This is a great theory. I tend to think they don't have a romantic relationship simply because Nolo is only 18 years old, and Lani is presumably older. I also doubt that Tesla would have allowed Lani to become too close with Nolo. I think it's much more likely Nolo and Lani developed an older sister/little brother relationship. Lani had a difficult position as Tesla's liaison to the drivers, so she likely wanted to avoid looking like she favored the Teku over the Maniacs. Plus, there was no guaranty that Nolo would return from the realms. Also, Nolo probably welcomed an older mentor to serve the same place Tone did. On the other hand, it's curious why Nolo would hold Lani as a mentor rather than listening to Karma, who is also analytical, had known him for longer, and readily pointed out Tone's weaknesses to him. As a side note, I wonder if she felt betrayed by Nolo hiding the Cosmic Realm scheme from her.
@chinnymisc I could tell very easily that Lani obviously had a crush on Nolo, cause how she followed him and also when they were in the control room, Nolo gave her a smile after joking about Shirako and his music, in the bonus features for the Cliff Realm
I think it's not that it was a romantic connection, but rather a world race Vert and Lani situation, because Nolo is a young brash 18 year old who just took up the mantle of leader after his brother died Something Vert also had, except he was 16 and nobody had recently died So I don't think it's Lani and Nolo sittin in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G, it's Lani taking care of Nolo and making sure he's not acting as leader, but shaping to become one like Vert

They certainly had a positive relationship being built. Too bad we've never seen it cultivated more. Much like taro and karma
