  • It's planner pre-order season, and it's tempting and easy to spend a whole HUNK of money thinking your life will be better if you have the right notebook or washi tape. Let's talk about how to fight overconsumption and consumerism while also getting the planners you need. How to budget appropriately for the planner hobby. Also, let's do one my favorite frugal pasttimes: WINDOW SHOP. But planner pre-order edition.

    I am usually a very reasonable person when it comes to spending, but planners are fountain pen inks are that THING for me. Even though I don't own more than 2 planners, it's one planner too much for me. Thank you for this video, it's a very important topic, especially since I enjoy watching planning content, but sometimes it feels like it's making me buy more unnecessary stuff. I wish to find that optimal state when I can enjoy something just from watching other people having it and not attempting to buy it myself.

    Yes about 4 years ago I remember being quite happy with a simple day designer planner from target around $19. Simpler times indeed. After watching hundreds of hobo nichi videos I decided to get a take a note planner from amazon for $40. Btw, Catherine mentioned that she will have another release in mid-november so I am anxious to see if there will be the same enthusiasm from the group that Did not take advantage of the pre-order

    Honestly you saying to "push your creativity" and use what I have in new ways has made me actually EXCITED to use what I have rather than buying something "perfectly made."

    The dollar store planners and basic paper in general ´handle ´ fountain and dip pens just fine. It’s the tombows, sharpies, paint pens, stablo highlighters that bleed through. Also several of the Dollar Tree brands are made in the USA. Tomoe river paper is very thin, so high page counts are still slim and light.

    Ok so first of all YES. You defined the concepts that I have been trying to put into words. Holy cow! I’m only 20 min in but had to stop and say this. Trying to stop buying so much shit and trying to figure out why I’m ok with spending $$$$$$$$$$$$ I do not have on these things. K back to watching

      And you know, I bought her planner immediately last year because it was perfect, and I have used the efff out of it, like it is torn UP lol. And this launch was awesome from an option perspective, it is up to US to not overindulge. I bought 1 blue mist b6 full year for 2024. That is it lol...like that's all you have to do, is to put one in your cart and check out! Planning has been my thing since 2003, and it almost stopped being a thing in 2023, 20 frikkin years later when I decided to try every size rings planners, bullet journaling, etc etc. I had all that stuff you said with the diminishing returns when you saturate yourself...SPOT ON. I have a diagnosis now!! Hahahaha. Moving forward, I'm definitely going to keep that in mind, I strive to be less wasteful ya know. Also side note: there used to be this bunny brand, like it was a drawn bunny with like a pink background with one ear down and he'd have this quote bubble next to him. I think it was a stationary brand..For the life of me, I cannot remember what that brand is or where to find it, but I had a planner from that brand!! If anyone reading this knows anything, tell meeee I'm still searching. Loll anyways, such an awesome video!! :)

    "Hedonic Adaptation" - I'm so glad I learned this term. This applies to so many facets of life. I suppose I'm lucky that no pre-printed planner layout fully works for me, so I can't use all these planners. I'm not immune to this crap though. Covers and other accessories are my weakness. 😑

    I think it’s true. If you buy the item full price, it’s actually cheaper in the end as long as you’re buying that item and just that item in the store on sale because you’re not paying shipping costs… just the cost of the 1 item
    But if you’re buying that same item online and let’s say the item is knocked down to $50 but you need 150 to meet free shipping. Sometimes items are knocked down very low and even if the shipping is like free shipping at $50 or free shipping at $35. If the item is knocked down lower than that then you end up spending more money and buying more stuff that you don’t need just to get the free shipping , sometimes it’s worth it to just pay the shipping out of your pocket when an item is on sale, but in the moment it doesn’t seem like it

    I am a Capitalist and find it nothing other than wonderful that people who are passionate about a hobby manage to make a business out of their ideas! I get very annoyed with companies that have a trendy fan base that makes it impossible to obtain a planner unless you are logged onto your computer at midnight, and willing to pay for international shipping (yes, Hobonichi, I am talking about you.) If I can't order what I want, when I want, I will find another vendor or make my own. Seriously, I think some people in the Planner Community are the same weirdos that went crazy over Beanie Babies 30 years ago.

    • @anomalily
      @anomalily  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eee yes I think it is so cool that people manage to make a business out of their hobbies! And planners specifically have opened up entrepreneurship to so many parents and people with disabilities who otherwise do not have many flexible employment options. But I hear you on the not wanting to have to order things on the terms of companies!

