    Always interesting to hear other views on the XF10 - especially speed of operation and autofocus. There’s nothing else on the market that compares with the XF10 when you consider the price, the size, the image quality and the battery life. JPEG’s sooc are impressive with incredible detail and clarity at this price point. I paid £214 for mine brand new. I tend to shoot at -2/3 exposure then recover then recover the shadows to my liking. The autofocus I use centre point single only and never have a problem - I do that with my Nikon DSLR as well then I pick the focus point rather than a random selection by the camera. The touch screen is anything but sluggish and the flick gestures work perfectly for me every time even with a screen protector on. I think it’s a cracker and walking round with it on a wrist strap everything is at your finger tips. I find the digital teleconverter excellent at 35mm and quite good at 50mm - nice to have the option. And that Classic Chrome - my go to film simulation. No camera is perfect and certainly not at this price point - it’s all about knowing the camera and using its strengths of which the XF10 has plenty.

    For high dynamic range JPEGs, try ISO 800/DR400. Set the exposure compensation to +0.7, highlight tone to -2 and shadow tone to -1 or -2. Oddly enough, I’ve had some success with a similar technique using my OMD.

    Happy New Year Robin! I own the Fujifilm X70 and I'm very pleased with it. I has the same body as the XF10 but the controls are more to my liking. It has a separate aperture ring on the lens. On the top it has a shutter speed dial and one for exposure compensation. It also has a flippable lcd screen. What I like most about it is the size and Fujifilm's film simulations. The almost silent leaf shutter is a blessing. With a leaf shutter I can use a flash on any shutter speed. Yes, X70 has a hot shoe.

    Irrespective of whether the sensor has any advantage over micro 4/3, this camera makes sense from the standpoint of price, pocketability, and ability to deliver fine images. I am unaware that there is anything in the micro 4/3 lineup that is quite like this. The caveats you mention are helpful.

    Hi Robin, such a great review. Cameras have strengths and weaknesses but for me, they are all good, especially nowadays. That XF10's proper pocketability is one of its major strengths. Just like my GM5, which I bring everywhere, portability for me is very important. There may be larger cameras that have better autofocus than the XF10 but what's the purpose of having those if one just leaves them in the car? That's probably why Ricoh and Fujifilm saw the opportunity to make proper street photographer's cameras. Cheers.

    In my experience, using a different camera brings new insights and photos in a slightly different style and technique. I think it's a good idea to use a camera that forces you to take more time for a photo and take more time to prepare for the moment that is to come. If you practice that, you can even achieve your goal with a camera without autofocus. The Fuji is a good addition to the Olympus OM-D which in my experience also has a lightning-fast and accurate autofocus, regardless of any price or camera market segment. I wish you a very good 2021. Hope you and your family all stay healthy. For you, I wish you the best of luck in your career as a photographer in a new world without Lockdown or similar restrictions.

    I loved the whole idea around X70 with good ergonomic, awesome controls, aperture dial and more👌
    I hoped X80 would just make the X70 a little bit better in term of better sensor- WR etc, but instead of that we got SF10 and Fuji brought the lineup backward in term of evolution, imho. Im eagerly waiting for the X80, but dont have any high expectation on that will ever get fulfilled🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @jamescooke5063
      @jamescooke5063 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Imo the x70 was too big to compete with the Ricoh Gr series and be easy to trouser-pocket. The folding screen is too much of an extravagance in a trouser pocket camera. If you want coat pocket size, then get an x100 or eos m etc. My GRII ,like this XF-10, is in practice as pocketable as my smartphone, yet can take photos as nearly good as my 5d4 in terms of family snaps, arguably even better as I can use the flash and snap focus to take photos anywhere, anytime. xf-10 just needs faster single point focus, hotshoe, simple mode dial with user buttons, dng support, more snap focus options and a more direct way to use the flash and flash exp compensation.
      The lens is superb, the way it stays put unlike the Ricoh gr series which retracts and gathers dust, and is a mechanical liability compared to this Fuji.

    I have two Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III and a series of Pro1.2 lenses, as well as two Fuji X-Pro3. But I often use Olympus cameras more often! The hybrid viewfinder function (OVF+EVF) of Fuji X-Pro3 is very good, the focus is accurate, the sharpness is also very high, the automatic white balance is also very accurate, and the restoration of the red white balance is also more accurate! Compared with the super control menu of OM-D E-M1 Mark III, Fuji's super control menu is more intuitive and easier to use! But I still prefer to use OM-D E-M1 Mark III.

