    You asked, I deliver 😘 This is a fun twist on my usual coloring method, also it’s 1200% faster (but only if you understand regular shading) - if that’s a problem I have a shading class that might help th-cam.com/video/Gmt6wtU9tUQ/w-d-xo.html

      its possible to start with cel shading like this and then go to a more rendered painting? Like, I know its silly, but render it to get rid of the lines and make it look more 3d take a lot of time.

    Cell shading looks amazing, but I actually find it much more difficult than doing a soft shading because I need to know exactly where the edges of the shapes are supposed to go to, and ooof... Hard 😅

    • @IshikaShanai
      @IshikaShanai ปีที่แล้ว +32

      It's honestly more about shape design rather than anatomically correct edges and shapes. The more graphic the approach, the cooler the shadow and highlight shapes appear.

    • @monikacau01234
      @monikacau01234 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes! Exactly! It is harder and force me to understand the shape! I need more reference and often ended up using 3d model in blender just to see where the shadow and light is

    There is a much simpler way of doing cel shading:
    create 1 layer for inking lineart.
    create 1 layer for colors.
    then create 1 layer for shadows. Change it to multiply. Choose a midtone almost grey color. A warm or cold color will change the mood of the shadows. This shadow layer must be over the color layer. Paint on it the shadows however you like.
    Then create 1 layer for higlights. Change it to add. Choose a midtone almost grey color too. Warm vs Cold colors will change the highlight mood also. Paint the highlights however you want. This higlight layer should be over the outline layer.
    The layers' order should be like this:
    highlights
    outlines
    shadows
    colors
    You can bypass the color layer and do the shadows layer first, if you want to focus on the tones. And paint the colors in the end.

    • @Webisyen

      This sounds like a great tip! I will try. Thanks for sharing. 👍

      What is the “outline”? Is that the lineart layer

    • @alexl7213
      @alexl7213 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@TheMontegoEffect Yes. It depends on the style you want to do, but usually, it's a line-art layer.
      Highlights
      Line-art
      shadows
      colors
      Sometimes I use a more artistic style:
      I start with sketch layers (1 or more)
      Then add a grey generic color layer (to define middle tone)
      then do a shadows layer, and a highlights layer.
      This way, I work of the tones in greyscale.
      After that, I add color layers.
      And in the end, the line-art layer.
      Other times, I go for a traight comics style:
      I start with sketch layers
      Then go for a line-art layer
      Then refine that line-art layer into an "ambient occlusion layer" - that is basically weighted lines+strong shadows.
      Then I do a generic grey color layer
      Add shadows layer
      Add highlight layer
      And in the end, color.

    • @TheMontegoEffect
      @TheMontegoEffect 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alexl7213 this is very informative thank you, I hesitate whenever I think about shading and highlights before color, it seems out of the norm to me, but I’ll add these to my notes and give it a try

    • @alexl7213
      @alexl7213 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheMontegoEffect It's the basics of comic art. They always start with sketch from the main drawing artist, then the inking, and then they go for color. Golden era of comics didn't have shadows or higlights, unless they were done in inking. But with digital era, this changed. It's easier now to add shadows and lights, so comics appear with a shadow layer, and lights are sometimes integrated into color, other times, done separately. It depends on the artists doing it, and the workflow.
      Graphic novels tend to take more time and work on these layers. Book covers, many times change to a more artistic approach, trading line-art for brush work.
      Remember, many comics and mangas are done first in black-and-white, and only after a few successful volumes, they get a color version.

    For anyone new to this too-cel shading is what I use to lay out my shadows and lighting. I used it more when I was a beginner, but I think it’s great when you’re starting because you’re not fussing about blending and softness. You’re not wasting time either if a shadow is wrong you can quickly correct it rather than rebrushing and blending stuff.
    It helps you define the light and form quickly too. I use a combination of cel and soft shading depending on the illustration I’m working on. It can make really cool effects if you use bright or complementary colored hues for your shadows. I love red and purples for this reason. Really pops against fleshy colors.

    Have you ever made a video talking about how to use the lasso tool exactly? It sounds super obvious but everytime I've tried to do it my own work it just feels really clunky and imprecise. So many artists talk about using it though I feel like I have to be doing something very wrong with it.
    Also, interesting video. I feel like 'pro' artists very rarely talk about cel-shading so it was cool to see your approach to it.

    I was kinda using this style by default, and it was ok IMO; now I have a better understanding of it.
