And personally, I'm tired of being looked down upon because of you and your clichés about France and its people who only ask one thing: that you leave them alone! in short, you are in fact only dirty racists towards the French and France

    • @ChucklesAndChatterShorts

      I don't think that the
Spanish, Swedish etc. suffer all the time on the networks in particular, a contempt like the French and France suffer. “surrender, white flag, cowardly etc” So no need to hide behind irony or whatever. It's simply contemptuous, even racist, on the part of the Anglo-Saxons. And they shame me a lot. Let them learn the history of France instead of looking like idiots. (As for the national channels in France, they don't care at all about who speaks French or not, in which country or not!)

I’m Scottish and started travelling abroad for work in my 20s. I soon became embarrassed that I was a typical “Brit abroad” that only spoke English and made it my mission to learn a little of each language when I travelled. I worked in 44 countries and I speak a little bit of 28 languages - just enough to be polite, say hello, how are you, good morning, see you later, no problem etc. I always found that when I tried I was always met with a smile and a better willingness to help. Even in French in Paris!
I also know some of the more difficult languages like Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese) and Japanese. I’ve just retired but still keep up using what I learned as there are plenty of opportunities in the UK. Last week my DPD delivery guy was shocked when I was able to say a few words in Kurdish and to his mate in Albanian!

I'm Mexican, and Spanish has many old words that are also used in Italian. If you make an effort to use a mix of old and new words when you try to communicate with Italian people, they understand. I was in Milan in 2018, and I asked a pretty girl where to find a supermarket. She gave me her full attention, took my hand, and told me "seguimi" (follow me). We walked about four blocks, and she told me what was affordable for a tourist and gave me some tips. She was adorable and kind. Suddenly, my German girlfriend appeared, and I thanked the Milanese girl. I was really in love with how the people were. Milan might it's not just a beautiful city because of its architecture, but it is because of its very sweet, kind, and lovely people. If you can, go, fall in love, you will not regret

However, as a non romance speaker myself (dutch) "I'm sure I'll learn Italian faster than just about any other European language. I would even argue that as a Dutch speaker, I'll learn Italian faster than, for example, Danish, Hungarian, or Finnish, despite those being much closer to my own language than Italian. I learned it from my grandfather, a militant anarchist, he said "when you interact with a foreigner in his land you should always carry a loaf of bread in one hand to offer him friendship and in the other hand you should carry a stick for when he disrespects you", wise words.
