I'm 36 and I've been using the pinaud lilac vegetal since my 20s for the same reasons. Reminds me of the old barbershop I used to go to as a kid. I also used to use English Leather deodorant until they stopped making it because that's what my grandfather wore and I shave with a double edged razor and shaving brush/mug because that's how my dad shaved. Something about old nostalgic items really intrigue me. That's one of the reasons I love this channel so much, getting to see all of the old tools that I've never seen before or used. Love it!
Old Spice still makes the classic round stick formula deodorant. I use it everyday. Can’t beat it. I get it from target or any of the supermarkets have them. 2 packs.
Thank goodness you actually restored this, and didn't ruin it, by replacing the handle with some rubbish. I have the long Estwing hatchet to restore, which will be a lot easier - and my handle is very much like yours.
My dad was a barber and would cut my hair. I always enjoyed the hot towel and then the hot lather from a machine, then trim my neck with a straight razor. He splashed something smelly from a bottle on my neck, but I don’t remember what it was called. What a treat. Beautiful hammer, nice job!

When he died I asked for it but was denied. I bought a used one for $10 about the same condition of yours. I’ve been wanting to restore it but that handle had me scratching my head. Hello my Jarhead Friend and Brother. Scout way prior to that Fine haircut Uncle Sam gave us at Either San Diego or PI. I am a Hollywood Marine. My old barber #1 was Bald LOL. He wore a rug sometimes but he had that Disease that made it so you could not grow any body hair. Just a little funny that he never grew hair but became a Barber. LOL. #2 I absolutely remember the exact same stuff you had with the Lilac smellum. When my Dad and I went to the barber on those Saturday mornings after going to the local diner for breakfast (so the older fellers could set around and tell lies to see who came up with the best story) of course that was the highlight of my week when my Dad and I went to get a hair cut. But they also used some smellum that actually had the words ( no credit for correct spelling because I believe it was French for cologne) Toilet De water in a bottle just like yours and it was the same type of slap on the back of the neck (not like falling asleep in boot camp classes slap) but a very good patting down. Good Memories. I am 54 now my dad has only been gone 5 years but back when I was 12-15 that was the shizzzzle. Too beautiful to use but a lovely thing. I think as I get older certain smells or sounds transport me back to boyhood for a few seconds and good memories. Great video as always.
I agree Tony. I think smells are a stronger reminder than sight or sound. My three month old grandson was just getting the hang of sight and sound but he could track Mom, Dad, and his bottle in the dark.
Hi John, hope you are well? I like your idea of using paper to spacer the buffing wheel. I imagine could do that same thing on a Grinding wheel as well. I use PVC pipe that I cut a slit in for spacers or shimming but I may try the paper trick next time I switch out a wheel. I got the idea of the PVC pipe spacers from the LADY who I get my tools from. She owns a tool store and gets all sorts of tools.I really love those old Estwing hammers or hatchets even. Estwing used to make super good tools and back and the day you wasn't gonna nail on a roof without one. Used to do some roofing LOLOL...Anyways AS ALWAYS ANOTHER EXCELLENT VIDEO!! Love the video's! That is a beautiful hammer. Spectacular job. I don't remember that particular brand from the barber shop - but I do remember going to motocross races and falling in love with the smell of Castrol 2-stroke motor oil. Nothing else like it.
Sure remember the barber cologne. My dads go to was Hia Karate, he would put that on and mom would send us out to play for a couple hours.Took a few years to figure that out haha!
As per usual this was my true highlight of my Monday. You make the start of the week so much more enjoyable! I don't own one yet but the estwing hammer is my favorite hammer model. I have had a leather stacked Estwing for at least 40 years, and it's been a great tool. The finish on the handle is failing in some places, so your refinishing tips are very welcome. When I bought my hammer it came as a set with a nice Estwing hatchet, also leather stacked. Also a good tool. I think the set cost $20. Thanks. Always a good day when a Scoutcrafter video loads.

