How do ventilators work? - Alex Gendler

  • Take a journey into the respiratory system to see how ventilators bypass constricted airways and help damaged lungs send oxygen to the body.
    --
    In the 16th century, physician Andreas Vesalius described how a suffocating animal could be kept alive by inserting a tube into its trachea and blowing air to inflate its lungs. Today, Vesalius’s treatise is recognized as the first description of mechanical ventilation- a crucial practice in modern medicine. So how do our modern ventilators work? Alex Gendler explains the life-saving technology.

    I was in a medically induced coma in august this year because I intentionally poisoned myself by eating a plant. I had a temporary pacemaker for 2 or 3 days and I was on a ventilator for a week (tube in my nostril down my throat I think, my voice is still damaged). Woke up after 5 days with the tube still in my nose, it hurt. I could hear the machine. Then I was put back to sleep and woke up again 2 days later. Such a strange experience, I feel nauseous writing about it now. I was so close to dying, yet here I am with no permanent damage. Truly grateful.

    I'm really glad this video exists. But it does bring back some bad memories from when my grandpa had to go on it. I'll never forget how painful it looked, and what they don't tell you is that while you're on a ventilator you can't cough, so every few hours the nurses would come in and insert a second smaller tube down the main breathing tube that would go further into the lungs to clean out the mucus since the body can't do it itself. Even under sedation I could see his body struggling and heart rate go up as they were doing this and it's just truly horrible to watch. Please just don't get covid, don't make your family members watch you go through that too.

    As an ICU nurse, I wish that there would be operator-easy and user-friendly ventilators. Could someone invent ventilators that are cost-effective and easy-to-use?

    • @joeplus3836
      @joeplus3836 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The one I was in, was brand new to the hospital but only certain staff could use them because the nurses hadn't gotten the training to use them yet but they seemed really easy to set up and use, even I learned how most of It worked just by looking at them settings it up. Maybe soon enough those will be the standard.

    Believe me, you don't want to be ventilated it's like waterboarding and you have no control over it. If you have asthma be especially wary that they treat your asthma instead of turning up the damn torture device.

    Interestingly and this is somewhat a cautionary tale. Being put on a vent can signal to your lungs to "give up" and let the vent do all the work leaving the lungs more vulnerable to the attack resulting in cases where a body capable of surviving has its legs taken out by a crutch and flatlines.

    • @nazirulhaqim4612
      @nazirulhaqim4612 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interestingly and true story. Seen hundreds of patients sedated and ventilated. But majority (like more than 95%) were able to be discharged without any breathing problems. They can return to their normal life as before.
