If I were in your situation I would buy something cheap and reliable that will last me another nine months to a full year while I wait for the car market to return back to normal. This isn’t a permanent setting with the market. The chip shortage has really put a damper on things. If you buy a car for $5000 right now and it’s worth $3000 next year, that’s a lot better than buying a car that’s worth $16,000 for $22,000. Make sure that if you’re buying from a private party, that you get a mechanic to do a prepurchase inspection, which will cost you $50 but potentially save you thousands.
