Very well said James! I guess being solution and action oriented no matter what situation we are in, always helps!

Excellent summary and motivation to seek a supportive place asn then follow our own path toward integrity. One could replace "academia" with just about every major element of society, e.g., sports, politics, religion, media, etc. and find both the same problems and sources of cynicism, but also a similar response: if we each find a supportive place and then contribute, we will help push in the right direction. At the mature end of my academic career, I am most proud of the mentoring I do and the atmosphere I try to create around me.

I suppose social media propagate the use of sweeping statements, however, there is a certain degree of truth in some of the aspects to doing research.

Yeah, I get that it's for clickbait... but I think there's a toxic and cynical aspect to it, too

@@James_Hayton I concur. There is an inherent inflation of, and subsequent focus, on negative sentiments on the web. I find that most opinions, whether it be positive or negative, tend to regress to the mean when discussed in person. I think it is paramount to consider and discuss the worsening of mental states in society despite and objective improvement in welfare across the board - it is evident even in Scandinavia where most needs are taken care of by the state.

Yes! The Academy is just a bunch of individuals doing research. So, if you want to change the way it's done - then start with yourself! And if that is impossible because you are surrounded by toxic individuals, maybe it's time to take your research somewhere else.

Many videos claim that academia is broken, but they are often dishonest and biased. Here’s why:
    - They highlight studies with fake data but overlook that retracted publications makeup only 0.25% of all published work.
    - They criticize the peer review system for not catching all bad research, ignoring that reviewers are unpaid and can’t be expected to reanalyze data fully.
    - They express frustration that science isn’t producing groundbreaking results as frequently as in the past, failing to recognize that expecting endless exponential progress is unrealistic. Basic progress in many fields dates back 200 years (Cauchy, Ohm, etc.).

Agreed. In any big, complicated system there will be inefficiency and fraud, but that doesn't mean the system is broken.

@@James_Hayton and I forgot the most important, thanks for your videos, James (they really help to ECR).
I saw quite some "academia is broken" essays even after I started following you (a year ago?). And these videos are scary. They create hate towards scientists aimed at the people who are not close to academia. And similar mutual hate is the reason for many other conflicts in our World when both sides fail to understand each other.
Thanks for trying to oppose such clickbait.

      1. Source?
      2. So you agree? You think that since reviewers are unpaid they can overlook bad research? Sounds cynical.
      3. Agree with that point. Systems of knowledge are falling behind, so we rely on data science and AI. Publish or perish.

Let's analyze Campbell's law: The more any quantitative social indicator is used for social decision-making, the more subject it will be to corruption pressures and the more apt it will be to distort and corrupt the social processes it is intended to monitor.[1]

So college rocks! is what you're saying. And whoever Campbell is, that mofo was prophetic. Don't believe the hype about academia, people. Of course it's not perfect, it's messy! But let's keep it real for a minute here, without 'academia', what the heck would millions upon millions of pretty much useless westerners who's only existential imperative is to avoid blue collar work at any cost and any price, almost as if their life literally does depend on it.... what would they do? Where would they go? Maybe they could start a lesbian sports bar. Or a dog walking service. Or any other number of vaguely entrepreneurial post-PhD backup plan employment schemes. Anything of course but peasant work. Never that. That's the whole reason we got the advanced degrees in the first place! So we better keep academia around warts and all. And never you mind all those academic research scandals and the ongoing replication crisis. Doesn't matter if you're not particularly bright or intellectually gifted, college isn't that difficult, and if you nose it to the grindstone in the classroom long and hard enough, you can find your little niche in old academia. Even though apparently there's like a 10 to 1 ratio of PhD holders not working in academia to ones that are. And there are some pretty shockingly vapid college professors out there. And if they can make it to the top, so can you....
