Yeah man, medieval faires just mean we are in our full kit all day. There are a few medieval fairs that have tournaments where I live and I stay in my kit the whole day because we do demos and speak with the spectators inbetween fights.

From your experience would it be beneficial long term to make the straps, rub pads, and ties from something more modern and substantial like kevlar. Also, based on you armour design. What are the down sides. Most vulnerable parts that hurt the most. i really like this armour, but im curious to its limitations from someone thats field tested it
Thank you. Well, you certainly could use more modern and durable ties and straps like you mentioned. Many people use paracord. Were lucky in the US where the authenticity is a little more relaxed than BOTN for example. So while you could do that for a majority of local events, you will always run the risk of a marshal inspecting your gear and saying "hey this is not an allowed material." And fail your equipment check. The official rules do state you could not use modern materials, like Kevlar. Worst place to get hit in this is the sides where the plates come together when strapped. They do overlap when the front and back are fastened together but it is a sensitive spot. I like how this covers my hips and butt. I can be bent over and have more protection than a European brig. Keep in mind though that this is also optimized by having much larger plates than it is supposed to. I had the rivets set to look historical from the outside but it technically isn't supposed to be this way. Bigger plates, feels better getting hit, absorbs more force. Also the design is loosely based on a kit from a cave discovery and is not totally authentic. Good enough for here, would not pass the inspection for BOTN etc overseas.

Thank you :) Well i would say the best way when a helmet is being made for you, is to talk to the blacksmith directly. They'll obviously instruct how and where to measure, but then you can ask them any concerns. You can also let them know if you're planning to wear any extra padding. Usually they are going to want your exact measurements to your head, then they will add to those measurements themselves to accommodate padding etc. If buying a pre made helmet, check out a reputable supplier's website how to measure your head. It actually should come up in a Google search. Then you can compare those to the inside dimensions listed on the product. Make sure to determine if the helmet has padding or not then of course you can always ask them if you have any concerns. There is a guy, Paul The Barbarian Friedel who literally just uploaded a good video talking about getting fitted for armor. The reason to not add your own guesses for extra measurements is explained. You should probably find him on YT searching by that name.

@@RealSkutti ah ok ;) so ill stick to duels right now because melee is a whole other story. First though don't just buy something first. You'd want to hook up with your local team and make sure to get some guidance from them or others who have been doing this so that you dont buy the wrong stuff. There is a lot which looks ok to use but is no good for this sport. Padded gambeson under the armor. Lots of chain is too heavy and will make you use much more energy. Head and hand protection is the most important and expensive. Also, the style will depend on the period and region of armor you're recreating. For duels if you're totally serious about them, looking into titanium for everything except the helmet and hands would be expensive but the best for movement. Also for movement, you'll have either plate or splinted arms and legs depending on armor style and would maybe consider if you want everything fixed and riveted together which articulates with your movement or the kinds that is all separate parts and ties onto your padded soft layer. I prefer articulated because there are less arming points which can come off during fights. Movement in any style really though is pretty easy, just try to learn basic footwork for when you're up close. You can basically just walk around when you are not engaged. I use grettir gauntlets, they can take polearm hits better than a lot of others which I have seen crushed in after a solid hit.

Some blacksmiths do however provide packages which include everything together, in which case you'd take your measurements from your skin.

I kept forgetting lol, never around a scale. I am pretty sure when I weighed myself a while back, with it all, including sword and shield was about 110 lbs
In my dueling kit I have a hard plastic plate on my left upper ribs. I typically stand left foot forward and that's where I often get hit on that side. The plastic comes up a little bit higher than the arm opening in my brig. If you wanted to add something "there" you definitely could. And I don't think it will hinder mobility. If you pick your arm up all the way, that gap is going to open up naturally. To cover an armpit specifically isn't possible unless you get one of those really expensive full plate kits that expand and contract to cover those openings (like the ones that also enclosed the entire arm). In general, I think adding some under the armor protection on your ribs up to the armpit would be fine. You also want to make sure it's not too high that it presses into any of those arteries under your arm etc, either while wearing it or if you took a fall and it doesn't jam into your body and cause an injury
Two things then, if you want to pass authenticity, you'll be limited to very specific suits of armor. And they are pretty elaborate plate armors which may be expensive. Secondly, I wouldn't be 100% certain that without vigilant maintenance to keep it functioning perfectly, things could get jammed up. As well as the if anything got dented or malformed from taking a hard hit, that the arms wouldn't collapse back on each other. Causing it to become locked or stuck in place. I haven't seen one in use, in person, but I could see those two issues being real.

the re ality is that there is no cheating in this type of sport making your armor with extra body protection is just good sence

I've been I'm armor over 12 hours at events 😆 I can totally relate to that. Even the ones where we have fights at the faires.
