Looking Inside a Samsung Refrigerator Compressor Relay

  • In this video I cut open a Samsung Refrigerator Compressor Relay. I wanted to see if it's something that can be repaired. In this case it does not look like it's a repairable problem.
The only way to fix this is to either replace the relay on the board or replace the control board completely.
This refrigerator had a compressor that would not run. The refrigerator was not getting cold due to the relay being defective. You could have gotten the compressor running temporarily by forcing the two contacts together.
The only problem with doing that is, the compressor would run 100 percent of the time and the temps inside the refrigerator would then get too cold.
If you have any questions or comments, please leave them in the comment section of this video.

You had the right idea! I loved watching you hack that relay with the Dremel tool. I knew there was a risk to cut through the coil, but who cares! it's faulty anyway... You satisfied your troubleshooting analysis by performing its autopsy and that's honorable as can be.

My fridge has not been working. I had it unplugged for a day. I went to plug it in and started working again.............for about an hour. Iit cooled down, but then later it would not kick back on to cool again. I UNplugged it again, and later in the day I plugged it back in, and again it started to cool, but after a while it did not want to continue to cool. What do you think would be cause it not to continue cycling the cooling process. only starts to cool when I UNPLUG and REPLUG the fridge.

Nice video, for me it would be also were easy to replace the relay ;) And sometimes you can open the relay by lifting the complete top of it is attached with two clips, the clips are on the bottom plate of the relay but anyway repairing this particular relay is it not worth a replacement is much easier. Most likely the contacts are burnt out because the relay switches a inductive load, that create a voltage spike every time when the relay switches off, and that voltage spike creates a small electric arc between the contacts, and that arc burns out the contacts. My guess the circuit don't have a arc suppression system to save costs.
    And thumbs up :D

Your comment is great. Samsung has left their their customers out to dry with charging $2k for a fridge that self destructs in 8 or 9 years..

Hi Bill Thanks for the great videos I have the samsung twin cool and took the top off of the compressor relay I have the unit running with the contact closed how long can I run the unit until the new board gets here which will be about 3 days. I don't want to burn up the compressor, I have a 12" fan blowing on the compressor all the time.
thanks in advance for your answer

+dmoney1dm8512 I could check the freezer thermistor connection. Could be causing a bad reading. I would go there first then move on from there.

Do not loose the numbers that is on top of that relay, because I do not have the schematic on that board.
Figure mailing and $4.00 for the relay. Labor Free.

I can refurbish as long as it is NOT a IC Chip.
common parts are available but not special
      manufacture chips or Eproms
