Robert Sean Leonard for me was the heart of this movie. I've watched this movie so many times and his performance is just amazing. Re-watch that scene where he's at the play and looking out at the crowd with joy until he notices his dad at the back of the theater and his reaction to that. That was fear. His expression from joy to fear in that moment was great acting.

He had, and has, a wonderfully expressive face, which he rarely got to demonstrate in 'House'. He was in good form in 'Much Ado About Nothing', though.
It is hard to read Neil as other than gay, but that is an exegesis that requires more discussion than a TH-cam comment.

This movie played in June of 1989, right when I graduated high school. I went with my high school friends to see this, in the perfect summer heat and cool of the theatre, it was sold out in the large multiplex. And it hit with such a punch, when the boys were on their desks, the theater was cheering and crying on their feet like at a concert. Thunderous acclaim. It took everyone by complete surprise. We went expecting Robin Williams the comedian. We got Robin Williams the actor, and we all left schooled. This is why Gen X wasn't impressed by YOLO, we already had Carpe Diem.

All the props to *Tom* *Schulman* for stellar writing. ❧ Since you wondered, one reason to learn Latin is that certain ancient texts originated in Latin and some scholars want the option to read those works untranslated, with all their character and nuance. This movie impacted me so hard emotionally, when it was over I went out and sat on my roof in the dark and cried soft silent tears and *felt* what felt like EVERYTHING, and thought about so much, and nothing at all... it's something else man.
I'd also never particularly liked or read poetry before this movie, but the passion of these boys and of Keating sparked a matching passion in me! Now I read and *collect* poetry avidly!
Also, I was personally very impressed at how in-depth and articulate your review was even though you were still freshly digesting it. Like I said above, I had to sit on my roof alone for most of the night, and then I walked around in a stunned trance for like three days LOL.

@@barefootanimist I completely agree. One of the most tragic things about the last couple of generations is that by growing up with the internet and smartphones, friendship that intimate and deep has become so antiquated, most young kids don't even recognize that friendship can be that intimate and affectionate without being romantic! It's SO sad.
My best friend and I have a bond that close, and people think we're lesbian all the time, but we're both 100% straight. Our bond is just as obviously deep and affectionate and intimate as the ones between these boys. I wish everyone could experience friendship like that.

This was filmed near me (Delaware). It got a lot of news coverage while it was being made. I can identify with you and the issues you are having with parents who do not understand wanting to study film. They knew as far back as 5th grade that I had an aptitude for writing. During my freshman year of high school, we read the screenplay for the TV movie "Brian's Song" (A reaction worthy film) that was in our text book. I read it and was hooked and started writing screenplays at 14. I teamed up with a student who wanted to produce and direct. We made movies using Super 8mm film.
I knew this was what I wanted to do and had to fight with my guidance counselor in school to get me into the classes I felt I needed to in order to enhance my writing skills and film experience: Journalism 1 & 2, Creative Writing, Electric Media, Public Speaking. The local news radio station had a 6 week News Studies course on Saturday mornings that culminated with each student writing and reporting a 1 minute news segment that they broadcast on air. I entered a student screenwriting competition sponsored by the radio station's sister TV station and took 3rd place. I was the editor of the school paper. I appeared in a 1-act play and got great reviews from the judges (it was a competition between classes). I found a local talent agent, got head shots and a resume prepared and she got me in the movie "Eddie & the Cruisers" as an extra.
For all that effort, my guidance counselor discouraged me from applying to colleges that I wanted to attend with good communications programs and tried to talk me into going to local colleges (like every body else). My dad said, "I'm not paying for you to go to college to learn that". I kicked around from job to job, got myself into a bit of trouble before going back to a county technical school for broadcasting. I eventually ended up as an editor for ESPN and a regional Sports network here in Philadelphia for 20 years, wrote and produced a few stories that I pitched. I wrote a couple screenplays that won some film festivals and were optioned by some producers (The never did raise funds for the projects and they died slow deaths).
It sucks not having supportive parents or a school faculty. I always felt ashamed and embarrassed by my writing because of it. I resonate a lot with the kids in the film for the same reasons. My advice to you is to "EFF THEM!" Follow your heart and your dreams. Put everything you have into it and tune out the naysayers. Remember, John Lennon's aunt told him that playing guitar is nice, but he'd never make any money at it.

