    THANK YOU! I’ve been using this lens with the R7 as a C70 B-cam for weddings and it’s been fantastic. The light weight makes it so easy to throw on a gimbal, and it even did a great job shooting a sparkler exit.

    I agree, it has a surprisingly good image and my main thing is that it’s super light and easy to cary around such a huge focal range

    I got the R7 with the kit lens not too long ago! I picked up the RF 35mm f/1.8 because I do a good amount of low light and concert photography, but the kit lens has come in clutch in more than one occasion! Especially for low-level wildlife encounters. The images are sharp and the focal range is SO good for the size. I never go out for photos without it.

    Great point about the 4k60 crop getting further reach in video. What sounds like a disadvantage sometimes can work as a big advantage depending on what you shoot.

    Thanks for the great video review. I found in my review for photos, the R7 is pretty tough on lenses because of the hi res sensor. But the 18-150 kit proved to be good enough for stock photography.

    Thanks for the video especially when you talked about the plastic lens mount. One thing I'd like to ask - what about the durability of that mount? I'm used to metal on metal mounts with my Canon glass. Also a big thanks for mentioning about the inherent noise from the lens.

    I absolutely love the 18-150 lens as well. It's excellent especially as a take it with you no matter what lens! I hadn't considered using the 4k crop option to get even more range so this was a great mention on your part. I am going to apply the same test to a RF 100-400/RF 100-500 with the RF 1.4 TC on it to see what range I can get. I like taking shots of moose, bears etc in the back-country so being able to gain some extra reach in this way could be really good.
    I am also hoping they come up with a native RF wide angle in the 8 - 11 mm range. Currently my widest is the RF 16mm or a converted EF 10-22.
    Thanks for the video. You have some really awesome content which I have been enjoyed tremendously!

    I used the EOS-M version of this lens on my M6 II before upgrading to the R7. Since I was already impressed by its performance, it was an easy decision to buy the R7 with the lens. Although I use the RF 100-500 mm as my principle "birding" lens, the 18-150 mm kit lens is my general "walk around" lens, and I have no hesitation recommending it for the reasons you mention, including OIS that synchronizes well with the R7 IBIS, minimal focus breathing, and image quality that really is better than one might expect given the wide zoom range. About once a week, I also do some sports videography, and the subject eye tracking autofocus is also very good. My only real complaint is the aperture F3.5-6.3, which is a bit dark. Mind you, that is less of an issue given the high ISO noise performance of modern sensors and de-noising software.
    As for the lack of 3rd party lenses, I'm was also annoyed, as I had to sell the Sigma 150-600 C and Tamron 100-400 Di VC that I previously used for birding. But the truth is that Canon is making an effort to support the budget market, with their F11 primes and RF 100-400 zoom, which are well reviewed by wildlife photographers. So I'm not sure that the outrage will persist, particularly as other camera manufacturers follow suit (as Nikon has now done).

Zoom lenght 18-150 (Equal to 28 - 240 in Full frame) You can carry around the world. F srart at 3.5 it's not bad for Bokeh. and very lightweight with Long Zoom Lens like this.I really love it

    I just got this kit to replace an M5 18-150 kit. With the M, I did fret over the lens not being wide enough or fast enough and ended up accumulating a pile of fast-ish small third party primes. A great kit for sure but I found swapping lenses all the time not ideal for travel use. So, the new travel kit is R7 w/ 18-150 for almost everything, iPhone to cover the extra wide stuff, and one fast prime (85 f/2 for now, but I’m thinking 35 f/1.8 would be more versatile on the crop.). Back home when I don’t care about size and weight I’m all EF mount Sigma Art glass (zooms and primes). Initial tests look fantastic.

    I gave this a video a like even though I have next to no interest in video but use my R7 and kit lens for stills. I wish there were as good coverage from the people who make videos on stills. I'm not sure I understand how you expect the viewer to see image quality on the samples you showed unless your regular viewers have really large and high quality monitors. I would suggest while you are stretching yourself to taking telephoto videos, also investigate the 18-150 ability in close ups. While it will require extension tubes (third party, Canon does not make RF tubes) for true macro, it is quite capable in the 'almost' range. Find yourself an anthill and shoot a video at the minimum focal distance (it changes as you zoom). You almost got me interested to try a super-cropped 4k60 close up but that would be out of character for me. I don't do video. If you ever want still pictures, feel free to try this kit. It works.

    Excellent video and great channel in general , I have one question if you don't mind me asking.. is this a better option than if i get the sigma 18-35mm 1.8 + canon adapter, where my main concern is the focus speed more than the image quality , and if that's the case is the image quality comparable ? thanks in Advance 😊

      Focus speed and accuracy will usually be better with a native lens. That being said, the 18-35 and 18-150 are very different lenses and have different use cases.

    Hi Josh, As one of your other commenters mentioned there is a tendency to look down on kit lenses but they do represent value for money and lens like cameras present the ultimate in diminishing returns so moving from a “good enough” lens to an L series a huge price step especially if the user is just starting out. At the end of the day good photos are made by the user not the gear, gear helps but it’s only part of the equation !!

      Any lens is the focal length that it states on the lens no matter what camera you put it on. The 18-150 is always an 18-150. The R7 has a 1.6x crop so multiply the focal of any lens you put on the R7 by 1.6 to get the full frame equivalent.

