I really like Estwing leather handle hammers. I bought a new one because of your videos. I didn’t have access to an old one to refurbish, just enjoy your videos of restoration of them.
Another great video Scout. Here in Australia the tan was considered healthy and something to be proud of. Although I was born in England I came to Australia when I was three but I was very lucky to inherit a gene that allowed me to tan easily and rarely burn. Not so my my English friend because he was pastie white and covered in freckles and always had to wear a shirt and hat, even while swimming, because he would go from white to burnt and back to white again. Sun lamps! I remember them! Sun block! Yep! Nothing better than smelling like a coconut cream pie! Try to wash it off! Fughetabotit! A close second was 6-12 insect repellent ! Remember that stuff ! It was like using RAID as after shave! Great job on that hammer!
Great job on that beautiful hammer and my memories of sun lamps were at most of the motels that I would stay with my parents on vacation I remember the wall timers that would turn them on and hear the mechanical ticking sound 😂

Hearing you talk about baking on the beach and seeing you red from the sunlamp reminded me of a really dumb thing I did back when I was around 20 (of course it involved a girl). I called in to the job I had at the time faking being sick, the one and only time I ever did that, so that I could hang out with this girl I really liked. Turns out she wanted to go to the beach. So we spent the day there , had a great time, and she even asked me to rub suntan lotion on her (yes I can still smell it). Of course I ended up going into work the next day as red as a lobster. It was pretty obvious where I had been and that I hadn’t been sick, but amazingly I didn’t get fired.

Growing up in the 60's I would get burnt to a crisp I eventually got smarter and kept my shirt on. I may be seeing something on the hammer that's not there but on one side the line on the head that meets the handle looks angled and the other side appears to ground straight 😳
I did a hammer like yours earlier this year. If I remember I looked up one of your videos about the hammer handle. I cleaned it and rubbed a lot of wax in it. The wax does wonders for restoration. I just finished cutting the yard. 2 1/2 hours on the lawn mower. I go from off white to brown in the summer. I don’t like sun block either but I use it when I’m fishing in the boat. Sun and water makes for good burns. Thank you

