For anyone who wonders, the reason she speaks backwards is a trick discovered by her father. The Zatara family is part of an offshoot of humanity called Homo Magi. The less diluted your bloodline is, the stronger your magic and the less ritual and tools you need to perform it. To do magic, homo magi have to focus on their words in a particular way that casual use in a native language doesn't work well with so most wizards learn a dead language like Latin or Ancient Egyptian to cast their spells. Zatara figured out that he could achieve the same effect by speaking backwards without the inconvenience of having to learn a whole new language. Keep in mind that things in DC Comics get rebooted and retconned ALOT so this may have changed but that is the explanation I read back in nineteen-eighty-whatever.

Things change including how each writer thinks magic should work. What I put in the original post was the explanation I read years ago and it always stuck with me. My only problem with it is that I've seen a lot of times where Zatanna loses her voice or is gagged or something and can't use her magic, or can only used stored magic from a wand or something.
Almost all of Zatannas spells in the film were not recorded and then reversed. The voice actress read the words backwards on the script given. For example, the scene where Batman, Zatanna and Boston were in a tornado. Zatanna actually says "Dleihs su won" which translates to "shield US now" > 'US,' since there is more than one person within the space they're in. This is why it is difficult to translate the spells if you simply reverse the audio from the film, because by doing this you will be listening to what she is actually saying but from the end of the script/line to the beginning. (My explanation is complicated I know) Your perception was "Outward shielding" when actually the most accurate possible script is "shield us now". The audio you heard, which is the reversed the audio in the film is perceived as "Now us shield" (remember "now us shield" and watch and listen the reversed audio in the clip multiple times) It can sound like "Outward Shield(ing)". So what you're actually doing by reversing the audio directly from the film is getting the script but the end of the script/line to the front. Only the section in the film where Zatanna loses control in the battle with Felix Faust is where her dialogue audio is reversed (maybe because it was a really long line or spell). You can clearly hear the reverse effect in this scene but not is the scenes where she casts short line spells. By reversing audio, the audio has a kind of suction sound characteristic because recorded dialogue is sound from an exhaling voice, by reversing, you're technically making a dialogue recording with an inhale.

If the lines had actually been recorded and reversed for the movie then wouldn't the reversed lines sound more... idk... organic? Not sure how to describe it exactly but yeah, her voice sounds odd when you reverse it except for that one scene that you mentioned in the battle with Felix Faust where it sounds pretty crisp and clear.

Yeah, human voices that are recorded and played backwards have a very distinct sound that it's pretty much impossible for a human to replicate. When this video plays them backwards they actually sound like backwards recordings, a lot more than they do when played forwards. I suspected that the uploader might have been mistaken the first time the video reversed the audio.

I think it's safe to say she's the most powerful member of the JL as a whole, not just Justice League Dark, heck, she even powerful enough to stop Wonder Woman and Superman from hitting Batman and hold them as long as she can without so much effort. You don't see another hero who can do that very often. The only comparable hero to Zatanna would be Raven.

Sorry, but at last year's NYCC, Jay Oliva - director of the movie - specifically said that Camilla Luddington - who voices Zatanna - had the most difficult job of all the voice cast because she did in fact had to speak backwards fluidly for the spells. So all the spells are in fact spoken backwards during recording.

The best example would be making the Fire Elephants Explode. Sure they didn't "detonate" per say, but they did explode into confetti, even though there was no mension of confetti. It's like the opposite of the Djinn wish logic. State what you want as vaguely as possible.

Zatannas spells are the words reversed in a sentence so playing them backwards won't work. Say she says "teleport me to Gotham" it wouldn't be mahtog ot em tropelet it would be tropelet em or mahtog
a lot of times people get her spells wrong. for example, in yj she said "temleh esaeler ym rehtaf" which is "helmet release my father" . each word is reversed but the words is in the same grammatical order.