Another beautiful job on the hammer. I saw a stacked leather handled hatchet in a display case today. Far cry from $5.00. More like ten times that. I stack washers on the shaft so I can adjust for different thicknesses of wheel. The buffing jacks at Douglas were 6 feet wide. The wheels were 15 inches in diameter. The buffers used a thing like a curry comb for horses to Dress the wheel. One end of the jack had the buffer. The other had a 2" wide sanding belt. I don't remember exactly but it was around an 8 foot long belt.

Here is one for you.. an old time hair gel that they unfortunately don't make anymore called Score. Don't know if you remember it but I was in love with that smell since I was a little kid.. my Grandfather used to use it to slick his hair back and being a gel it would get in his car on the head rest.. anyway it was better then the "new car smell":to me as a kid growing up. Love the hammer resto today as well.. you do find great deals on tools.. and I really liked the way you went over the buffing wheel maintenance and such... yes I know you have showed it before but reminders and refreshers are always nice to see.

I have a good "old fashioned" barber like that and he uses that stuff too LOL. It really does bring back memories as a kid. This guy does a great job too and he still uses a straight razor. I consider a trip to my barber as a trip to my spa 😄
I remember my Dad taking me to get my hair cut and his and yes they mused that exact same stuff and I did love it. That is when they used a straight Razor around your ears (whitewalls they called it here) and your neck. It felt and smelt awesome and so cool on the shaved part of your neck and they went right around even your ears. You and I I believe are the same age from recalling a reply you gave me on a previous Comment I let you because we were Both in The Marine Corps back in the 80's. But yes that stuff was awesome. I just remember calling it toilet water. Because I am guessing it is French writing on the bottle and I could remember reading like Toilett De water or something similar to that. Been so long since I've been to a barber I can't remember anything else but the Clubman product and the powder in the brush as he slapped the back of my neck. I think I still have my old bottle of Obsession but you're right the colognes and hair gels/sprays/mousse were big in the 80's, like the hair. Great tip on the paper bushing! The weather here has been great lately, hasn't it!
I found this exact same hammer on the road a few weeks ago. It had not been "run over" too many times because the steel part was still in good (in damaged) condition; however, the handle was really unraveled and screwed up.
Remember that smell. We had a family friend that was our barber. We would go to his shop down town always enjoyed it. The smells still make me go there. Wish I still could although not much to cut now. You still amaze me with that flap disc. I am going to try your idea on wearing out a flap disc. My son has been looking for a piece of rail to use for a anvil but they go for crazy prices at auctions around here. We got lucky over the weekend and he got a 18 inch piece for 7 dollars. That's pretty good for here. So going to try your idea to use the disc on it first. Stay safe and healthy my friend. Thanks
When I made knives I always had a roll of plumber's cloth , you can rip it to width the entire length you want , and it's strong for fast sanding. And rosin cloth , not sure if you can get that anymore.
What a great job on that beautiful hammer it came out superbly and wow I can’t believe you like that clubman stuff too I have been using it for years now on and off but especially because my father always used it too and I just actually opened up a bottle of clubman lime sec that I ordered on Amazon a couple of weeks ago because I haven’t tried that scent before but it’s still very similar to that barber shop smell and I love it too lol! Barbers were always doing odd things right at the end, I remember they'd take that brush loaded with powder and smack you in the back of the neck with that too..........I have an Estwing Drilling Hammer, great hammer but the guy that ground the forge lines must have been on the Wacky Tobacky that day, I've since fixed it many years ago.......Dremel with a Flap Sanding Wheel is great for getting into some of those tight areas on a hammer.

And we had our own Lilac Vegetal. We called it Triple Cologne. I can't smell Lilac, but judging by the description on the Internet, it should smell almost the same as our Triple. And it was applied in the same way on the neck. And women hated him...

