I’ve had my x100v for a year and a half. I’m so glad I was able to find one for retail when I did. It was tough to find one then but now it seems like it got way harder to come by. Was trying to help one of my friends find one over the summer and he ended up having to buy used (low shutter count) for over retail. Great video Benj!

Yo! That morphing shot at the beginning with all the different lens hood/cover options was SWEET! I've had my X100V for a couple years now as well and by far the thing I've iterated on the most is the lens hood / front-aesthetic! That morphing transition between so many options is SO on point for what the experience of owning this camera is like 🤣 so rad!

After years of toting a Nikon F3 feeling like a stone around my neck and a heavy bag full of (mostly unused) lenses, I was dubious about a fixed lens camera. Then I thought about my first camera, a 35mm Canon fixed lens rangefinder and remembered how you could engage with your subject, just as you say. And a fixed lens challenges your creativity anyway. Also the aesthetics of the Fuji are just beautiful. I'm sold. Thanks for a great video.

  • @abelardojeda

The leaf shutter in this camera is amazing. I have used the X100V for a few photo shoots on location, the sync speed works really good with my Elinchrom lights.
I use a small SD card/usb-c adapter to transfer the photos to my iPhone/iPad. It is a lot faster than any wifi app. In general I don’t like to open apps and configure things just to transfer images. I prefer the “connect and transfer directly to Lightroom” workflow. Anyway, I don’t feel the urge to publish right away mi pictures, I always take my time in my selection process.
I’m not into cellphone sized cameras, so my most wanted feature is a 1.4 lens. I don’t care if the next version end up being bigger and heavier. I’m sure Fujifilm can handle a middle point design for that.

The fujifilm app…. Here’s how to make the most of it:
Assign a button to turn Bluetooth on/off
    Go shoot.
After particular event, turn Bluetooth on and turn off camera. (Or let it go to sleep)
    Launch app.
If auto-transfer is one, the photos will transfer the photos while camera is not being used.
Keys to a sustained usability with app: every time you update your phone, delete the camera pairing profile from the app and re-pair the camera to the phone.
I found consistent results with this.
    Great video btw!

Great review, Benj. I am the same as you - I have owned the X100V for 2 years and absolutely love it, however agree with some of the annoying things you mentioned (however I didn't realise the quality of the bokeh in the shutter speeds you mentioned). In addition sometimes I've accidentially touched the screen and changed the focus point, or there is a function that cannot be set or changed because eye detect is on (such as Photometry or flash). That's annoying. The lens cap is a bit annoying and I worry about losing it if I go to shove the camera back into my camera bag. Apart from that, I have taken some wonderful photos - certainly the ones that amaze my friends and family are the candid shots done with a film simulation as SOOC's at parties and gatherings and people state "wow, that looks so cool!" That is a good feeling 🙂

Nice review Benj. I have the x100f and thought about upgrading to this one. The main thing that prevents me from using it more is the autofocus is pretty bad. Definitely a fun camera though and doesn't feel like "work" when I use it.

I love it, and haven’t regretted paring down my kit to this and the conversion lenses. I did go out and get a barely used X-T3 and some lenses for astro, landscape and wildlife shooting, but on the current trip that I am on in Massachusetts, it has gotten near equal use as the X-T3. It’s a brilliant camera, and would highly recommend to anyone (if you can find it).

  • @jon-sully
    @jon-sully ปีที่แล้ว +1

FYI Benj, it's pretty buried in the manual (Ken Rockwell mentioned it a few times in his user guide too I think) but the X100V's max shutter speed changes depending on the aperture. (From p.147): "the maximum shutter speed varies with the aperture, from 1/2000 at f/2 to 1/4000 at f/4.5"
If you attempt to go beyond that max shutter/aperture combo, even in manual mode, while set to Mechanical Shutter only, the shutter speed number on screen/in EVF should go red and while it'll still take the shot, you will get the weird motion-blurred bokeh all around the outside of the frame (center should be fine though).
Oddly enough, playing with this just now lead me to find a bug in the X100V firmware. If you set the shutter to M+E and set 1/4000th + F2.0 (beyond what the physical shutter can do), it'll take that shot with Electronic Shutter. That's fine. If you turn the flash on though, now even though you're in M+E, it has to use M, not E (flash doesn't work with electronic shutter)... but it still doesn't turn the shutter speed red! Seems like the code for "Is this shutter speed too fast" is getting a "nope!" because of "M+E is on, so it'll use E" and not realizing that the flash being on means it will actually have to use mechanical. That's a bug!
Just for background and/or others reading: I think the technical premise is that the physical leaf shutter can't actually open up "all the way" at the speed of 1/4000 - it's too much distance to cover in that short of time. So instead it can only open the shutter about half-way... which is fine if the aperture isn't opened up past half-way either. As long as the aperture is stopped down a bit, the shutter can (lazily?) not open all the way up and no light would be lost.
When you force the camera to shoot at 1/4000th with F2.0 (or anything smaller than F4.5) I think we end up seeing shutter interference in the bokeh - they look like motion blur sort of because they are; the motion of the shutter blades not fully getting out of the way directly in line of the path of light that ends up hitting the sensor. It's honestly surprising that there isn't actual vignetting happening around the edges either!

One piece of advice I rarely see mentioned in videos about the X100V and its unavailability is to look for an X100F or even an X100T. These are both very good cameras too, the shooting experience is not dramatically different, and I've seen X100T units go for one third of the price of the X100V on the second-hand market.

Also, do you use the digital tele at all? I’ve recently purchase one because I keep swapping between the 18 and the 35 and thought the x100v could sorta cover that without having to switch lenses while on trips.