Thank you for the recent fan advice. The superfluxcapicator is wired correctly. Giving the blade a small clockwise push before hitting the start button is saving my flea market fan from the trash pile. I have burnt the tops of my ears so badly blood will run down them. Great video, as always. What kind of maniac does not have a collection of sun lamps in the attic.
What a great video! really brought back memories of getting burned to a crisp on the first day of summer vacation, the pungent aroma of Noxzema. My brothers and I never seemed to learn as we'd do the same next summer! Also loved the Estwing hammer cleanup. My grandfather was a Baptist minister and full time carpenter who built many houses from the ground up. My most vivid memory of him was in his painters bib overalls with his leather handled Estwing in the loop. I loved that hammer. He carried it for as long as I can remember. I now have seven Estwings with both leather and rubber handles. Love 'em all. Thanks for the memories!
I have both a 16oz and a 20oz leather handle Estwing hammer. I also have a hatchet. The hammers I used during my years of finish carpentry, especially the 16 oz. I often used them in building custom made stairs.
John, really great job on this hammer. Love the way the leather turned out. BTW We also used baby oil when we laid out in the sun, but we also added Iodine to the baby oil. I guess it stained you into a tan. Ha
As a teenager I used to climb onto our flattop garage roof and spread a large towel and lie there “getting some rays”. Would turn over at the sound of the church bells every quarter hour for about 2 hours. Just trying to look good for the girls. The girls would use baby oil mixed with iodine. Boy they looked real good. Anyway, I was too skinny and nerdy (even though we didn’t have the term nerd back then) and most of them wouldn’t give me the time of day! About 5 years ago my daughter the doctor kept telling me to “get that mole taken off your nostril”. I did about 3 years ago. Sure enough it was basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and they removed a good chunk of my nostril and had to graft some skin to fill the hole. Like bondo. These days I try to get sun (vitamin D3) but keep a large brim hat on when working in the garden. Hammer came out very well. Sorry for rambling but you brought out some memories.
Tony- The Baby Oil and iodine was a great mix- it would make you darker so the rays would not bounce off your skin. You always had to shake the bottle because it would separate. 😂👍
Back in the very early 60s we had some sort of sunlamp. I cannot remember anything about the actual lamp and I never used it but I cannot forget the eye goggles. Two little shaped cups on elastic line with typical, tiny green plastic lenses. I liked wearing them because the vision block was sort of cool. Talk about tunnel vision!
God forgive me for saying this but that leather handle has a nice patina look. Back when I was in high school they would let us out to sit or lay in the sun on the football field in May. Of course by then I was already on my way to my uearly farmer tan. Today, I don't wear T shirts for working outside. I get old cotton shirts and cut the sleeves out of them. When they go bad, off to a thrift store to get so more. We use to say girls had a healthy look when they had a good tan. As for sun block, you might as well smear STP or engine honey on your skin. I didn't use it in Arizona, just a long sleeve shirt and a large brimmed hat.
That was a right of passage when I was a kid. At the start of summer vacation everyone got a good shot of sunburn. Then we went around slapping each other on the backs. All summer long all the boys wore only a pair of cut-offs and sneakers. We all went to the city swimming pools and had a blast. The snack bar had asphalt in front. You about burned the soles of your feet. Finally they installed sprinklers to keep the black asphalt cool enough to stand on. Back in 1995 I had a melanoma removed from my back, and I never went shirtless again. The scar looked like a gunshot wound. Quite ugly.
Many years ago I decided to try a infa-red lamp for my bad back. I didn't have much money at the tme and ran across one in a second-hand store within my budget. I read the instructions, set myself up on a camping mattress with some pillows, and a good book. Full of great expectations I turned it on, and click the bulb blew.
I never did get an Estwing but I don't use the Stanley so I don't guess I need an Estwing. YEARS ago I had tendonitis/gout in my left wrist so I drug out what I thought was a c;lamp on heat lamp and put it maybe 4 inches away from the affected joint. It had a blue-ish glow and me working outside and staying as brown as a nut had never known anything about a tanning bed. You guessed it. The fixture had a tanning bulb in it. Kids allo around me in that mess. I woke up about 3 in the morning and my left SIDE was a total BLISTER. It went down but it sure was interesting for a while. Happy rest of the week and God Bless! I went in the Army in winter and never got any sunblock. 10/4 on the windmills though!
Good stuff Bud!! Ya brought back some fond memories when I was a kid walking the Wildwood Boardwalk at night like a Zombie because I was burnt to a crisp, red as a lobster with blisters across the top of my shoulders and tops of my feet!! Nothing like a good dose of Sun Poisoning eh!!☻
I’m a red head Scout. If I tan I get cancer 😆 In all seriousness, sunscreen is dermatologist recommended and does save lives. A friend of mine was an avid runner in CA. Never wore sunscreen a day in his life. One day he finds out he has skin cancer and in 6 months he was dead. Left a wife and 2 young kids behind. We aren’t in the 1950s anymore.

Back in the 80's, I was on a framing crew and the 26oz Estwing was standard equipment. I was pulling braces and had a nail stuck in a knot and tried to pry that sucker out with a sideways with no luck. I ended up standing on the handle and snapped it with a bounce. Got a new one from Menards but for some reason, wished I would've kept it.
Love the hammers, I got so sunburnt on a vacation when I was younger that now I still have to wear a shirt when I go outside because I developed an allergy of sorts because I will break out in hives😢or heat rash,great episode! Thanks agin

That hammer looks absolutely great. I seen the 357magdad video and it was just incredible the job he did on his hammer too. 🤓 👍 I would like to see you do a video on rivets and rivet setting tools. I've used rivnuts and pop rivets before which can be purchased anywhere and are relatively inexpensive but have no experience at all with solid or tubular rivets. In a video of yours from not too long ago, you showed a rivet setting tool you made from a c-clamp (I think). I want to fix up an old Kennedy apprentice machinist tool box and I want to use tubular/hollow core rivets and I am having a lot of trouble on finding the exact rivets and the rivet setting tool is crazy expensive. I thought as an alternative I might try to use Chicago screws. I don't want to use blind / pop rivets. Just don't like the look for this application. Any advice you may have is appreciated.

