to be revived.
You should still be able to find interviews, but this partnership is supposedly what kickstarted the creation of Tak. As THQ said they had huge success with original IPs and with Nickelodeon's on board they could do a new game / TV brand. THQ would put in a large amount of money and resources to make big hitting game and Nickelodeon would follow up with a heavily promoted show. Nickelodeon would hold the IP rights, but both companies would see shared revenue.
That said, we all know how THQ was mismanaged into implosion. A lot of people working at or with the company had no idea it was about to go bankrupt until the company went public with it. So other companies had already bought the rights to THQ's IPs and contracts, with Activision Blizzard going for the Nickelodeon contract. Supposedly they saw it as easy money, as in put a little bit of money into a rushed tie in and make big bucks since they would be big name IPs.
My friend mentioned once that he and his coworkers were told at the very last minute they would lose their jobs. So a lot of them tried to move with the projects to other companies. He was in talks to move with the South Park game (The Stick of Truth), but it went to Ubisoft and apparently they said no to him and others.
@@HighwaterTrousers one more question, do you know about the project InSane from Volition?, i discovered recently about this and it says guillermo del toro was going to be involved.
I don't know if or when this comment will reach you but...Do you or your friend know anything about Juiced 2? More specifically, what went wrong with its development that caused it to be such a letdown compared to the first game, from the questionable driving physics to what can only be described some rather baffling design choices, not to mention the plethora of unused content still in the game files (several custom items such as rims and bodykits, and even a whole car)? If there's any story to be told behind any of that, I'd be genuinely interested to hear it.
The fact that he needed a game made of him and demanded a helicopter in the game simply because his son thought it would be cool, goes to show just how ego driven he is
YO FIDDY, HIT THAT BIG-ASS RAMP
50 Cent: What Happened... To my Diamond Encrusted Skull?!

Gotta be honest, if someone pitched a game to me and said, "You're in this, and you're after a gem-encrusted skull", I'd probably sign off on that, too, as that is hilarious.
50's quick rise in the game was crazy. Like within 5 years he was the talk in eveyone's conversations. He became a movie star, produces a hit show and has his own game. He never sleeps lol.
There's an interview where he mentions he got an $80mill check.
The interviewer responds :"why are you still working?"
50" that's the kind of talk that made me leave my ex wife"

@@TheArtunism You could actually make the argument that 50 cent is the most impressive TV executive currently working. It sounds crazy when you say it out loud. But, there's a valid argument to be made for it when you consider how much he has on television and how quickly he did it.
Let's not forget his vitamin water deal and finessing the court into thinking he was broke after a lawsuit lol 50 is always hustling wish he didn't fall off with the music.
I had no idea this game failed, I remember it was a bonkers concept that felt like it could only be done in videogames, and everyone I knew who played it enjoyed it.
It was so much fun. I never played the first one though.
The first one sold well but critics shit on it. The second one got praised more but didn't sell.
I only played the first one and, at the time, figured the sequel would just be more of the same. I wasn't much of a fan, thought it was a little too repetitive. Might have to give Blood On The Sand the ol' college try

Two twists of irony from this one:
1) Blood on the Sand, though it bombed commercially, would go on to become a highly regarded cult classic

I honestly really respect that this game a whole lot more knowing everything the team had to do and all the hoops they jumped through.
To sum this statement up:
"Give Fitty Jr. his damn helicopters."
I like how nothing bad actually happens during development. The game just gets stuck in publishing hell and releases too late. The direction shift goes fairly smoothly, the demands from 50 and his son don't hurt the game, and the game scored well (basically top 10% at this point) and they don't actually get screwed by Blizzard. Just goes to show you, if even 1 things goes wrong, it can collapse the whole tower.
It's a nice change of pace that the dev team didn't seem to be abused or crunched or dealing with bad office conditions during the main dev cycle. Just good planning, well thought out and professional game development, for once
I love how "Let's randomly stick a rapper into all of our Middle East assets built for an unrelated game" turned out to just be a perfectly fine, practical choice. Honestly, they should probably make a cheesy action movie of it.
I was the Edge journalist who scooped the six-year-old story. To date, the best game development anecdote I've been told in my whole career.
The full story is in the April 2017 edition of Edge.
My thanks and respect for your work in video game journalism, Mr. Smith.
Thank you for bringing this moment of hilarity to all of our lives.
"That bitch took my skull!" and "Yo Fiddy, jump over dat big-ass ramp!" are still in my personal vocabulary.
Moral of the story: Don't let a celebrity's kid do the QA on your video game ☕
Truth be told the kid was right but it was too late into development. Variety in games are good.
"Yo 50, jump over this big-ass ramp!"
*explosions from a tiny-ass slope*
Honestly, this was one of the best co-op experiences I had on the xbox 360. Absolutely hilarious spamming of the taunts and solid controls made this a blast. Thanks for the explanation regarding why there were so many helicopter boss fights. It all makes perfect sense now lol