      It depends on what you are shooting. If the camera or subject is moving quickly you will see the effects of rolling shutter. Most cameras have some rolling shutter and this varies. @markwiemels ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interestingly Canon is calling it a ‘travel’ lens, and the 18-45 is a kit lens. It is pretty versatile and light, so I guess the travel moniker makes some sense. I have also found it’s pretty good for video, but 4k is only 8mp, it does fall apart a bit once you start pixel peeping the 32.5mp photos.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like some interesting marketing from Canon. When I bought my R7 it came with the 18-150 as a kit. Yes you only need around 8MP for 4K video, but in 4K fine this is taking the full sensor width and oversampling it, which is a lot more than 8MP. Thanks for sharing your experience on the photo side of things.

    Thanks for the video, Josh. On lens comparisons, I'd like to see this guy go up against some L series lenses that share, or overlap, on focal range. That way, we can know exactly what we get when we spend extra money a better lens. For example, how does it compare to the 24-105 L F4, or even the Sigma 18-35 1.8, in the ranges were they overlap. For video and stills! Again, thanks.

    • @RogerZoul
      @RogerZoul ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Josh_Sattin I understand about not having all that pricey RF glass. Use whatever you have or can borrow. About the fairness: Well, if the RF L glass costs 6x what non L cost, how does that translate into real world results? What exactly am I for 6x the price? Of course, the L glass is better, but is it 6x the price better. And in what was it is better? Sometimes it is just in the weather sealing. Buyers need to know this stuff. • @Josh_Sattin

    • @RogerZoul
      @RogerZoul ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Josh_Sattin I think comparing the sigma to the 15-35 was a great idea. Yes, we know the Canon is a lot pricier, but it gives you plenty for the extra money. You are not going to be wasting money on it unless you don’t need or care about those features and then the Sigma is a good option. Now if you know how the Sigma compares to the RF 18-150 or how the 18-150 compares to the 15-35 then you can pick between the 3, depending on needs. Some will always pick the pricey lens but some will go for the Sigma and others will go for the Canon kit lens if it is not terrible.

I reached out to my Viltrox contact and they told me that Canon wouldn’t let them sell them. A week after that I started seeing other TH-camrs making videos about it. Maybe they got permission to sell the speedboosters again but not the lenses.

      It is not. The EOS R is a full frame camera an this lens is designed for APS-C cameras.

    The RF 18-150 lens is great for outdoors. You'll want something in the f/1.8 to f/2.8 range for indoors. That's where the budget breakers are.

      @@joemike_8725 See if you can find a used 70-200mm f/4 at a good price. As long as you're not way up in the bleachers or 40 yards from your subject, you should be able to get some good shots with it.

    I fall into the category of basically being forced to buy this lens. Oddly enough I find myself grabbing it here and there for different scenarios. Also, it really is nice to have small discrete “beater” lens to carry around and not worry too much about it getting broken or stolen.

    • @Josh_Sattin

      I remember once going to monster truck event with my 100-400mm L glass and the security checked and said "lens is too small to be professional and won't reach the action. So "small" is relative and contextual. I love the RF 18-150 for its size and superb picture quality but doesn't have the reach of my EF-S 18-200 that used to be on 7DMK2 all the time.

    I have a $2000 budget for a camera and lens. Doing mostly talking head video with some “wildlife” footage. What camera do I buy? Please help! My head is about to explode with all this camera research. Hoping to stay with canon or possibly sony

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah there are a lot of options. Canon R7 with the kit lens and RF 100-400 would be solid. A little bit over your $2000 budget but you need a different lens for wildlife.

    The lens is an RF-S so I don't think there is a 1.6 apc crop.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  ปีที่แล้ว

      The 1.6x crop comes from the sensor in the camera, not the lens. You can use either a RF (full frame) or RF-S (APS-C) lens on a APS-C sensor, but if you put a RF-S lens on a full frame camera you will see hard vignetting like a porthole since the image circle isn't big enough to cover that whole full frame sensor. When you use a RF lens on an APS-C camera then you are only seeing the center part of the image produced by the lens and it works fine.

    People dump on kit lenses because they are snobs. Most of them hadn't even touched the kit lens....

  • @cjstudios5170
    @cjstudios5170 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ahh, maann...Now you are making me rethink utilizing this lens. I bought the kit, with the intention of selling the lens, because I have the RF16, RF35 & an RF85 (Yongnuo) that I use for real estate or weddings. Since I'm not shooting this weekend, Imma gonna bust it out and shoot the woodpeckers on my backyard feeder.
    BTW, if you are so inclined, head to the South end of Jordan Lake, down by the dam. There is an interesting dynamic going on between the Osprey and Eagle(s). It's rather comical to watch and film. Another great place to go is the Sylvan Heights Bird Park - a controlled shooting space with lots of birds!
    DM me so I can buy you a coffee. My studio is not too far from you.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it's worth trying out the lens, especially since you already have it. I don't think it can compete with a more specific telephoto lens for wildlife, but its fun and a lot of R7 owners got it with the kit. I've been to Sylvan, such a cool place. Jordan like is a decent drive for me. Are there any specific spots to see eagles? I have been seeing quite a few Osprey near me.

    All lenses work fine in day, in lowlight you find the good from the bad. This kitlens have very poor lowlight.

    I hope canon stop with these overpriced cameras /lenses and start producing affordable cameras and lenses , When they introduced these products that are twice the price compared to EF equivalent , I lost interest in buying any more gear , I will just stick with my EOS R and few rf and ef lenses ... Or maybe I'm just too poor to afford the new things.