    Hi Robin. I saw the 'guess what's in my bag promo', but never guessed this. It's interesting that your first use impressions track so closely with a lot of the other reviews. I've got an XF 10 and generally had the same first results. I then spent some time reading the manual and digging deeper. And, there is a really good long video from one of the Fuji guys that really explores the cameras features. I've spent some time trying to fit how I shoot to how the camera works and have had much better results. At this point, I'm pretty happy with the camera and getting the results I expect--especially in monochrome. For street shooting, consider the 'snap' focus feature. You might be surprised at the results. As for the front ring in the lens. I use it to set the 35mm/50mm crop options. There is no question that you can tell if you've moved it. Lastly, 5 axis IS is pretty amazing on the Olys. I take more care and brace more using this camera and it really helped. Thanks for the review. I think it's discontinued now, so some really bargains on picking up the remaining stocks. Cheers JD

    I have had my XF10 for just over 2 years now. I love it. The only real downside is the AF. It is a bit unreliable and may take 2 or 3 shots to get the focus in low light or at close focus range. Curiously though it does not do this all the time and will often snap into focus at the first attempt. My particular niggle though is the silly non standard filter thread. Why could they not give it a 43/46 or 49mm thread?
    There is no real alternative though for a pocketable camera with this IQ apart from the RIcoh GR (which although functionally better) is twice the price and has its own issues - dust. The XF10 has been criticized for not having a flippy screen like the X70 or its lack of IS, but both of these things would have increased both its size and expense, so are not really fair criticisms (arguably Fuji should have continued with X70 production or released a true successor as well as the XF10) . I always use mine instead of carrying a separate WA lens for my interchangeable lens cameras, as it is quicker than changing lenses and the lack of viewfinder positively encourages the user to try different perspectives and compositions which is very important with WA lenses. If you want a small pocketable, carry anywhere camera its this, the Ricoh or your phone. I hate my phone for photos and I can't put up with dust on the Ricoh's sensor, so for me the XF10 fits the bill and luckily its flaws are not too serious for me.

    The XF10 is a great little camera, and I really don't find it 'slow' at all, in any respect except multi area AF (but I've found that to be the slowest Af on almost every camera I've used). Try single area AF, which is fine, or for truly fast street photography, one of the 2 distance zone focus settings. I've also set the custom button on the thumb grip to be AF-on, so I can set the camera to manual focus, and effectively back button focus. The focus then stays at that distance, so that might be another 'custom' zone focus distance. The image transfer by wi-fi & Bluetooth to a mobile (with the Fuji app installed) is very simple and convenient too. At around £$300, it's a bargain for Fujifilm's answer to the Ricoh GRd.

    Happy new year, dear Robin! Nice to see you back!
    And hopefully you will get a OMD solutions contract...
    Thanks for that review. I see the point of a small camera for street photography. However - as in the old compact camera days: Slow functionality and slow AF always annoyed me. I would just go for the PEN or the E-M10. The latter is great for beginners, and if you wanna safe some money, you could go for a used mkii. Still top technology and ready to
    diverse projects due to exchangeable lenses. My opinion.

      Happy New year to you too! I am happy to be back, and more interesting content coming for sure.
      I don't think there is any available option from the MIcro Four Thirds camp that matches what the XF10 has to offer - reeally small compact form factor, yet fitting in large sized APS-C sensor and a fixed, sharp wide angle lens.

    For someone who wants a relatively small, full featured camera with a fixed 28mm-efl lens then I suggest one of the small m4/3 bodies + Panasonic 14mm f2.5 pancake lens. I would say it is better in most ways and still has the option of changing lenses. For people who don't want an EVF then the small Olympus E-PL7, E-PL8, E-PL9, E-PL10, Panasonic GF10, GF9, GF8. If you want an EVF too then Olympus E-M10II, E-M10IV, Panasonic G100.

