    The thought of retirement makes me cry. My apologies to everyone who have retired and filing social security during this time after putting in all those years of work just to lose everything to a problem you never imagined to happen. It's so difficult for people who are retired and have no savings to fall back on.

      Effective personal finance management is more important than the amount of money saved, regardless of whether income is earned through job or investment.Individuals can seek counsel from a certified financial advisor to optimize financial outcomes, who can provide specialized advice and methods to decrease expenses and maximize income.

    what is a Stay Visa? ALSO i love your mom! "I love consuming!" she is so real. I am 63 and just beginning to look at places to retire. I have looked at Mysore, India and Bali and few other places. I have seen videos about how Bali USED to be affordable but now the cost of living has really gone up.

    • @retiredlifeinBali
      @retiredlifeinBali  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Hi Bobby ;) thanks for your comments, yes, finding a place that feels like home will take some time. Indonesia considers a non-visitor visa (or non tourist visa) a stay visa. There are so many kinds of stay visas though and they change almost every month. It gets kind of confusing, hence why I need a visa agent. Yes, the cost of living has increased, but not a lot...the government needs to keep some of the basics low for the locals as their monthly income isn't a lot. The increases are like imported items - taxing higher for imports.

    It was interesting hearing about your healthy lifestyle choices and consumerism ways. Was it hard to find a place for your mum? I would imagine a lot of people rent yearly, but only stay for a few months at a time and travel onwards etc. It costs a fair amount to get out of Australia so having a good second home with access to greater east Asia would be good.

    3-Emergency room vet expenses?
    4-Any dog parks to play with other dogs unleashed? Mine is almost 1 year old and doesn’t know to stick with me when unleashed yet.
    5-Does the dog have to go in and out of the country with you every time you renew your visa or can it stay and just I go and come back the same day?
    6- is it easy to find dog foods/treats/toys…etc? Good quality?
    7-is it easy to find dog grooming shops? How are the prices? ( eg: I remember women hairdressers in Bali were not cheap)

    Hello from CA. Thanks 4 the wonderful video on your eating habits & sourcing local, organic food. What's the difference in regular coconut vs. electrolyte coconut? Heat still gets 2 get 2 me & found A/C helped me the most, besides copious amounts of water & tabs. People may consume certain things out of habit, without realizing it, esp with Amazon delivering in hours. I miss the wonderful, affordable massages in Indonesia with friendly, smiling people and conversations with locals. Your internet is very reasonable. Do you have a stable internet connection? Hello Liz :) Great question about coconut water. I actually found out one of the reasons why I was getting migraines at age 49 plus was because I lacked sodium...and not just regular salt but it's been proven Himalayan salt is actually the key to the electrolytes. Even though coconut water has electrolytes in in, adding Himalayan salt which has trace minerals (like iron) gives the body the extra kick it needs especially when you lose water (example: sweating in this humidity). Of course I'm not a doctor and not telling anyone to go buy Himalayan salt (people have dietary restrictions) but for me, the salt with minerals (added to coconut water) helps the your body absorb fluids more efficiently, so you're getting rehydrated faster and stays in the body a lot longer. The other ingredient in the electrolyte juice is lemon juice. Sorry for the long-winded answer. Then the other question was the internet. We have Global Extreme which is pretty fast. I've had others, and Global is top notch, very little disruption (once every 5 months a few hours) and they are fast to fix anything...plus mom and I share the wifi together so we don't have that cost in her budget (since I already pay for it $24 a month). Thank you for your kindness. Cheers to you!

    One more question please? I noticed a lot of Aussies have also settled in Bali, I’m also from Australia. But what I want to ask is they suddenly find themselves helping locals who shall we say”less fortunate “. I don’t like using that term . But if they have the means then they do as much as they can. Eg, helping individuals with medicines and local school children even building homes? Have you been inclined to help the locals in anyway. Some sections are very poor! Thanks

    • @retiredlifeinBali

      Hello, by law, Mom and I can't volunteer. We do contribute to the locals in many ways. I have not found the Balinese to be poor. They are hard working, take care of each other within the families, and like everyone else in the world, can use an extra tip or two. So I am mindful of this. I donate things I don't use anymore (clothes, linens) to a local womens shelter.

      Hi Dawn, there are many freight forwarders that will do this, but to be honest, letting go of what we had and starting over was so much easier. Also, what if you change your mind in 6 months...don't get stuck. If you are unsure about letting go of stuff, find a very cheap storage for 6 months while you travel and see if you miss any of it. There are many places that are fully furnished too.

