    In Australia as a kid, we had the "Street lights' rule. If the street lights came on, you had to go home, no matter the time of year (unless you were at sports or other extracurricular activities). Bit annoying in winter when they came on at 4:30, but loved it in summer when they don't come on until 8:30.

    I'm Canadian and could relate to some of these I had a 9pm curfew until I was 18, we take our shoes off at the door and my mom always talked about how much snow they had to walk in up hill! Both ways to school 🤣

    • @pascallaflamme3688
      @pascallaflamme3688 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely like if they had no bus or anything to get there! Also I don't know if it's a thing or more like on the canadian french side. But in our home we mostly always had a recreation room designed to play or a second living room. Outside there just so much to do it's hardly a punishment, like playing in the snow, cycling, playing hockey or playing in the pool. But in our bedroom except for a bed and a desk it's pretty empty. So being grounded is mostly about being locked in your room.

    Okay first of all we love to see the Bromance at 2:57 and the size joke was funny. Second honestly all of this was relatable to me as well, shoes have never been allowed in the house because you don't want to bring in trash from outside or ruin the floors. I'm a 19 year old black girl yes from the US but getting hit with slides or anything found close isn't uncommon. I have 3 older brothers and when they wish to go out they may at any given notice, I however am watched like a convicted felon and investigated about where I'm going, who will be there, what is there family background? Also relationships are unequivocally out of the question. Love the reaction. 💜

    My parents were very relaxed with me, I think it's because I was the last in a long line of kids. So I am a very laid back parent too. My kid can study what she wants, because I don't have to like it she does. And if she doesn't enjoy it she won't put in all her effort or appreciate it. Also grounding kids isn't really a punishment anymore they have so much that they do at home, it's better to tell them if they don't behave they have to go out 🤣

    About the grounding in America: Yes, if you don't go out much, then grounding to stay inside doesn't really affect you, but parents may also ground you from your phone, computer, gaming system-- or, if you are old enough to drive, from using the car for anything other than going to school. You can be grounded from anything you use for entertainment, really. It's not just used for not going out.
    Part of the reason parents don't send us out is because it might not be safe. Korea is a much safer country-- Actually, many Western countries are much safer countries than America (although it does depend where you are in America) for unattended children. Since sending children out of the house as punishment is not part of the culture, you also run the risk of attracting unwanted attention from others who think you are negligent. Here, we only kick adult children out of the house, and it's usually permanent. Basically, to kick your child out of the house, even temporarily = abandonment to most people.
    Side note: My father also tried the "I walked to school uphill both ways in the snow" with me, but... We live in Texas-- where it is very flat and everything shuts down if there is even a hint of snow. Nice try, Dad.

    Actually most of my schools when I was living in various African countries were very close to our house. It wasn't until I came to the US they I realized scold could be really far. In college I has to walk from our Long Island house to Queens, then take a bus to the train station, then switch the train 3 times until I got off in Harlem. I think it was during my parents'times that school was fast. But even then my grandfather built a school right across the road from his compound. My mom and all 17 of her siblings started school there. And if you go to most African countries you'll find that shoes don't even enter the house. You leave them near the door. A lot of homes are actually compounds with souther one or several homes so you can have several generations living in their own "chambers". And the "sieste" culture doesn't just happen in Spain. It happens in quite a few Francophone countries as well.

    • @veekahbapey
      @veekahbapey 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Me too, I was like nope there are schools in every district here sometimes even more than 2 schools plus its far there are taxis and buses not to mention parents pay for school transportation for designated school etc. and they pick and drop the kids to and from school at their homes. I guess those starving ads are still prevalent and detecting how the rest of the world views, I mean I'm not brushing aside the clear and obvious poverty but most of Africa is quite developed. About the shoe stuff in Zimbabwe where its quite common and expected to leave them outside the house but now that I'm living in South Africa the culture here we just enter with our shoes.

    In the US many driving teens live in rural areas where they might live 20-30 miles from their school friends. On the weekends it’s typical to drive to a friends house and possibly spend the night if it’s too late to drive all the way home. I grew up outside a city of about 150,000. My friends lived across town, sometimes it would take an hour to drive to their homes, pick everyone up go the movies then another hour or two to drop everyone back off and then drive home. People in other countries and people in our own country do not realize how distance effects us in the USA. So being grounded is a big deal here, it means not seeing friends over the weekend, so no socializing. This culture really became a big deal before internet because the only way to talk to friends was to meet outside of school. My 19 year old son’s friends are scattered all over our county, we live in the largest county east of the Mississippi River, so it takes tons of planning and driving just to meet up with friends, yes being grounded where you are forced to stay at home is a big deal for American teens.

    The East vs West punishment thing boggles my mind.
    Grounding here in the USA usually means having all of your entertainment taken away as well. So, no phone, computer, or games. If you've really done something offensive, the parents usually do a massive removal of every kind of pleasurable thing from your room and keep you there like a prison cell. There is literally nothing to do but to "think about what you've done" (parents always say this) and to do schoolwork. Is this really not something parents do in Korea?
    I'm still surprised. Could someone explain what being punished by staying outside is supposed to do? There are shops, friends, basketball courts, movie theaters etc. to go see outside the house. How is that a punishment?

      i'm not sure about korea but in my culture kids are still overall pretty dependent on their families so being kicked out of the house isn't seen as a good thing. even if you could go out and do fun stuff there's still the feeling of "where do i go back to" or "when should i go back". i don't think anyone would enjoy their parents screaming at them to get out of the house though, i imagine it's not a good feeling.

    • @rmap08
      @rmap08 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      In my culture it was more of a "if you don't want to follow the rules, stay out of the house until you realize you did wrong/until you calm down and stop throwing tantrums". Most of the time this kind of sentence were told at night so better calm down because who would want to stay outside in the dark and the cold? (Of course you never go out, it was more like a warning)

    The "Go out"-picture is so my mother when I turned into a recluse as I entered my adolescence in the early to mid 90's.
    For reference I'm fully Dutch.

    In eastern europe we have pretty much all the same things lmao. I never understood the grounded thing, I'd get sent out and have any screen privileges revoked for 2/3 weeks.
    And the sleepovers it was more like "i dont want some randos kids sleeping here, but if i let you sleep at their house they're gonna expect to come here, so ur not going anywhere"

    I’m from Panama, Central America and I see the difference btw the parties. In here the gatherings btw teenagers/young adults are called “Parkings” and they’re usually on weekends, the thing is that if u say that it starts at 8 NO ONE is gonna be there at that time, we literally arrive +1-2h later, and by that time I was 17 (I’m now 20) my curfew was around 2-3am(also that I got so sleepy🥴), but people were there till morning sleeping anywhere they could😂 and usually we know everyone, but at the end people begin inviting their own friends, brothers, cousins so yeah😂

    I just want to clear up this misunderstanding. There are plenty of American households that take shoes off at the door. My family is one of them and we are black. Wore my shoes in the house to the living room once and was immediately scolded.

    0:54 this is annoying when you live in a building apartment and share a small hallway with the people from the first floor and they leave their shoes in front of your door making it hard to open your door.

    Seungwoo being the new beast? Or do we have two beasts now? :D
    Also, did they just used a She-Ra clip for 'being grounded'? Didn't expect that at all.
