I do hope the cabling is not soy based, so that you don’t have rodents eating the cabling. I have had packrat problems where rodents have made nests inside our tractor and chewed up the wiring harness. Not only was it at pain to rewire, it is a spot that is almost impossible to block off so they don’t come back. So make sure the wiring is not tempting for rodents to eat and make sure all your boxes are sealed to prevent nesting. Don’t want a truck disabled because a rat wanted lunch.

Great video. Looks like you had a great time. So many of the things you showed reminds me of my trip to China for a business trip with a friend. Amazing place. Amazing people. Welcoming. Bright. Clean. Massive construction. A forest of highrise cranes, building skyscrapers. Oozing with capitalism. Warm people, huge dinners. We had this dish of duck tongues with duck bills still attached. Reminded me of Daffy Duck when he gets is bill knocked off. Lots of sea creatures with eyes that looked at you.
A year later a call was received from a customer about a problem with one of the machines our company makes. A problem that had never been seen before. Turns out it was not our machine. Looked like ours, but it was an EXACT copy, built to sub par standards out of poor materials. I loved China. I don't know if you all have any big trade secrets, just be aware.
All the people you connected with are likely honest, wonderful people, but they are not the ones who are incharge. Our friend who led us around was called June, a wonderful lady. She was so sad when she found out our stuff had been reversed engineered.
The language barrier is real. You may swear you have hammered out ALL the details, but don't be surprised if there are communication issues. By sactually going there you will avoid many pitfalls.
Can't wait for more videos on Topsey testing, and pickup progress with Deboss.

I'm not sure how much cost this would add (or how feasible it is from an electronics/safety standpoint), but it would be neat to have an extra high voltage connection integrated in the charging harness from the factory. This would make it easier for customers or you guys to add a NACS (or even MCS connector whenever those chargers start rolling out) connector to the truck or add an additional CCS charge port to another location on the truck to make it accessible to a wider array of chargers, like the Audi etrons.

All these comments knocking Edison for working with Chinese manufacturing, yes it can be of dubious quality, but it can also be good quality, knowing how to get the good stuff is the key to finding Chinese suppliers. Honestly what other option do they have ? Even if they worked with some North American company to manufacture battery packs, controllers, and computers, where do you think that company will go to get the parts ? The electronics supply and manufacturing chain in NA is honestly embarrassing, and its not economically viable. Never mind the fact that the our government turned its back on Edison Motors, while swindling money for their own gains as they always do. There's a reason why Edison is the first OEM in Canada since the 80's.

@@ResourceRentals I can pretty certainly say there is no IP that Edison Motor's has that they don't already have. Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking Chace or Edison, the idea of bringing to market a hybrid semi truck is a no brainer and a way to move North American industry into the modern age, however what they are doing is essentially a giant Arduino / Lego technics set, they are taking off the shelf parts and fitting them to a standard truck.
There's no real IP behind that, no custom designed modules, no custom software, which, if you remember is their goal, they want easy to manufacture, easy to repair trucks, call up the parts store and grab an off the shelf part without the hassle and for the love of god, I hope they take a page out of John Deere's book and use it as what not to fucking do.
Spinning up manufacturing on a custom controllers, custom charger, e-axles, etc, all application specific is extremely expensive, we all know they don't have that kind of working capital even going to China it costs 100's of millions at the scale needed its not worth the cost when existing solutions already exist, why re invent the wheel.
I seriously doubt any Chinese manufacturer would have any success bringing to N/A market a retrofit kit in competition to Edison.

You can get what you ask for in China.
If you ask for the cheapest possible price, you get that cheap crap that'll only last a year.
But you can also ask for specific measures of quality if you're willing to pay extra. If you ask for automated and double manual quality control of every unit shipped they can find a price for that as well.
I know you guys are not programmers, and the battery manufacturers are supposed to know what is best for their batteries. So it makes sense to buy the software with the batteries.
But you mention a paradox within software... you can get super simple and stable software that will never fail, because it's easy to do unit tests on, but that won't be user-friendly. Once you ask for user friendly the software behind becomes complex and the risk of bugs goes up. You can't have both, so take care what you ask for in that regard.
I'd ask for the control and safety software to be separate from the user interface software, they can both be delivered by the same supplier of course, but it'll force them to keep the two code bases separate..
And if you ask them to document how those two interact, it'll be possible to swap one or another part in the future, even if the company goes bankrupt or changes their platform entirely.

@@Redbloodroadrunner it is sad, and it will take some major efforts from both government and corporate to catch up.
China has the mining and supply chain in check when it comes to rare earth minerals.
And the way their manufacturing is put together is also mentioned in the video. It works much more like open source, most manufacturers specialise in one thing and source each other for the stuff they can't do themselves. They are not particularly afraid of competitors copying their products, they'll just steal back any innovation the competition comes up with.
Western companies try to keep a lot of business secrets, in China it's the opposite. They compete on price, capacity and quality, not so much on innovation.

I remember an interview Bobby Llewellyn of Fully Charged did with Jim Farley a while ago. Farley talked about the problems that Legacy OEMs like Ford have with software. 12:55
Historically OEMs would buy (for example), Central Locking systems from one supplier, Electric Windows from another, Air-Con from a 3rd Etc.Etc. and they ALL had their OWN Propriatory Software to run their own systems. Getting them all to play nicely together was a nightmare. With EVs and the Software needed to control the electric side of things, that got many times worse (just look at VW's problems a while age). Tesla, being a Computer Manufacturer that happens to make Cars and Trucks, have their own answers to making Software work. So Tesla can have one computer to run 10 systems, where Ford or BMW would have to have 10 Computers that all tend to swear at each other from time to time. Having all your eggs in one basket may have it's risks, but "Keep Things Simple" is good advise for a reason!

CCS is what's used outside of the US so there is constant development into that, too. And it has been around for a long time. I suspect it was just easier going with that as the NACS (Tesla plug but based on CCS) is pretty new and focused on cars.
Also there is the European heavy truck charging standard MCS (based on CCS) coming online with up to 3.75 MW. Which is what will make electric trucking more viable as batteries keep getting better. It's not like a heavy truck with trailer can easily pull up to a Tesla supercharger or other car chargers anyways. There needs to be dedicated infrastructure for that.