    Great video Robin. There's absolutely nothing wrong reviewing other brands, I look forward to see more reviews like this one. I'm an Olympus fan, I own the original E-M1 and you will also find in my camera bag a Fuji X-Pro1 which I adore. I use the Fuji for when I want to slow down a bit and do some B&W landscape or street shooting. I use the E-M1 as my day to day shooter. In terms of dynamic range and overall resolving output, both cameras give very similar images, of course the Olympus is much faster in just about every areas. Happy 2021 :-)

    I shoot Olympus too, for work and pleasure, but bought a used Fuji X70 last year -- something for those days when I just want something smaller than my GX85+12-32. Yes, looked at the Ricoh GR cameras too -- a bit pricey for me, considering my use. The X70 suffers from many of the same issues as the XF10, sluggish operation and slow AF. I like the tilting LCD screen and the aperture & shutter dials. But it has a couple of bad handling issues for me e.g. the power switch overhangs the front and it easy to turn on accidentally. But I'm keeping it for now, for those days I just feel like small, simple camera with fixed lens that forces me to think about composition a bit more. Kinda reminds me of the days when all I had was one camera and a fixed lens :)

    Yes good on you, why not. I have the same camera as well + 11 others Olympus Nikon and Canons and few more here and there that I'm working on I buy repair and sell cameras as a hobby. You are not glued to Olympus and a well deserved experiment. I find that the auto focus is good enough to my like but low light performance is not the best, too many megapixels to start with and nothing is stabilized in the camera. This camera has leaf type shutters which is known to fail, this is interesting because I have an Olympus Pen from 1959 and the leaf shutter still works great. The Ricoh GR equivalents has problems with dust getting on to the sensor and not easy to clean since you have to dismantle the whole thing. Every camera has problems and you can compensate this to have more than one camera so you are covered in every situation. I try to explain this to my wife but she just doesn't understand. Keep telling me: why don't they make a camera that is good for everything? My answer is that is not possible. Happy new year!

    Hi, you may or may not have discovered this but under the Shooting Menu in the AF/MF setting you can select 2 different Snapshot settings which work great for street photography. The camera is set to a preset distance and aperture to give a good depth of field and negates using the cameras autofocus so making it quicker to get the shot. Really like the videos you put out, hope this tip was helpful. Have a Happy and safe New Year.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Snapshot is not that helpful. I'd rather go full manual focus and do zone focusing. If you have not seen, most of my shots where taken at less than a meter's distance from the camera (food shots, people, etc). The snapshot works better for far away subjects. This is still no excuse for poor AF performance of the camera.

    Great review of the XF10 and Happy New Year!
    I just wanted to mention that while the XF10 is a good camera, I don't think it is fair to use its sensor to judge the performance of ALL other APS-C sensors in terms of dynamic range and high ISO performance. If you want to see the benefits of APS-C in terms of dynamic range, the Nikon D7200 cannot be beaten. If you want to judge high ISO APS-C performance and really see a difference, try the Nikon D500. I know those are not the type of cameras you're interested in but they represent the APS-C system better.
    As much as I love the M43 system, I can't help but admit that there is a (sometimes very noticeable) difference between APS-C and M43.

    • @georgvonrechenberg2217
      @georgvonrechenberg2217 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That very well may be (I just trust you, because i have no APS-C experience), but the point is not so much that APS-C has no benefits at all but that APS-C comes with some trade-offs, either by not being as pocketable or by not performing as well. If pocketability is a must-have, one can just stick to M43.

    Happy new year. I also believe that that aps-c is no benefit to the photographer. It has the disadvantages of full frame in terms of weight and size with no real advantage in terms of picture quality over M4/3rds. If there's a format that should die in 2021 it's aps-c. Stay safe and well.

    Hey Robin, Happy (and safe) New Year! Some time ago I've got a Fuji X-M1 and when paired with XF28/2.7 it doesn't seem to be much bigger than this. I like JPGs out of the camera very much and they're probably my favorite among all brands. Together with Olympus, of course. :-) Also their X-Trans sensor really seems to be less prone to (color) aliasing according to my experience so far. All in all, Fuji is a good addition to any Olympus shooter arsenal I'd say. :-)

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not looking for an interchangeable camera, and I want a truly compact camera, the XF10 is still smaller and lighter. XF28mm is not equivalent to 28mm in full frame, and I wanted a true wide angle. I have to disagree with X-Trans sensor, there are many issues (wax like skin tone, poor high ISO fine detail resolving). But let's not go there. If you like your cameras, then continue shooting with it.

    Robin, it is great to see that you are free to explore other brands now. - I have been looking into compact setups with my existing kit and have been contemplating to get the Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 pancake for my E-PL2 or E-P5. As I would only need to get the lens, this would even be cheaper than $350. I don’t know how the setups would compare size-wise? I would see the advantages that I can use existing gear, can still put on a different lens if I want to and don’t have to learn another camera interface. Of course, those Olympus cameras are quite old, too. What are your thoughts?