Such a shame 50 Cent and Activision ruined the game. This was a big improvement over Bulletproof in every way apart from the soundtrack. Funny that Matt mentioned Bulletproof wasn't like Grand Theft Auto as according to the game script I own and the creative director, the game WAS supposed to be Grand Theft Auto but with 50 Cent's name on it. That game had a VERY rough development and it really should get its own Wha Happun episode. I'm willing to share info and assets I acquired.

There might be a power game
This game fits snug into the "I hate this game, but I love this game" category. It's not great or even good, but it's so damn fun and so unintentionally funny.
I'm pretty sure the humor is 100% intentional.
I always wondered, does 50 and g unit actually have great sense of humor or are they the butt of the joke. Either way i love this game, but couldnt finish the 1st one.

I love these games. There's something special to be able to actually play someone elses midlife crisis. The thing is, in Bulletproof I laughed WITH Fiddy, in Blood On The Sand I laughed AT him. It was hilarious, but it felt better laughing with him.
I fucking loved this game. I was working at Gamestop and remembered it came out. I rented it and was shocked how fun it was.
I do love that he specifically said "make me really hard to kill, I don't want to die easily cause I'm a badass"
I actually kinda like this game as a trashfire.
So blood on the sand was basically a huge happy accident. Wish it had a release on steam. Always heard it was a solid action shooter that was fun action movie style antics.
Just got a copy recently for PS3...it's one of the best times I've had ina game, just fun, bodies dropping, music blaring, taunts constantly! 🙏💯 Love it!
I can't believe this came out in 2009. This is the 2005iest looking game I've seen since Shadow the Hedgehog.
I got this game for my PS3 after CheapyD on cheapassgamer mentioned that it was an inexpensive game that was also great mindless fun. I totally agree with that opinion, and some of the songs for the soundtrack are still stuck in my head to this day in a good way after hearing them repeat so many times. I wouldn't mind playing through it again actually.
It was waaay more fun than bulletproof
This game is actually a phenomenal idea. They kind of stumbled backwards backwards into a brilliant, meta, semi ridiculous but cool concept.
50 cent has had a long career, but that was probably the bottom of his career in 2009/2010. If that game had come out 5 years earlier or 5 years later, I think it could have been number one. Hell, if they remastered it right now and released it (with current gen graphics) it would probably do significantly better with all of his popularity around his TV projects and businesses.
I really hope someone kept a copy of the Robert Ludlum vertical slice demo. It was a really nice effort with some cool set pieces. IIRC there was a bit with a tank entering into the gameplay space. I also remember being impressed with the use of shaders at the time where the rain (or was it snow) falling on the gun barrel and then evaporating as the player shot.
I was pretty gutted that the game didn’t go into full production. There was hope that Robert Ludlum could become a bit of a Tom Clancy type brand.
Well, seeing what Ubisoft did to the Tom Clancy brand, I think Ludlum would be glad that his name wasn't desecrated
After 8 years or maybe 10. I finally I understand where the 50 cent model came from. People used this model a lot with some Waw zombies maps.
This game was my first experience working in the games industry, where I was a QA tester for 1 night to get some experience under my belt. I got paid in pizza...never received the pizza, but it did get my foot in the door.
The big mystery I'm wondering is: I Am Alive. I think it's a very well made game. It was in development hell for a time, then the publisher finished it in house, so all the interesting threat based combat mechanics were probably made in the process of salvaging the content.
This game was a wonderful surprise for me. Not being a big fan of his music. I am however a big fan of shooting the hell out of things and cursing with the push of a button. Its so bonkers that it's wonderful and I'm happy to learn that even the process of it coming to be was bonkers.
"50 Cent's first foray into The Digi-Verse...."
Hol'up, I must've missed that season of Digimon.
A friend and I saw this game once long ago and we had to pick it up and play it. We weren't 50 Cent fans, I'd never listened to his music, or even rap in general. But the game was so dumb and goofy it was worth a try, and honestly the mechanics, the gameplay, the gun play etc, was all done really well. I can't believe the video leaves out that there is a dedicated button to making 50 swear whenever you hit it. And his swearing is an upgradable feature! It was dumb and over the top and it was done really well and enjoyable to play.