John, I remember when I was a kid we would travel RT. 9 in Jersey. The closer you got to the shore the more Coppertone Billboards you would see. Oh and the smell would sweep across the beach. Good memories.
We used to mix iodine and baby oil. I’m Italian and Greek, so I get pretty dark. Never used sun block. I’m 68 and no skin issues. I found a vendor who sells cloth covered cords. I bought some for restoration projects. Sun lamps. Quite the thing. Nice midweek video.
The hammer cleaned up well. Looks terrific. I can see the tilt. You showed this was a factory intended tilt. I will have to check my own Estwing hammer now. LOL Dave.

I’m on my holiday/vacation right now and the tan story’s did make me laugh. But its not just the tan thing with the young ones today the girls on the beach have pumped up lips, eyelashes like spiders legs,hair extensions, tattoos all over the place and some are bigger on top than I think God intended! Thanks for another great video. I do like the look of the leather handle but have never used one.
I liked the heat, when I was younger despite being quite fair skinned, but I prefer cooler weather now, 68 degrees is plenty, preferably with a light breeze, but the feeling of sun on your skin is good and there a reason for that ! Interesting to see your different approach to Magdad's equally excellent Estwing Resto, "horses for courses" and I'm grateful to have both methods to choose from accordingly !
After years of owning leather stacked tools I realized that any hard finish you apply will eventually crack and peel, the only way to keep those handles usable is the same way we treat our shoes. 😃👍
Never any trouble tanning, first day the town pool was open, get myself a sunburn and the rest of the summer I was brown as toast, never could see the fuss over tanning though.😊 like the work on the Estwing hammer, always liked Estwing products, thanks for the video sir, enjoyed it.
I worked for hawaiian tropic as a kid. I was 15 years old working 7 days a week cleaning pools at hotels that had sun tan lotion booths on their pool decks. That lotion would leave horrible scum line stains on the pool tiles. I never once put on lotion the entire time I worked there....i had a killer tan. Cheers

"Snoop" Abides...my brother's Viet Nam tan BITD (67/68/69/70) and the SS Chevelle bought with his re-up monies together got him "ACTION" in his hometown...as a plumber also BITD when I was given a ESTWING to use in the ditch to scrape compacted dirt never again in this lifetime was I ever w/o one(it was made for it)
The hammer looked like it had pulled too hard on a nail and bent a little. The test for hammers and axes was to put it on a flat surface with the striking edge and the toe of the handle on the surface. That tells you the alignment.
I am not a Estwing fan yet that is a beautiful hammer and good lesson on how to refurbish my leather handled hammers. On tannin. Having lived on St John in the Virgin Islands we often amused when the visitors from up north would not heed good advice as to time in the tropical sun. We had in Lawyer from Boston that received third degree burns. Ginny's Gx2 Grandfather was a plantation owner in Mississippi (and Gov of Mississippi) and all the ladies of "quality" would never be outside without long sleeves and a bonnet. Her grandfather was also the Gov of Mississippi and here grandfather was a Senator from Mississippi and none of those ladies would bee seen without long sleeves and bonnet. good video...stay safe...captjack

Really humorous episode today.. for some reason my tablet was loading very slow.. You were talking about the tanning lamp and you were about to flip the switch and as you flipped the switch the screen on my tablet went completely black and lost all audio... my first response was, How did he do that? After about 5 or 10 seconds it all came back on... if you had anything to do with that, I thought it was a nice touch... Take care and I'll see you Friday....

