Fork Seal Install WITHOUT a Seal Driver [Dirt Bike]

  • I'm going to show you how to install fork seals WITHOUT a seal driver when doing a rebuild.
    It is always nice to have all the proper tools at your disposal, but there are usually ways around purchasing these tools that can run at a premium price tag. This way you can spend that money on more sweet sweet 2t oil or gas or parts or gear or even beer!
    Of course you will still need the proper tools to disassemble your forks, like the Tusk fork cap wrench you will see in this video, and a seal bullet. Although a plastic bag can always be used in place of a bullet if need be!

    Welcome back to Ride.Enduro, in this video I'm going to show you how to seat your fork seals without a seal driver.
    First go ahead and assemble all the components. I use a seal bullet to prevent the
    seals from getting all torn to hell, slide them over the upper portion of your lower stanchion. Put the dust seal on first and then make sure you orientate your oil seal so that the cavity is facing upwards into your fork. Slip the ring on and then slip your lower and upper bushings on as well. Most all of your standard dirt bike forks are going to be pretty similar, these forks are off my 2014 yz250, they are KYB SSS forks, I love these things as they work really well.
    Now that everything's assembled you should make sure it is really clean before you go ahead and do this last step. Now you can insert your lower stanchion into your upper fork tube and then you're gonna use the lower stanchion, kind of like a slide hammer, to seat the oil seal down enough to get the circlip into the recessed groove that is in the upper fork tube.
    All I'm gonna use for this step is a roll of electrical tape! I've been doing this for all my fork seal changes now and it's working really well. The first thing you want to do is make sure that the stanchion is super clean as you don't want any oil left on them so that the tape can actually stick. Now line up your oil seal so that it's nice and square to the tube, and use that to guide your first row of tape around the stanchion, so it's nice and square and not zigzagging all over all over the place. This is so when use it to hit the seal it will be seating all the way around against that seal. Now you're gonna wrap the tape around the stanchion and build it up to about an eighth inch thick, this is so it seats totally against the front edge of the seal.
    Once there is a nice thick layer of tape on the stanchion and it mates up with the seal nicely, set the seal right up against the tape and hammer it down. You do not have to hit it very hard, use nice and light strokes until it is punched completely into the upper fork tube.
    Once that is done you should be able to see the groove in which the circle seats into. Then go ahead and install the clip into the grove starting at one of the open ends, I push in the end of the clip and then work my way around with a small flat-head screwdriver and push it down into the groove. Be careful not to knick the seal here because you can destroy your seal.
    Now go ahead and peel the tape off. Once you have all that tape off go ahead and give the stanchion a wipe down to get all the tape residue off, and then slide the dust seal into place. Usually you can seat this seal with your fingers!

    I like the improvisation but you gotta be careful.the driver tool hits the seal at an outer circumference not to cause damage. I.didn't try that trick but I would add more tape if I ever did to avoid hitting the seal inner part which can easily mess the whole thing. Thanks for the video.

    • @RideEnduro
      @RideEnduro  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bushing falls into place quite nicely on these forks, so essentially I was only seating the oil seal. If your lower bushing needs some force to set in place I would press that in first and then do the oil seal separately. 👍🏻

    • @RideEnduro
      @RideEnduro  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean the video footage kinda disagrees... but to each their own. Sorry it didn’t work out for you. I’d be kinda worried about the seal you are using if it comes out that easily. I have to pry mine out, or slide the lower stanchion into it the reverse direction with some force to pop it out.
