    You should consider voicing things like perhaps documentsries and/or commercials.

      @@teocrawford I reckon I am not the first to suggest this. I don't know what Fiverr is, though an old thing that has gotten a revival is audiobooks. You should contact those streamingservices. You could be the next Morgan Freeman.

    I’ve had a theme in mind for a year now but I haven’t been able to pull the trigger on it. This episode is helping me get a better understanding of how to present or portray my theme. I’m drawn the Mt. Fuji theme because that exactly how I feel about a structure that is near my home. I live in Southern California. My husband and I love to surf. We have two toddlers who love the beach and we live on the beach. There are smoke stacks/ power plant near the water and have always been a controversial environmental topic for years. It’s is an eye sore to look upon on such a beautiful long stretch of beach but whenever I see it I know I’m close to home and it brings me some comfort. Thank you for this episode! Excellent work :)

    Themes in photography awesome subject. The restrictions lead to having to work to find the subject chosen and then capture it in a way that does not become repetitive. In collaborations especially, when you have photographers from around the world, It make an unifying subject, but interpretation of it is solely up to the individuals.

    • @teocrawford
      @teocrawford  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ohhh I hadn't thought of the possibilities when following a theme as a collaboration, that's interesting!🤔🙌🏼

    I see themes as kind of « never ending projects ». I have a few themes running in the background of my photographic mind, like my hometown, by night, in the mist, and so on. But also themes inspired from other known photographers, like Todd Hido of course, Gabriele Basilico and more. It helps my mind to organise what I want to photograph on a particular day, always with inspiration / reference at hand.

    • @teocrawford

      Ahhh true, I hadn't thought of the endless nature a theme in photography can have. Great way of using themes!🙌🏼🤗

    I don't know how I can interpret it right because I am still a bit confused with "style in photography" and "theme in photography", vaguely enough I can sense that this is how I perceived the anime Naruto. They would say Naruto is about ninja war, others would say about the monsters inside of them but I think Naruto's theme is about "pain". You cannot sense it as the "theme" but that's how I see it when I look at the stories compoundly, "the idea woven in the characters and plot". I think I still think of this vaguely.

    The sign of a good video (or photograph) is when it makes you think. We don’t have to agree, and we may disagree strongly. This was a classic video, very thought provoking. Looking forward to more of these.

    That was a very helpful explanation on themes in photography! Also, the video was visually pretty appealing!
    Zooming out is probably the best approach of recognizing a theme in a body of work. However, I'd like to add, that the theme cannot only be communicated visually, but also verbally/written, when the artist explains his/her thoughts on the photographs. In some cases this might be even neccessary. I usually have a hard time understanding pictures, which should evoke emotions like grief. As an example, Brooke Shaden's work is focussed on grief, death, loss and so on. I did not truly understand her art, until I read some explanation on the respective photos.
    On the topic of restriction stimulates creativity: I agree, that an artist might end up in a loop creating repetitive pictures. I much more prefer phrasing "restrictions breeds creativity", which ultimately means for myself, that the restriction of a theme will not end up in a loop, but constantly challenging myself to new approaches, techniques and so on (though this is my personal opinion).

    • @teocrawford
      @teocrawford  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for sharing your thoughts! That's a great point you add there. The context and background of a series of photos can totally make a theme and I think it makes projects of other artists all the interesting sometimes, when reading their background🙌🏼
      To what you write about the loop: Yes! That is the best case scenario, which I wish for every artist, however I do think that the danger of looping exists🤔

    i'm new to your channel and this video on it's own as convinced me that you are worth watching and listening. The content is thoughtfully presented,.Worth mentioning; I appreciated the angle you took into exploring different perspective of what's a theme. You definitely tackled the subject with humility and that's key to progression.

    never click on video so fast ,i really like this type of video i definitely pick up some information from this video a lot,i agree theme can be helpful to let people know what your focus on photography but i feel like it can be repeat so thats why i'm not really focus on big theme on instagram only try to match 3 photos with same theme,but i do have a focus on photograph cars but thats for my side project :)

    So far, my theme could perhaps be analysed as relating to industrial archaeology or rural isolation as a young adult. A lot of industrial wastelands, scraps, and familiar faces. all fun things of course.

    Beautiful video~ very well thought out and put together! For myself, I think I'm too random to just have one theme all throughout my work 😂 I prefer to just collect and group images that work together later on, or plan a project with a self-contained theme and shoot for a period of time, rather than trying to have an overall theme. Mostly because I know my preferences will change later on haha

    Damn that was once again a great excursion into an interesting topic. I think themes are in many ways important. Maybe as something you can always come back to when you maybe don't know what else to do. Maybe as a goal to achieve when you are not as experienced. Overall i'd say that themes are integral to a photographers style and contribute in a big part to making them stand out

      Hmm I actually hadn't thought of how to choose a theme, but I believe it's something that comes naturally. Reflect your work and look for things that connect many of your photographs and maybe you'll find something close to a theme that you can then develope into a theme🙌🏼

    what would you say is the difference between a theme and a style?

    • @teocrawford
      @teocrawford  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't quote me on the following: I think a theme more often influences the content of photography and the concept, where as a style refers more to the visual realisation.
      Maybe another point could be that a theme evolves through thought and conceptualising, whereas a style evolves from practice and is an intuitive process.🤔
      Just some thoughts about the question off the top of my head - could be cooompletely wrong hahah😅🤷🏻‍♂️
