    Hi, thank you so much for watching this video. Recapping the 5 hard truths:
    1. Moving to another part of the world can create a sense of isolation or loneliness. You are no longer nearby your friends, family, community you once knew. Go out and connect with others in your new community as soon as you can.
    2. Avoid boredom. Plan your hobbies, side gig, or whatever you want to create for your new-found abundance of time during the day.
    3. Respecting and accepting other cultures is key to living a happy life. Not everyone does things 'our way' or 'my way'. Be okay with their lifestyle because they are already okay with our lifestyle.
    4. No matter where you move to, even to a new city, there's a learning curve on how to get things done how to buy things, or live the new life, etc. Be open to discovering how other people are living/doing things in the world.
    5. We are guests no matter how long we lived here. Be mindful of the rules of the country.

    Great video, one of the things that hit me the hardest when I moved to Bali was not being able to jump in the car and drive anywhere by myself. I had to rely on my husband to take me everywhere on the scooter because I felt nervous to drive the scooter by myself. I did step up in the end and learn to ride the scooter, but I always felt a bit scared!! Go jek and Grab are great, but it's better to have your own set of wheels!!

      You are sharing something exactly what my mom's biggest frustration is. She used to drive everywhere when she lived in the US and now she's at the mercy of getting a Go Jek car and can't just pull over when she wants to veer off course in another direction. Less freedom for sure when you are being driven to one destination and can't stop somewhere in between.

    Things I am grateful for living here are the holiday feeling. Every day can feel like a holiday, especially if we live in a villa with a pool and are surrounded by greenery. Not only that, but we can also take a proper holiday or staycation, even if it is still in the same area where we live, or at least two hours away. Another thing is that we can live near a busy street, but our house/villa is 200 meters inside the alley or gang, and it is quiet and has a totally different atmosphere 200 meters away just like yours. Oh, don't forget, you can book a proper dinner or all you can eat lunch/brunch in a nice hotel even without staying and they are many. The community is amazing too. We can always meet friends or family who are visiting because Bali is one of the hub of tourist destinations in Asia.

      It's like you are sharing exactly my experience living here, except for the part of a quiet area. Other than that you are spot on with everything else on living here. We live near Lucky Day and it's one of the busiest parts of Bali it seems. I wish we lived in a quieter area, but then we would sacrifice the walkability of the town. Thank you for sharing. ;)

    • @5hf2024
      @5hf2024 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Oh, I see. From what I saw in your old videos, I thought you were close to the main street but still in a quiet part inside the gang. I personally live around 250 meters from the main street of Teuku Umar, and it's a busy main street, but my house is quiet despite the close proximity. I've seen many parts of Bali like that. The busy area is just somewhere in the corner, but behind several villas, it can be a totally different world, especially if the place is inside a gang or alley. I am sure you know what I mean. For example in Umalas area, Berawa, Pererenan, Sanur, Ubud, etc. Many places are still quiet.

    • @5hf2024

      I want to add also that We have quiet good service delivery with little fee. To me, Gojek and Grab are super helpful when I am lazy to cook or need transport to the airport by car. It's extremely convenient. Another thing is Alfamart or Indomaret app where I can buy things online and delivered to my door with 0 delivery fee especially alfamart. I don't need to carry 19 liter water gallon to refill or gas for cooking, they will deliver to my door even in 1-2 hours after paying. Sometimes I just ask them to leave it in my terrace when I am not home.

    • @retiredlifeinBali
      @retiredlifeinBali  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@5hf2024 I've stopped using Go Food (Go Jek food or Grab) apps for food delivery because the drivers are not responding or respond then cancel and I've waited 2-3 hours and just end up canceling because there's no movement and the cafes are not preparing the food until the go food driver arrives. It's been a mess. But I do make my own food about 95% of the time. I didn't know that about Indomerat or Alphamart. We live near a small market in case we run out of tp or oat milk. lol.

    • @retiredlifeinBali
      @retiredlifeinBali  วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @it's quiet where we are for the most part during the day. We have the best neighbors next door to us. But because we are close to the bars and there are so many other villas for rent nearby can lead to noise at night. Also, fireworks/firecrackers are let off every once in a while on the street and freaks us all out.

    Hello from CA & many thanks 4 the great video! Remembering the days of visas with & without boyfriend, staying in Chinatown in Singapore & eating delicious seafood. What is your writer's name? Lots to do in Bali. Really surprised about the volunteering, even teaching or practicing English? Hang in there. Take care.

    Nice video, Debbie. I am pleased to see more women taking the plunge into the world and finding their own global space. As a person who traveled all of my adult life working in the offshore oil industry,, I am quite at ease with moving between countries. My biggest challenge sometimes is finding enough likable foods that allow me to cook at home. It's not a pleasant thought but try to be mentally prepared for the day that your Mom is no longer with you. All the best!

      @retiredlifeinBali  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Thank you Mike for your contribution. Sounds like you are a man of the world. So happy for you. I agree with you on visiting the country to see if the foods are good. To be honest, I feel lucky to have the organic veggies/fruit options as well as the large western influences which I just love. And you are right, I'm not yet thinking about mom's passing, just trying to keep her healthy and taken care of for now. All the best to you!

      @@retiredlifeinBali Thanks for your nice response. I am 74 and have been married to a Filipina for 31 years, and fortunately, she does all the cooking. We lived in the US nearly all of our marriage but recently came to the Philippines. Honestly, I would rather live in Malaysia because the food there is so awesome., The infrastructure is much more modern and the medical is first-class. The financial requirements are too steep for us to qualify to immigrate and live there. However, as Americans, you can go and get a 90-day visa upon entry. The street food there runs parallel to the same food options that you will find in Singapore with a nice mix of Chinese, Indian, and Malaysian. I spent 7 days around Kuta Beach Bali back in 1991 after completing an oil survey offshore the islands of Bali and Lombok. Honestly, I can recall very little about the place.

      Hi LoueeLouii (and of course that song pops into my head). Yes, I visited Bali 4 times before. The first time was during 9/11 2001...and at that time there were no tv's where I was staying and someone said something to me on the beach, so I rushed around to find a tv and found one in a small bar but the only station was asian and in another language, so I could only watch the video of what was happening and sending emails to my family. I couldn't call at that time. Now we all use Whatsapp to call internationally and there are plenty of tv's but for some reason that moment when I saw the planes crash sitting in that little bar, I felt so safe being in Bali.