They say that odors can trigger many memories, and that’s one for me. Also; over here in my part of Ohio... we say mish-MASH. Same but different! Keep up the great work sir!

Man! I had just about forgotten about all that Jeris, Vitalis, Brylcreem, Groom & Clean, etc. You remember "Hai Karate"? Smelled so good you needed karate lessons to beat the women off (at least that's what the ads said). My brother and I got on a "Hai Karate Lime" kick when we were young. Smelled like a fruit truck turned over in front of the house. Got many a headache from dousing myself with that swill! Such memories.
I LOVE Estwing hammers! I can't believe you got those nicks out of it. I remember the smell of those barbershop "colognes." The also used to give you the dusting with the talc on the big brush. The good old days.....

Man that stuff and the smell is giving me flashbacks...and great ones at that! My old barber who is long paeed now used it heavy. i remember him trimming around the ears then shaving the neck with a straight razor and then slapping that on! It was a fantastic full barber treatment and I loved it!!!

Help, I missed the detail on your method of removing the remaining stain after removing the rust to allow for that fresh clean steel look. Glad I caught your video, I was just contemplating to either re-lacquer the leather or soak it in neats foot oil -- I like your waxing the handle method. I had a blue handled estwing and I loved it but I ended up switching out for a leather handle estwing framing hammer. I love using it every day and the leather is just so comfortable to hold and also looks good, I need to refinish it at some point since all the paint and clear lacquer chipped away and it's beginning to rust from every day outdoor use. But there's nothing like a leather handled estwing, I'll take it over a stiletto any day
The strangest barber I ever patronized was in India. After the barber finished cutting my hair he began punching my back and massaging my neck. After about five minutes of this, he doused me in rose perfume which, back home, would only be worn by women, but in India it was a status symbol because it meant that I had enough money to visit the barber. Next time I restore a tool with a leather handle I will shave the leather down and anoint it with Lilac Vegetal.
John, Take it from a person that does many many restorations...... you MUST get a Foredom Electric Moto-tool (not a Chinese knock off either). A Dremel is not even close and the quick changing of the Hand Sets are especially nice as is the heavy weigh metal variable speed foot pedal. Some of the models of Hand Tools will accept 1/4" diameter bits, brushes, etc - and since it is so much more powerful than a Dremel it has no problem powering through big restoration jobs. Unfortunately I jerked around with Dremel after Dremel for 40 years but about a year ago when my 8th Dremel gave up the ghost, I bought the Foredom - now I am royally pissed that I waited so damned long!!! I am actually surprised that you don;t already own one!
We had a Estwing hammer just like yours with the leather handle. Just after typing that first sentence I went out to see if I had some with the blue handles. I remember a rock hammer I had from Estwing. But I also found a larger (over two pounds) framing hammer from Estwing with the blue handle and its face is crosshatched. But the big surprise is that I found the old one with the leather handle. I didn't think I had it. It must have walked away with me a few years ago. The handle is solid. So I'm going to bring it back to like new condition.

I have that same Hamme and I absolutely loved it the best Hammer ever. You did a great job restoring it. I also purchased some Clubman After Shave. That's what my barber used when I was a kid.
In the old west at the barber/ dentist, Lilac water was an extra 10 cents. There was also a hair tonic made by Wild root. My favorite cologne was Hai Karate, came with self-defense instructions if the ladies got too frisky. What a gimmick! I had a bad experience with English Leather. Now when I get a whiff, I almost gag. When I was in the Army I grew a handlebar moustache. Pinaud made an excellent moustache wax. That stuff has been around for 150 years. My favorite scent nowadays a dab of Marvel Mystery Oil behind the earlobe. Gun oil will do in a pinch.
I love the Pinaud products. Not a fan of the Lilac Vegetal, I use the Lime Sec or Clubman. Back in the 70s I always used Jovan Musk. Lol. And now I know how to restore my Estwing leather handle! Thanks!

