- Sophia Loren, an icon of international cinema, who stars this year in "The Life Ahead" on Netflix, sat down with New York-based Producer Federica Belletti, a participant on the BAFTA Newcomers Program, for a conversation over Zoom as part of our 🫖Tea with BAFTA☕️ series.
This series pairs longlisted performers for the #EEBAFTAs with participants of our international talent development programs, for a brief chat over a cup of tea.
Sophia and Federica discussed her work on The Life Ahead, working in America, and the role of self-belief in building a career.

Sophia Loren is an Icon...so wise and beauty...I love her and full of my respect.
Ms Loren has always been such an inspiration to me. Her grace, her class, everything. I mentioned her to a young woman once, and the poor girl had no idea who I was speaking of. Absolutely a very unique woman and I can't think of a better role model.

The comment for Sophia about relaxing, trust and becoming aware the interviewer has no intent of hurting her in some way was extremely telling. Her arms length from journalists is understandable particularly if you go back to the beginning and see how poorly in many cases she has been treated over the decades. She is a cultural treasure to the world we are lucky she still will give us these small moments.
I wish, for a few minutes, I could see and talk with Sophia. She's real. Beauty from the heart and soul...In my opinion, one of the greatest Actresses ever!

Oh god what boring questions at the start. It’s such a coup to interview her please don’t ask such unimaginative questions to such an icon 🙏🏻
The interviewer did a fine job of adapting quickly to Sophia's seeming form of dementia. At times she sounded quite confused & the interviewer did everything possible to rescue her & avoid burdening her with difficult questions related to a past she might not have been able to recall. For example she started to ramble on her many travels & that she has been in Switzerland "for a long time - 5 or 6 months" - even though she permanently lives there. She also mentioned that she planned to go to Italy after not being there for a long time & see her entire family - "including her sister's husband". Unless she was astute enough to plug her latest movie as the best she has ever made, it could also have been b/c it was still fresh in her memory.