    Mambi, Hobonichi, Erin Condren and now Sterling Ink has those enormous launches when everybody in the planner community goes crazy. SI is just now widening the repertuar because she knows people's demands with planner layouts. Spending. I think some people has lost their minds with buying all the stuff. They should live to 200 yo to get everything used. But we are talking pretty low cost things in planner community. Men buy guitars, motor cycles, boats, cars etc :D When I hear women talking about buying "too much" planner stuff, I wonder if men even give any thoughts for the costs of their hobbies 🤔🤭

    • @alexialira3839
      @alexialira3839 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Imo I think most men do considering most do not buy those things as much (or at all) as the stereotype suggests...or at least not as much as I've seen planner people buy planners. I saw a commenter saying she bought a planner for every part of her life and another bought one stalogy or moleskine (I forgot) for every month!
      At least with a car, boat, guitar etc you can resell it at any given time and depending on the brand/year and condition sometimes you can sell it for more than what you initially paid for.
      Planners, on the other hand, literally have an expiration date and most people don't want to redate it nor use a used one (unlike a vehicle or guitar.) Then a huge chunk want to go to the next shiny new "it" planner being plastered on social media that year...not the old one you're trying to sell.
      THEN, if you like it, let's say you buy one every year for the rest of your life. Some of the planners are insanely expensive so how much will you be spending in your life for one? Heck I've seen sticker packs and washis that are very expensive. It all adds up.
      I've seen some people saying they stopped buying too much of a certain thing, but they just replaced that addiction with some other item.
      But anyway I agree that some planner people lost their minds lol

    Lily!!! I found your channel when I dove into the TH-cam planner rabbit hole 2 years ago, but I’ve stopped watching planner videos and don’t see them in my feed, which is why I had NO idea about the current Sterling Ink situation, so thanks for the scoop. I keep watching your channel because, c’mon, Hedonic Adaptation?! I’m here for the interesting and useful knowledge, friend! You always offer practical, thoughtful personal finance advice and encouragement. But guess what fills my TH-cam feed now instead of planner stuff? K-drama and Chinese drama content! 😂 I’m trying to learn more about Korean society and culture via TH-cam content (vlogs) and reading (Flawless: Lessons in Looks and Culture from the K-beauty Capital, by Elise Hu, and Flowers of Fire: the Inside Story of South Korea’s Feminist Movement, by Hawon Jung). I’ve been watching Chinese dramas on TH-cam for past 2 years, and since I grew up in Taiwan, I have a lot of opinions about those. I watch mostly rom-coms and really liked Business Proposal. The goofy miscommunication tropes and disguises remind me of Shakespeare comedies, and the Korean melodramas remind me of Shksp tragedies. Ok, back to planners, I use Stalogy to make bullet journal that combines personal and work schedule/planning, and after using B6 Stalogy this past school year, I’ve switched to A5 Stalogy for this year, using Hobonichi covers. For travel, I carry a passport size Travelers Notebook. Now I’ll go watch your 5 year journal livestream! I’m in the 5th year of my 1st ever 5 year journal and absolutely LOVE it. Happy belated birthday!!!

    I’d guess she’s using an OEM so as long as she knows the order sizes early enough that gives them enough lead time to produce. It seems like she did enough business last year that the manufacturer is willing to create prototypes and agree to a manufacturing deadline without the promise of a minimum order per SKU. I’m guessing that the cover color and finishing might be less important to them than the assumption she’ll sell a certain amount of paper and binding, but I’m not fully versed on this process. I find it interesting that her approach is to manage this business by limiting overproduction, bc demand prediction is difficult- and her fans are quite forgiving and willing (maybe eager?) to follow fairly complicated buying instructions. Each year that she does this she’s going to learn more and get better, it’s really interesting to watch

    • @anomalily
      @anomalily  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope this works out great for the Common Planner! I wish her nothing but the best, she's solved a lot of problems amongst a passionate community. I suspect she's using a separate binder and printer, in which case she only has 5 different minimum orders to meet for printing. The variations come down to binding types and colors + edges I've done two different overseas print runs in the tens of thousands of dollars of products, and 1 US-based print run of similar size. hitting a 1K or 2K minimum orders with 180 different product variations sounds tough. But a reaching that if it's just the 5 different print sizes/insides, and then binding has lower minimums, I think it'll be okay. She's obviously very smart and focused and has figured this all out - I wish her nothing but the best. I'll likely be buying one (but just one!)

    I think this year all the "pre-orders" for different planners has been a business model many are following. I am not sure if it's because after the pandemic, suppliers are still trying to catch up, or if it's purely a marketing side. Take a note, Wonderland, The common planner, Midori Hibino, and so many others are doing pre-orders. So who knows. I will be using two planners because I always do, and both are on hold because of pre-orders. I just think businesses are doing it because September has become the "planner season" and I feel like creators have to come ready with their planners even when they have not been produced. This is why "pre orders" have become a thing. Planner season has become real for a few years now, even if this means that you will get your planners until October- December.

    I know this video is 4 months old now, just wanted to chime in that the name "Job" in Job's Journal is pronounced with a long "o," like in "lobe." Like the Book of Job in the Bible.