    Merry Christmas to you both!!! Thanks for this very informative video. I am a 62 year old ex pat retired in the Philippines. Your budget is similar to mine. I pay $300 per month for my International Cigna Silver insurance plan. It covers hospitalization (so more serious incidents) but not routine or outpatient treatment; for those I just pay out of pocket. Then for those visits back to the States, the coverage is $1.5M. I am just waiting until age 65 when I can get Medicare. Then I will use that and self insure in the Philippines. That's my strategy...am curious if anyone has a better solution. Thanks !!!

    I really enjoyed your video. My question is why did you pay almost 80k for rent? I calculate 660x 120. than you spent money renovating a place that you don't own. Why not build your own and have a suite for mom? I hope I'm not being rude.

    • @retiredlifeinBali
      @retiredlifeinBali  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Fair question. I didn’t consider having mom move here in 2020 when I signed my lease. In hindsight I would have done things differently. But I could say that about anything I did in life. So I’m in the path I took and moving forward. Who knows where we are next. I still today including renovation pay $660 a month for a custom home 8 minutes walk to the beach) which is 1/3 ~ 1/4 less than any decent apartment in the US (outside California but what’s the point then?) you live and learn. Bottom line if I rented an apartment for $1500 a month I would pay 180,000 in rent in 10 years. That’s if my landlord won’t increase the rent. Which now I hear renters are increased every year and pay utilities. Read this again if you need to. Seriously.

      @@retiredlifeinBali The reason I brought up the question is because you said you 10 years upfront. I think that's a lot of money. You could have purchased something with that large sum of money. I don't mean to be intrusive. I'm not saying the rent is high. I live in NYc and rent for a two bedroom is my neighborhood is run up to 5000. It's just the large sum you had to pay upfront.

      Some of the money I profited from selling my house in LA was given for the Bali home up front. You are right, it's a lot of money to give up front. Not to cheapen it and or compare this is apples to apples, but it's like buying in bulk. If you shop at Costco, you pay more up front to buy in bulk, but you are saving long term. Buying 1 roll of TP is more expensive if you buy 30 rolls at a time. I mentioned in my other comment my choices are I either pay $180k plus plus (who knows how much more if the landlord increases the rent) or $80k fixed, custom, etc. It's a different concept that what is normal in the US, I know. But it's the path I chose and am very glad I did. If I were to renew, I'm still paying less in 10 years than in the US. By the way, there's always a hindsight (should've could've would've) if I kept my house and taken out equity and moved, my house is worth double than what I sold it for. So there's that. There's a small part of me that misses the house I sold, but for me, life is NOT about a house, money, or things...it's about learning and challenges and the actual journey of here to there. Sorry for the longwinded answer.

    I'm living in Bali more then 15 years and have never been able to live on this kind of budget.
    Don't believe everything you hear on TH-cam.
    Even though there are people who manage to live on that budget.
    In this example the salaries for 2 workers that you are obliged to hire as retirees are missing. Also obligatory health insurance is missing.
    You will not be able to find a decent house for 500$.

    • @retiredlifeinBali
      @retiredlifeinBali  หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Hi Doris, I really appreciate another perspective.I agree you can't always believe what you hear on TH-cam. But other than physically posting a photo of our yearly contract for mom's house, or my contract for my house, you have to take our word for it. Yes that rent is $500 a month USD ($6,000 a year USD - or 97,000,000 rupiah) and it does exist. Mom doesn't live in a high end villa with a pool. She lives in a 2 bedroom 2 bath bungalow. Also, your comment about mandatory 2 people, please advise where this is written. My Mom and I each do have a maid and I have a pool cleaner. If one lives in an apartment and isn't hiring a pool cleaner, how do you account for a second employee? So the reasoning of 2 people goes out the window for those living in a apartment. Health Insurance is different for everyone. It's not a one size fits all. Mom still pays her Medicare payment in the US. I am not an insurance agent so I'm not going to quote on prices. Wishing you all the best!

      @retiredlifeinBali Hi xxx
      About employees you have to read the requirements for the visa. I don't make the rules, it's the government.
      About housing I wrote that I know people living on that budget. But housing prices skyrocket because of videos like this.
      About health care. If you need to go to the hospital you need to pay before they do something. So better have a good health insurance. And medical care is more then double then in Europe.
      It's my experience sitting in the hospital watching people in pain until finally I payed for someone I didn't even knew.

      Some people are best ignored.
      Also, at least in America, people with money have no clue as to how cheaply one can live if they pretty much only have the necessities. I live on around a $1000 a month in a very expensive part of California and am quite sure the majority of people here have no idea how I do it. I love your diplomacy.
      Also as far as content goes, I am pretty much interested in simply your day to day life and imagine others are also. That’s why a “a day in my life” videos are so popular. Just what you guys do each day in a different place and culture.
