    Jan is an amazing composer and keyboard player. His guitar emulation on keyboard continually inspires me. I don't think Jan gets enough credit for being a great drummer as well - he played drums on many of his collaborations with Jeff Beck.

    Gilmour actually played bass on a significant portion of the Floyd tunes in the 70’s.

    • @lapelcelery42
      @lapelcelery42 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Not a particularly significant portion apart from on the Wall IMHO. He played bass on a LOT of The Wall, on Pigs and Sheep for Animals (playing the part Roger wrote for Sheep because Roger wanted to play the electric Rhythm for that song) and doubled Roger on One of these Days from Meddle. There's no record of him playing anything else that I can think of. Roger usually abdicated his duties on those songs to track other instruments, a lot of electric and acoustic guitar on The Wall and Animals, and synth on loads of tracks from the 70s.

    • @Michael_Sinclair
      @Michael_Sinclair 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @ThomasWilliamsMusic that could be. I had read an interview that Guy Pratt did a while back where he claimed that Gilmour played bass on “nearly half” of the original Floyd albums and Dave was also once quoted as saying:
      “He {Roger} had developed his own limited, or very simple style. He was never very keen on improving himself as a bass player and half the time I would play bass on the records because I would tend to do it quicker. Right back to those early records; I mean, at least half the bass on all recorded output is me anyway. [...] Rog used to come in and say, 'Thank you very much' to me once in a while for winning him bass-playing polls.”

    • @NolanEgbert
      @NolanEgbert 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Its pretty well documented that Roger really only played bass out of necessity when they were a 4 piece band. He's a songwriter first and foremost, using his bass live mostly as a prop. Not to say he doesn't play it at all, he just leaves the heavy lifting to another bassist behind him

    • @bpvirgo
      @bpvirgo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do any of you guys know anything about Roger’s cornet/trumpet playing?

    • @lapelcelery42
      @lapelcelery42 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Michael_Sinclair Yes, David has said a few things like that, but I think he's slightly overestimating his contribution, or perhaps specifically talking about the Wall era, when it would have been true to say that. The evidence certainly seems to be against him. Roger is not only documented as the player on the vast majority of tracks, I'd personally say their styles are quite different and it's reasonably easy to tell. I wouldn't put a lot of stock in Guy's opinion on it simply because he wasn't there for those sessions, so he probably got his position on it from Gilmour.

    I can't explain what it is about Jan's compositions.. it's beauty and the beast... Magic and virtuosity. I just love the harmony and melody. It's always amazing and just resonates with me.. Jeff and Jan were such a good combo for this kinda stuff. I can see why Jeff was so enamored with Jan's playing from The Mahavishnu days... Jan was just as much a huge and significant influence on musicians and popular music as someone like EVH, it was Jan that got Jeff into jazz-rock fusion ..I wish Jan would someday get his credit in other music realms..(other than for Miami Vice, which I also love).. RIP Jeff Beck
