    When a friend of mine told me her kid was going to have to use Zoom for school, I immediately emailed the principal asking if he realized Zoom is on about every cyber security website's top five list of free programs you should never install on your computer. I suggested Discord, since most of the students probably have it anyway, it's admin invite-only, and it can do everything Zoom can and more. His response was pretty much, "My hands are tied." So when I saw all of the Zoom trolling happening, I can't say it didn't give me a hell of a chuckle.

      Zoom was “easy” (because it’s so insecure). If you have to suddenly teach a bunch of boomers how to computer, you go with the easiest thing. Then it became super popular and everyone decided it must be the best because it was so popular

      @@jessea4438 principals don't get to make such decisions even if he wanted to use discord he doesn't get the choice that is up to the school board in that district as well as the superintendent his hands were tied

    Even though the food was just going to waste.... it couldn't be donated unless sombody paid the cost of transporting the food....behind taxing is probably the biggest cost

    • @burningsinner1132
      @burningsinner1132 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes, it couldn't. But expenses is just a smaller picture behind the large problem.
      A lot of food was delivered in africa to feed the starving people. As a result, local african farmers went out of bussiness, making whole africa completely dependent on constant influx of donated food. Which is exarcerbated by the birthrate spike which always happen in less developed countries once food stops being scarce.
      So people donate even more food, causing even more problems and cycle continues. But that's just half the story. Being less developed, african countries rely heavily on wood and coal for their electricity and heat generation. With evergrowing population, this leads to extensive coal mining ops and even more extensive deforestation, which in turn causes deserts to grow.
      In "civilized" countries, you get the same problem. If being poor jobless shmuck pays enough to live comfortably, people stop working. In our world, states usually have a number of support programms that won't allow you to die, but will make your life one hell of inconvenience. Some would say that it's because there is some anti-human plot with some bankers and stuff, but reality is way more boring and disappointing - government uses inconvenience of living without job to force you to get the job, making you sustainable and generating taxes instead of just eating them.
      The problem with uncontrolled donations, however, is that the lives of these people become better. In fact, so much better that big inconvenience turns into minor annoyance, which in turn results in them no longer seeking any jobs. Not being forced to do any, however, they quickly lose a lot of need to socialize and show some tolerance towards other people (It's not like they gonna lose their job for breaking code of conduit!), resulting in massive crowd that has near zero respect towards other people. And this in turn transfers into zero respects to their needs, resulting in a lot of these jobless people earning extras (To remove the rest of annoyances they have with extra cash on the side) in the easiest way possible. Which usually is NOT law-abiding one. Usually these are also ineffective, causing massive economical damage to make some spare change. Like stealing electrical wires to sell these in bulk for recycling. Or stealing the palisades, signs, transformators, unattended transport and so on.
      I used to work at a lab. We worked on making new flavours for the candies. To do so, we used very expensive gas analyzing machinery.
      At one day, we had a break-in. Some idiots made their way in, cut a lot of wires, stole some reagents and trashed basically everything. The culprit turned out to be some junkies who died trying to "sample" some reagents. Insurance company managed to bail out and the company died, being unable to recoup the losses. In fact, some of us had several years worth of lawsuits for not taking enough measures to keep reagents safe, despite following instructions to the letter.
      But they weren't some sort of homeless tragic people. These were the people who were hard drinking and drugging delinquents way back to their school age, sustained in their lifestyle by generous donations, free meals at local church and soup kitchen, all on top of shoplifting in local supermarkets (The law in my country forbids to "bundle" shoplifting cases, prohibits blacklisting and shoplifting just under $25 does not result in any legal action) with intent to sell that stuff later to afford drugs.

    The best part about the toilet paper thing is that there are portable bidets that are like 10 bucks and will do the job, if you were ever running out of toilet paper.

    I was in my small hometown when this all started. Population 1,000. There's like a bubble over my hometown that separates us from the rest of the world. Nothing in the outside world ever affects us. But even we ran out of toilet paper. I had to use paper towels and throw them out in the trash bin outside.

    Nothing will change unless it is to increase profits. If it has a positive effect for everyone else (employees and customers) then thats a bonus, but if its all negative and worsens things, then management will make small changes until the negativity is manageable and everyone gets used to the shittier service/quality. Why do you think SouthWest Airlines had been using software from the 90’s for their booking?

    The food couldn´t have been donated because it still would be needed to be harvested and you need workers for that wich costs even more money.
    Just shower thoughts: Money is the real pandemic.

    • @CruelestChris
      @CruelestChris 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Money is just a method of representing relative value of commodities, logistics would not be free just because you represent the value in a different way.

    The reason why they wont donate the food to people who need it is because of money. Greed will be the downfall of our species.

    • @CruelestChris
      @CruelestChris 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it's not. It's because you can't just summon an entire new system of logistics out of nowhere for free, and the hungry people aren't just going to go there and pick it up.

  • @SuperShadowsGirl
    @SuperShadowsGirl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Disappointing how they would just destroy their crops instead of, you know, giving it to people in need of it like in shelters and stuff. Helping stop world hunger during the pandemic instead of just letting it all go to waste. All of that could have fed so many people during this trying time.

    • @CruelestChris
      @CruelestChris 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Who's going to ship it to them, who's going to warehouse it in between, and who's going to pay the workers to do that, or _find_ the workers to do it when most of them are in lockdown or sick? You can't just summon logistics from nowhere.
