    I really loved the Jo Ral and the copper mute. The Jo Ral in particular, reminded me of those classic cartoons or like in the show Ed, Edd, and Eddy.

    That's quite a collection and some super hard to get a hold of. I really appreciate you posting this video, as I have wanted to hear several of these mutes but have never had the opportunity. Good job on the review!

    Well, from here, I thought that when you played the 'C' they all sounded horrible...but when you played through the scale I thought that the first one, that old 1925 original sounded the best. It seemed to be even through the scale and it didn't have the ugly buzz that some of the others had.

    As a beginner I found it really interesting that you played the arpeggio un-muted to show the low F# and G. The mutes totally suffocate the notes down there!

    • @JoshRzepkaMusic
      @JoshRzepkaMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Yes, they sure do. They make those low notes rather difficult to play.

    Wow! I don't know how I missed this video. I have a total of 6 harmons (with a lower case "h") including a couple of the ones here. I think my current fav is a copper Harmon, but I suspect it isn't as old as the one you've got cuz it has no stamp. It came to me looking like an old, beat-up penny, so I gave it new cork, a scratched finish, and a coat of lacquer to maintain the look. It still looks old and is the one I currently carry. I think brand new ones have a slightly different construction, and I don't have any idea when the design changed or how different it might sound from earlier versions. I do have an old Emo I bought back in the 60s. I think my teacher recommended it because of the buzz, and for a long time it was the only one I had. I also have a British Selmer Styratone, the LeBlanc, neither of which I would ever play in public, the Soulo (which is REALLY buzzy!), and a Windy City, whose buzz, for me, is really volume dependent and varies quite a bit. The copper Harmon's buzz is more consistent. It's also got a pretty easy blow, but is fairly heavy of course because of the copper. Great demo, as always!

    Do you plan on doing a cup mute video? Because that would be cool too!

      @JoshRzepkaMusic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      cymbals trumpet thanks! I never bought a Zinger. I played one of them at last year's ITG conference, but I didn't end up getting one because it wasn't the sound I was looking for. It's a very loud and very lightweight mute though, it's great if you're playing in a big band or looking for that super buzzy sound. I already have a short commute comparison video that I posted a year ago but I will be updating it sometime in the coming months.

    Out of these i like the 1930 copper harmon the best.
    You must check out the Trumcore Zinger if you haven´t tried it. Excellent mute. Very in tune and sweet in all ranges. My personal favourite.

      Thanks! I just used the 1930 copper harmon for a tune on my new CD, it sounds awesome. I brought 3 of the best ones, and that was it!
      I've played the zinger, it's great. I'll be making a followup to this video later this year with the Zinger, Soulo, Dennis Wick, and about 5 or 6 other ones not featured in this video.
      May be a few months ... but I'll be making it.

    Man the 1930 harmon in copper sounds so cool!! The Emo mute i had to return because of the black rubber piece that holds it in place... Very poor material and bad glue!

    So cool to hear all the different timbres! But is there a difference in "blowback resistance" between them? I want to find a good harmon mute with minimal resistance (The Dennis Wick harmon I use has too much for me).

    • @JoshRzepkaMusic
      @JoshRzepkaMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joseph Mejia some of them are more open, not too many have a lot of resistance. The Shew Soloist has the most resistance. The 1925 harmon is the most open. The Emo is not too bad. Copper ones all felt like more resistance. Ullven is also more resistance. You may want to try the Zinger, it's very open and a big buzz. Not my style, but it's very popular.

    I play a simple Bach 37 lightweight, with a Bach 5s mouthpiece.. I have the joral copper bubble, but it’s too dark and hard to play..and I get bored with it.. right now I don’t like the sound of bubbles anymore indeed.. I would like to have Davis sound.... would you suggest the Harmon B, or the Emo?

    • @JoshRzepkaMusic

    • @JoshRzepkaMusic
      @JoshRzepkaMusic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      M , I don't have an aluminum bubble, but I imagine it plays similarly to the copper one - perhaps not as much buzz/core due to the weight. Either way, I'd recommend it over the modern standard Harmon. The Jo Ral is more even top to bottom and is fuller.

      @CapitanTavish 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I understand, can you suggest me the closest harmon sound you can buy closest to the 30's since I've been searching for vintages but never showed up, and if they do the are over 100$ here in Italy

    • @JoshRzepkaMusic
      @JoshRzepkaMusic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately none of the ones I tested really sound or play just like the original, if I find one that has that same sound I'll let you know! Best bet is to look and find one on Ebay, or perhaps an estate sale? Sometimes people list them without full details and you can get a good deal.