Learning Latin could be important because there are many intellectual disciplines that were originally conceived in latin (roman and medieval times), such as law, anatomy, biology, medicine, philosophy, theology. Words have a meaning and handle a concept itself and somehow there is information lost in translation when you study the same topics in a different language. This is why you can find latin quotes in many university text books.

I remember this movie in the theaters...i remember that i had to drive thirty minutes from my home to a different city.
It was the latest showing and the movie got out at about 12:30 am
On the way home, I had turned off my radio, because this movie was so emotionally powerful, and I had to be quiet, not only to take in this powerful and PAINFUL story.
These boys were not adults yet, they did not have the power of CHOICE yet. Well they had the power of their own thoughts, their own feelings and even some choices, but since they were still Children, still below the age that society has named that children are "adults."
I needed that time to grieve for a fictional character. The emotional devastation I felt, as if someone I knew had died. My nose was so runny, I was rather glad I saw it alone, so no one
Could see me sniffling and wiping me nose with my sleeve.
It has been more than twenty years since I watched this movie. I've purchased it in VHS and as time passed in DVD.
I'm not sure I'll ever watch it again...why would I ever want to chew broken glass?
...it might be painful, but as another gem of a Robin Williams movie, think about watching WHAT DREAMS WILL COME.

    this story.

Uniform alterations like forgetting to wear a belt - JUG. Hair couldn’t be too long or too short (with a weird or loud hairstyle) or else JUG until the hair was normal again. And faces had to be clean shaven or else you had to shave in the Dean of Students office. Great education though lol

Loved your insights on the sound design in the movie, and all the other aspects. I could listen to you talk about it for ages! Just subscribed to you channel. Silence of the Lambs popped into my feed (another of my favorites) and then I watched Hunt for Red October. I've enjoyed your comments and insights on those as well so am looking forward to seeing more. Oh yeah. Lover your t-shirt in this one.

Loved your reaction. I'm trying to get a hold of the films which take you to emotional places. Not because I want to see you upset but because i have a list of films which really hit me deep when I first saw them, when I knew noone else who had seen them and it's so amazing to get a connection after all these years with another human being, from someone who felt the same things as I did 20 years ago.

A film that feels in a similar vein to this but from the teacher's perspective is Mr. Holland's Opus (1995). Music teacher, covers several decades of his career and his life, really good film!

    • @oliverbrownlow5615
      @oliverbrownlow5615 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

I read *A Separate Peace* when I was 11, because it was referenced on the back of another of my favorite books, *The Chocolate War.* ASP is a great book, but unfortunately neither of its two movie versions do it justice. The newer version (2004) is much better than the original (1972), however, which looks like it was made by amateurs, and provides a virtual textbook example of how not to adapt a novel into a film.

An excellent film choice to react to Ollie. I'd like to second the nomination on Nica Marie's suggestion for "The World According to Garp". Talk about a surreal movie too! Why learn Latin?
Because since medieval times, Latin was considered by Europe to be a language of scholarship, a "perfect" language. Until the mid-20th century or so, anyone with a serious education in the humanities had to learn Latin. A lot of schools still teach it. How else would you read all those ancient manuscripts written in Latin? (You also had to learn Greek, which was considered the scholarly language back when Latin was a living language, and if you want to read REALLY ancient stuff you need to learn Aramaic.)
The answer is also found in the school's motto: one of the words is "tradition."

6:30 Reading Latin fosters certain habits of thought which cannot be achieved through English alone. All the great minds of Western Civilization read, wrote, and thought in Latin until about two hundred years ago. Not only will a study of Latin give you a strong foundation in science, medicine, or law, but through matching your mindset and worldview to theirs, allow you to understand philosophy, theology, sociology, and law, not to mention foundational classic literature. Just as you must read Marx before you can understand everything based on Communism, and Critical Theory before you can understand SJW’s, so you must learn Latin to be able to understand everyone who came before us. Since Latin has been dropped from curricula, we have become more and more divorced from our past, more and more uncomprehending of how people thought back then, until it is physically possible to be shocked, shocked! that someone living in Current Year Minus 500 doesn’t believe in something made up only six months ago.