I recently picked up a ball peen leather hammer and assumed it was Estwing. When I removed the rust on the bottom, I was surprised to see Malco . Found out they also made these.
Back in the Day --- Mom used to bring out the Heat Lamp is me or my Sister got a cold during the winter. It was like a 20 minute stint under it, and yeah those green goggles!! I have an Estwing 16 ounce hammer which has served me well for many years. Your resto looks great. Mine doesnt have an angled head. I wonder if you have a factory error. I never felt the leather disc handles were very cushioning over rubber or plain wood. I wonder if Estwing stays with leather as a corporate identity/marketing move. Still, I really like Estwing tools. You are correct about the power generation windmills. They are also eyesores, and in our area, kill alot of birds.
That Hammer looks fantastic! It is possible to bend the shafts on those. I had a similar style Craftsman, could not set a nail straight for love nor money. I think a coworker swapped me his? Eventually, took back to Sears..."Yup, that's bent. Go get a new one!" Never saw the coworker, but I still use that hammer.
Back in the late 60, early 70 there was a suntan lotion call QT, Quick Tan. It would die your skin orange. A friend of mine in high school tried it was kind of comical. Another one I saw people doing with put some iodine in baby oil and use that as a suntan lotion.

That hammer is totally bent. I noticed it as soon as you put it on the screen. Edited: After watching the show, I went out to the shop and put four Eswings on the bench with a large straightedge and they all were square. They all looked square. But as I rotated them around a bit I could see what we saw in the video. I wonder if it might be the camera lens angle, the lines in the leather, or the difference in the head and claw sides that all create an illusion of angle. Also, what kind of maniac wants the head of a hammer to be angled? You're going to get your fingers smashed when hitting a nail in a board some day?
You talking about the harsh chemicals in sunscreen, we went to the pool the other day and a bottle of sun spray that we had had leaked all into the bag and everything that was plastic melted. And like you said, we put the stuff on our skin.🤦♂️
When I was in high school and college, we used to “accelerate” our tan by laying out slathered in baby oil. Dumb! I have narrowly escaped death from malignant melanoma three times. And have had four other sun-related skin cancers. Bottom line? Ignore advertisers, as they don’t care what happens to you. Listen to your doctor!
The face of woodworking mallets are beveled(angled). This allows the face of the mallet to strike a chisel at 90 degrees. Understand, the striking area on a chisel is not at bench height, thus the mallet needs to be beveled to strike the chisel th deliver the most force easlly.

With the industrial revolution many of the poor got jobs in factories and with the shift to more people working in offices, except for farmers and construction workers, only the rich could waste hours getting a tan, so tans became an emblem of high status.
I just realized, in the last video you talked about making concoctions. You went nearly 50/50 with the paste wax then butchers block wax! Don’t be stingy with that 50/50!
Nice, informative video! Brings up two questions: First, did the wax applications cause the leather to 'tighten up,' and decrease the slightly loose handle you observed at first? Also, I wondered whether an application of oil, like Neatsfoot, would cause the old leather to swell a bit, and tighten up the handle some? What do you think John? Really enjoyed the video!
Hi Larry- I was thinking the same thing! The handle did tighten up slightly but I believe to reconstitute the leather to original size I believe a soak in a thin viscosity oil like neatsfoot oil over night will penetrate in deep and swell the leather, However sometimes it also softens the leather too. It’s not as loose as it was in the beginning and I am happy with the outcome on this one but it would make for a good experiment! 😃👍

Would turn over at the sound of the church bells every quarter hour for about 2 hours. Just trying to look good for the girls. The girls would use baby oil mixed with iodine. Boy they looked real good. Anyway, I was too skinny and nerdy (even though we didn’t have the term nerd back then) and most of them wouldn’t give me the time of day!
About 5 years ago my daughter the doctor kept telling me to “get that mole taken off your nostril”. I did about 3 years ago. Sure enough it was basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and they removed a good chunk of my nostril and had to graft some skin to fill the hole. Like bondo. These days I try to get sun (vitamin D3) but keep a large brim hat on when working in the garden. Hammer came out very well. Sorry for rambling but you brought out some memories.
Tony- The Baby Oil and iodine was a great mix- it would make you darker so the rays would not bounce off your skin. You always had to shake the bottle because it would separate. 😂👍
Back in the very early 60s we had some sort of sunlamp. I cannot remember anything about the actual lamp and I never used it but I cannot forget the eye goggles. Two little shaped cups on elastic line with typical, tiny green plastic lenses. I liked wearing them because the vision block was sort of cool. Talk about tunnel vision!
Coppertone tanning butter, with a Solorcaine chaser when you overdid it. What a combo.