I always find it weird when the voice actreses are directed to just read a word that was written backwards, especially when the word order for a spell remains unchanged. It never sounds quite right. Occam's Razor. The simplest solution is usually the best. Having the actress record the dialogue normally and then reversing the audio in post leads to a far better translation of Zatanna's spells from page to screen. They sound more mystical, and better follows Z's actual character.
Those weren't all of her spells in the movie. There was a brief one in Swamp Thing's... swamp, where she made Constantine's fire platform disappear. There was another spell that made Wonder Woman's Lasso wrap and immobilize her. And right afterwards, there was another one to stop Superman before he blew Batman's head off. And I'm probably forgetting one or two spells as well. Feel free to fill in, folks!
I think the phrase that you are looking for is "Reveal Felix's Mansion", but don't carve that into a stone tablet. It does seem serviceable at this time, however. I hope that this helps.
They did the same thing in Young Justice, but I believe the super long gibberish spell when she fought the other villain (forgot his name) was said forwards and was reversed. But the rest were just words written backwards like in yj

I think you might be trying to find what she's saying the wrong way. Zatanna only reverses the words but not the sentence construction. For example, she wanted someone to levitate. She would say "Etativel" but if she had to be specific about it, she would say "Etativel reh" which is 'Levitate her' backwards. This is the reason why reversing the audio wouldn't work. Zatanna does not reverse her sentence construction. In order to hear levitate her in backwards, you'll have to say "Reh Etativel". You should start from the last word of your sentence up to your first. I watched some videos of her, speaking backwards ( Young Justice ). So far, it proved my point that you cannot simply listen to her backwards in order to know what she's trying to say. You'll have to know what she's saying first and reverse the letters word per word.

I think the reason it so hard to make out is they added an echo effect. It's a nice style choice, but I don't believe it was needed.

a lot of times people get her spells wrong. for example, in yj she said "temleh esaeler ym rehtaf" which is "helmet release my father" . each word is reversed but the words is in the same grammatical order.

Zatanna makes her spells in Zibrisk language a version of Enochian known as Valerian language of the Witches and sounds like she speaks backwards
It could be "Come Fortress Felix EVIL" i.e. "Evil' instead of "Reveal" since Felix practices dark magic.
I always find it weird when the voice actreses are directed to just read a word that was written backwards, especially when the word order for a spell remains unchanged. It never sounds quite right.
Occam's Razor. The simplest solution is usually the best. Having the actress record the dialogue normally and then reversing the audio in post leads to a far better translation of Zatanna's spells from page to screen. They sound more mystical, and better follows Z's actual character.

But mostly, that final spell was fucking insane. Like execute with extreme prejudice, and no mercy.

There was another spell that made Wonder Woman's Lasso wrap and immobilize her.
And right afterwards, there was another one to stop Superman before he blew Batman's head off.
And I'm probably forgetting one or two spells as well. Feel free to fill in, folks!
I think the phrase that you are looking for is "Reveal Felix's Mansion", but don't carve that into a stone tablet. It does seem serviceable at this time, however. I hope that this helps.

They did the same thing in Young Justice, but I believe the super long gibberish spell when she fought the other villain (forgot his name) was said forwards and was reversed. But the rest were just words written backwards like in yj

I think you might be trying to find what she's saying the wrong way. Zatanna only reverses the words but not the sentence construction. For example, she wanted someone to levitate. She would say "Etativel" but if she had to be specific about it, she would say "Etativel reh" which is 'Levitate her' backwards.
This is the reason why reversing the audio wouldn't work. Zatanna does not reverse her sentence construction. In order to hear levitate her in backwards, you'll have to say "Reh Etativel". You should start from the last word of your sentence up to your first. I watched some videos of her, speaking backwards ( Young Justice ). So far, it proved my point that you cannot simply listen to her backwards in order to know what she's trying to say. You'll have to know what she's saying first and reverse the letters word per word.
Anyways, this is just a guess based on how she casts her spells on Young Justice.
Most of them are right but the first one it sounds like she’s is saying “elephants vanish”.
If you listen with subtitles, just read it backwards and you get what she's saying.
