I think these brands have not been performing well in recent years, this is why they had to merge or get taken over. The luxury industry looks like it is hihgly profitable, this is only true though for the top performers in the industry. That does not necessarily mean you have to be big, look at Moncler for example, compared to LVMH they are small, but highly desired and therefore profitable.

Besides, a monopoly isn't considered a monopoly until a company starts using their influence shut out the competition and then raise prices. As much as I don't care for LVMH, they aren't close to a monopoly.