Yes Dave! The buffing wheel dresser looks exactly like a curry comb! I found a hand saw makes a decent improvised alternative. =D

Here is one for you.. an old time hair gel that they unfortunately don't make anymore called Score. Don't know if you remember it but I was in love with that smell since I was a little kid.. my Grandfather used to use it to slick his hair back and being a gel it would get in his car on the head rest.. anyway it was better then the "new car smell":to me as a kid growing up.
Love the hammer resto today as well.. you do find great deals on tools.. and I really liked the way you went over the buffing wheel maintenance and such... yes I know you have showed it before but reminders and refreshers are always nice to see.
In my shop the barber used Wildroot, it was a liquid that would slick down all the hairs he missed! -=D

Joe- Lilac Vegital is like coffee an acquired taste, if he never smelt it before he will most likely think it's a gag gift! LOL Old Spice on the other hand is never a bad gift! =D

I have a good "old fashioned" barber like that and he uses that stuff too LOL. It really does bring back memories as a kid. This guy does a great job too and he still uses a straight razor. I consider a trip to my barber as a trip to my spa 😄
I remember my Dad taking me to get my hair cut and his and yes they mused that exact same stuff and I did love it. That is when they used a straight Razor around your ears (whitewalls they called it here) and your neck. It felt and smelt awesome and so cool on the shaved part of your neck and they went right around even your ears. You and I I believe are the same age from recalling a reply you gave me on a previous Comment I let you because we were Both in The Marine Corps back in the 80's. But yes that stuff was awesome. I just remember calling it toilet water. Because I am guessing it is French writing on the bottle and I could remember reading like Toilett De water or something similar to that. Wow! Beautiful work on that Estwing, especially the leather handle!! Been so long since I've been to a barber I can't remember anything else but the Clubman product and the powder in the brush as he slapped the back of my neck. I think I still have my old bottle of Obsession but you're right the colognes and hair gels/sprays/mousse were big in the 80's, like the hair. Great tip on the paper bushing!

I found this exact same hammer on the road a few weeks ago. It had not been "run over" too many times because the steel part was still in good (in damaged) condition; however, the handle was really unraveled and screwed up.
Remember that smell. We had a family friend that was our barber. We would go to his shop down town always enjoyed it. The smells still make me go there. Wish I still could although not much to cut now. You still amaze me with that flap disc. I am going to try your idea on wearing out a flap disc. My son has been looking for a piece of rail to use for a anvil but they go for crazy prices at auctions around here. We got lucky over the weekend and he got a 18 inch piece for 7 dollars. That's pretty good for here. So going to try your idea to use the disc on it first. Stay safe and healthy my friend. Thanks

When I made knives I always had a roll of plumber's cloth , you can rip it to width the entire length you want , and it's strong for fast sanding. And rosin cloth , not sure if you can get that anymore.
What a great job on that beautiful hammer it came out superbly and wow I can’t believe you like that clubman stuff too I have been using it for years now on and off but especially because my father always used it too and I just actually opened up a bottle of clubman lime sec that I ordered on Amazon a couple of weeks ago because I haven’t tried that scent before but it’s still very similar to that barber shop smell and I love it too lol!

Barbers were always doing odd things right at the end, I remember they'd take that brush loaded with powder and smack you in the back of the neck with that too..........I have an Estwing Drilling Hammer, great hammer but the guy that ground the forge lines must have been on the Wacky Tobacky that day, I've since fixed it many years ago.......Dremel with a Flap Sanding Wheel is great for getting into some of those tight areas on a hammer.

And we had our own Lilac Vegetal. We called it Triple Cologne. I can't smell Lilac, but judging by the description on the Internet, it should smell almost the same as our Triple. And it was applied in the same way on the neck. And women hated him...