Though finding out the helicopter and driving parts were forced additions makes sense, as they were way less enjoyable and polished than the rest of the game.
I can't believe saying "there is a swear button" is the one thing that has sold this franchise to me.
Honestly remember having a decent time with this one, more than I was expecting anyway
I remember playing through this with my buddy and neither of us were fiddy fans…but with no expectations we actually had a good time with it…especially with the awesome voice overs. “Dayum fiddy!” 😂😂😂
This came out around the time I worked in Games retail and was addicted to getting achievements. I was actually surprised how fun the game turned put to be!
There needs to be another 50 Cent game. Blood on the Sand was great mindless shooter fun!
We need a remaster of these games.
Damn dude I wish they would have kept making 50 Cent games. After all these years we'd have a goldmine of batshit games with all kinds of stuff thrown into it at 50s whim.
He did say he's open to a third game
Honestly, I found the game fun at the time. I heard how bonkers the story was and had to give it a try.
The music for the trailer is awesome!
Growing up, my friend had this game and we had a blast playing it just because of the gimmick alone of playing as 50 cent. Had no idea this was a bomb!
I first learned of this game thanks to ChipCheezum's Let's Play of this game. It was a fun one
1st time a sponsor actually interested me and wanting me to back it up. Thank you Matt, that documentary looks really good and interesting to watch. Edit : I think I also recognized Pertubator in the trailer. 2nd edit: It's Carpenter Brut, always get those 2 confused.
"The man who represents change: 50 Cent" is an amazing line that made me laugh out aloud.
Is there a reason why it changed from Wha - What and Happun - Happened? It felt like the perfect on brand name for some of these failing projects.
Edit: I didn’t even notice it’s been changed for around 5 months now lmfao.
People complained about the name. It actually dissuaded them to click on the series. The change also now makes it easier for search results.
Didn't even notice but to add to what Matt said, I actually avoided videos with that title cause it just seemed like another youtuber trying too hard to be funny. (no disrespect meant) I found a channel like that just yesterday, dude was over-reacting to every little thing. Anyways eventually I watched one of Matt's and ended up binging a good chunk of his channel.
@@MattMcMuscles With search results, this makes sense. It's sad that the name dissuaded people - It didn't dissuade me, but that's probably because I knew Matt already.
I, personally, sometimes use the Wha Happun and What Happened titles interchangeably, but I often stick to the latter since, as Matt said, it's easier to look up videos with that title.
Also, has anyone else here noticed that Matt has updated the thumbnails of some of the older What Happened episodes so that they now have the updated name of the show and the use of Matt's current avatar? As of this writing, the Daikatana, Sonic 06, Resident Evil 6, and the first Fallout 76 video-among a few others-have been updated in this fashion, and I reckon Matt will eventually update even more of the older What Happened thumbnails this way. I guess it's being done to help with the current branding of the show, which is pretty neat in my book!
I didn't notice either, it'll always be Wha Happun in my heart
I played through this game with my best friend and had a good time he’s now since passed and I look back on allot of time playing co-op with fondness
To be fair to fiddy's son, the game is bloody boring just being third person the whole time. These kind of linear, set piece rollercoaster games need a handful of different playstyles to stop them from being dull.

Imo The big thing that killed blood and the sand and bullet proof wasn’t any developmental or marketing issues. The problem was that gaming press simply weren’t in on the joke. I remember critiques and myself at the time absolutely blasting these games we didn’t see an intentionally ridiculous gta style 3rd person shooter. We saw 50 cent being an absolute narcissist. Gaming press saw 50 cent collecting posters of himself in the Middle East talking about how the Afghan war “ain’t shit compared to Brooklyn” and thought “wow 50 cent is such a narcissist, meat head ass hole” when more likely the dev crew and 50 himself were probably going for a duke nukem vibe. Things like the cussing button that probably should’ve made it obvious, just feed into this image of 50 cent demanding game devs make him more “badass” it’s still not the best game by any standard but it was certainly over hated at the time imo.
that's not really true. The game got a 70ish average, which is what it should get. Like the developer of the game said themselves, 50's stock was way, way down in 2009.