    @kalenderquantentunnel9411 ปีที่แล้ว

I liked my X100f and it brought me into the X-System which grew extensively in the years after it got it. But I never got to love it because I disliked the lens: Sharp in the center, good in the corner but not meeting my standards in the field. It suffered from a wavy focal plane which in the meantime I found several sources to confirm. For large prints of landscapes a definitve showstopper in my book. Then came the X100V and the moment I knew it had an improved optical formula I knew I had to have it, preorded it, and I wasnt disappointed! With some other kinks removed from its predecessor the X100V is simply a joy to use and can do everything you could ask from a camera this size and concept with a 24 MPix sensor. It's no surprise to me it is constantly on backorder. Simply love it and I would put it on one level with my trusty Nikon FE2 which I also consider one perfect camera within its concept and also went for crazy high prizes after beeing discontinued by Nikon in 1988. And the WA-Conversion lens is also great btw.

I own a Fujifilm X100S since 2014. Everything you said about the X100V holds true with my X100S if excepted a few technicalities that can be acceptable to most of us. The resolution is 16 MP and not 26 MP. I don't have a problem with that. The maximum shutter speed is 1/4000 compared to the X100V 1/32000.
The really big drawback of the X100S is the autofocus, compared to the newer models. But again, this is not a deal breaker.
If I was to upgrade, I would pick the X100F over the X100V because of the four way controller.
I have used the X100S since 2014, eight years and it is still going strong. I don't mind that the X100S autofocus will not lock on the eyes of the subject. I also like that the NP95 cheapo batteries are aplenty on the usual sites.
I take this camera everywhere with me, I use a holster on my belt and if I need the camera for an impromptu shot, it is always there.
I completely concur with Benj; the X100 Fujifilm is among the best "goto" camera you can have. I use it over any phone. I use a real Leica strap when I don't use the holster. But I like straps promoted by Benj.
I am going to get them.

Amen on the app. It's terrible. I too have had my X100V for a couple years. I absolutely love it. My biggest complaint is the focus mode switch. It is sooo hard to flip to continuous without overshooting. Is there a secret that I don't know about? :)

Ironically, I just sold my V to return to the F, after about 2 years... I love almost everything about the V, but I really struggled with two things (both related to personal preferences:
    1) The eye-detect sensor really doesn't play well with my sunglasses. The F is measurably better, and the X-T's are better again.
    2) I really don't get on with the joystick/touchscreen interface. I shoot OOC jpegs, and I need to change WB regularly (I find manual WB makes a big difference for the Fuji OOC). I just find this a lot easier on the F than the V.
Both those elements combine to make my experience a bit worse. I often found myself frustrated by the V.

Quick question: I love my X100V too but I have a gripe that I sort of need to confirm with someone who knows their s**t.
I enjoy the optical viewfinder but I struggle with the light meter - if I miss the exposure by a long way, for example forgetting my settings or leaving the ND filter on, the dot on the light meter dial disappears. It’s like “sorry, man, you’re way off so I can’t tell you what to do”.
I often have to take it away from my eye, check all my settings and/or check the screen to see where I’m at (not the point of the ovf, really). I’m capable of shooting with a simple light meter on film cameras, using a v basic one on my phone, but this problem really bugs me.
Have you experienced it? If not, what might I be doing wrong? Does it tell you somewhere that you’re way over or way under on the ovf?
    J

I think that if you keep ISO under 3200, prints at that size should be fine. The grain will be noticeable though. IMO Fuji’s grain feels very film like, even in color. But at higher ISOs you’ll be loosing some detail at that size.

The Sony is a great camera but the 100v is my companion. Unlike the Sony it comes everywhere with me. The most endearing thing for me about the 100v is that every time I look at it or use it, it makes me smile. I know it is just a camera but like your first car, it's just a car, but it isn't.

  • @aroach337

Ok so I've been using mine pretty much non stop since I got my hands on one back in February. The few downsides: turning on the flash on/off takes a LOT of clicks/manipulation and I hate it. Sometimes I need to move between different settings and it takes so much time. It's pretty obvious when you compare to all the other things/settings you can change manually and so easily such as aperture, ISO and time of exposure. I HATE IT.
The Fujifilm app is bollocks... It does kinda work once in a while but it's really annoying.
EXCEPT THAT. EXCEPT the two small things I've said... It's a camera that made me fall in love with photography again. And I'm saying that as a portrait & commercial photographer with 15 yrs of experience. I love it so much. I carry it pretty much non stop with me and yeah. That's it. If you can afford one or if you're lucky enough to find one quickly, I would say just go for it. You won't regret it.

Try this to make the app more reliable: Hit "Play" to go into playback mode. Now hit the top Function button, the one to the right of the shutter release; this starts wi-fi on the camera. Now, on your iDevice, go to "Settings" and connect to the camera's wi-fi network. Now, on the iDevice, launch the app. Now you can view and download pics. Once I got this working (as I recall, I might have had to "pair" the camera and the phone the first time), it works every time, simple. For me this camera is a bit of a love hate thing. I love the looks and I wanna pick it up and bring with me all the time. What is a huge let down is autofokus - particularly continuous autofokus. It's really slow and I often miss shots. And the digital viewfinder is very low resolution. Another thing is that the lens is just ok. It's not very sharp wide open - at least compared to my Nikon S-lenses for my Z-system. (Perhaps an unfair comparison) I just wish the X100V performed at bit more like I'm used to with my Nikon Z7 II. (I know Leica Q2 would be the answer, but the cost is too high for an everyday-documenting-my-life-camera. So I guess this is as good as it gets at the moment.