I remember the smell. Barber shops all had the same smell. I didn’t think it was bad. It was just distinct. I still think of my dad when I smell Wild Country. Love it. And Aqua Velva was great

Excellent job as always Scout. The barbershop lotions reminded me of my uncles who had a two chair Berber shop in my hometown. They started it after coming home from WWII. They say that odors can trigger many memories, and that’s one for me.

Man! I had just about forgotten about all that Jeris, Vitalis, Brylcreem, Groom & Clean, etc. You remember "Hai Karate"? Smelled so good you needed karate lessons to beat the women off (at least that's what the ads said). My brother and I got on a "Hai Karate Lime" kick when we were young. Smelled like a fruit truck turned over in front of the house. Got many a headache from dousing myself with that swill! Such memories.

I LOVE Estwing hammers! I can't believe you got those nicks out of it. I remember the smell of those barbershop "colognes." The also used to give you the dusting with the talc on the big brush. The good old days.....

Man that stuff and the smell is giving me flashbacks...and great ones at that! My old barber who is long paeed now used it heavy. i remember him trimming around the ears then shaving the neck with a straight razor and then slapping that on! It was a fantastic full barber treatment and I loved it!!!

Help, I missed the detail on your method of removing the remaining stain after removing the rust to allow for that fresh clean steel look. Glad I caught your video, I was just contemplating to either re-lacquer the leather or soak it in neats foot oil -- I like your waxing the handle method.

I had a blue handled estwing and I loved it but I ended up switching out for a leather handle estwing framing hammer. I love using it every day and the leather is just so comfortable to hold and also looks good, I need to refinish it at some point since all the paint and clear lacquer chipped away and it's beginning to rust from every day outdoor use. But there's nothing like a leather handled estwing, I'll take it over a stiletto any day
The strangest barber I ever patronized was in India. After the barber finished cutting my hair he began punching my back and massaging my neck. After about five minutes of this, he doused me in rose perfume which, back home, would only be worn by women, but in India it was a status symbol because it meant that I had enough money to visit the barber. Next time I restore a tool with a leather handle I will shave the leather down and anoint it with Lilac Vegetal.

John, Take it from a person that does many many restorations...... you MUST get a Foredom Electric Moto-tool (not a Chinese knock off either). A Dremel is not even close and the quick changing of the Hand Sets are especially nice as is the heavy weigh metal variable speed foot pedal. Some of the models of Hand Tools will accept 1/4" diameter bits, brushes, etc - and since it is so much more powerful than a Dremel it has no problem powering through big restoration jobs. Unfortunately I jerked around with Dremel after Dremel for 40 years but about a year ago when my 8th Dremel gave up the ghost, I bought the Foredom - now I am royally pissed that I waited so damned long!!! I am actually surprised that you don;t already own one!

We had a Estwing hammer just like yours with the leather handle. Just after typing that first sentence I went out to see if I had some with the blue handles. I remember a rock hammer I had from Estwing. But I also found a larger (over two pounds) framing hammer from Estwing with the blue handle and its face is crosshatched. But the big surprise is that I found the old one with the leather handle. I didn't think I had it. It must have walked away with me a few years ago. The handle is solid. So I'm going to bring it back to like new condition.
Kathie- The Blue handles are really durable and shock absorbing to a point. The stacked leather looks classic but do have issues. 😃👍

In the old west at the barber/ dentist, Lilac water was an extra 10 cents.

My favorite cologne was Hai Karate, came with self-defense instructions if the ladies got too frisky. What a gimmick!
I had a bad experience with English Leather. Now when I get a whiff, I almost gag.
When I was in the Army I grew a handlebar moustache. Pinaud made an excellent moustache wax. That stuff has been around for 150 years.
My favorite scent nowadays a dab of Marvel Mystery Oil behind the earlobe.
Gun oil will do in a pinch.

I love the Pinaud products. Not a fan of the Lilac Vegetal, I use the Lime Sec or Clubman. Back in the 70s I always used Jovan Musk. Lol. And now I know how to restore my Estwing leather handle! Thanks!