God forgive me for saying this but that leather handle has a nice patina look. Back when I was in high school they would let us out to sit or lay in the sun on the football field in May. Of course by then I was already on my way to my uearly farmer tan. Today, I don't wear T shirts for working outside. I get old cotton shirts and cut the sleeves out of them. When they go bad, off to a thrift store to get so more. We use to say girls had a healthy look when they had a good tan. As for sun block, you might as well smear STP or engine honey on your skin. I didn't use it in Arizona, just a long sleeve shirt and a large brimmed hat.
When we were kids the lifeguards only put Zinc on their noses.

That was a right of passage when I was a kid. At the start of summer vacation everyone got a good shot of sunburn. Then we went around slapping each other on the backs. All summer long all the boys wore only a pair of cut-offs and sneakers. We all went to the city swimming pools and had a blast. The snack bar had asphalt in front. You about burned the soles of your feet. Finally they installed sprinklers to keep the black asphalt cool enough to stand on.
Back in 1995 I had a melanoma removed from my back, and I never went shirtless again. The scar looked like a gunshot wound. Quite ugly.

Many years ago I decided to try a infa-red lamp for my bad back. I didn't have much money at the tme and ran across one in a second-hand store within my budget.
I read the instructions, set myself up on a camping mattress with some pillows, and a good book. Full of great expectations I turned it on, and click the bulb blew.
Great job... Like the old Estwing hammers. Have a few types in leather and rubber handles... Never can pass one up for $2

I never did get an Estwing but I don't use the Stanley so I don't guess I need an Estwing. YEARS ago I had tendonitis/gout in my left wrist so I drug out what I thought was a c;lamp on heat lamp and put it maybe 4 inches away from the affected joint. It had a blue-ish glow and me working outside and staying as brown as a nut had never known anything about a tanning bed. You guessed it. The fixture had a tanning bulb in it. Kids allo around me in that mess. I woke up about 3 in the morning and my left SIDE was a total BLISTER. It went down but it sure was interesting for a while. Happy rest of the week and God Bless! I went in the Army in winter and never got any sunblock. 10/4 on the windmills though!
Good stuff Bud!! Ya brought back some fond memories when I was a kid walking the Wildwood Boardwalk at night like a Zombie because I was burnt to a crisp, red as a lobster with blisters across the top of my shoulders and tops of my feet!! Nothing like a good dose of Sun Poisoning eh!!☻

I’m a red head Scout. If I tan I get cancer 😆 In all seriousness, sunscreen is dermatologist recommended and does save lives. A friend of mine was an avid runner in CA. Never wore sunscreen a day in his life. One day he finds out he has skin cancer and in 6 months he was dead. Left a wife and 2 young kids behind. We aren’t in the 1950s anymore.
I believe covering up is the way to go- loose cotton shirt and wide brim hat. Sunscreen chemicals are another form of impending doom. 😃👍

John as always A+ work, the tilt did show up but it looks like it was always there, I like it.
Back in the 80's, I was on a framing crew and the 26oz Estwing was standard equipment. I was pulling braces and had a nail stuck in a knot and tried to pry that sucker out with a sideways with no luck. I ended up standing on the handle and snapped it with a bounce. Got a new one from Menards but for some reason, wished I would've kept it.

I would like to see you do a video on rivets and rivet setting tools. I've used rivnuts and pop rivets before which can be purchased anywhere and are relatively inexpensive but have no experience at all with solid or tubular rivets. In a video of yours from not too long ago, you showed a rivet setting tool you made from a c-clamp (I think). I want to fix up an old Kennedy apprentice machinist tool box and I want to use tubular/hollow core rivets and I am having a lot of trouble on finding the exact rivets and the rivet setting tool is crazy expensive. I thought as an alternative I might try to use Chicago screws. I don't want to use blind / pop rivets. Just don't like the look for this application. Any advice you may have is appreciated.

John, I remember when I was a kid we would travel RT. 9 in Jersey. The closer you got to the shore the more Coppertone Billboards you would see. Oh and the smell would sweep across the beach. Good memories.

We used to mix iodine and baby oil. I’m Italian and Greek, so I get pretty dark. Never used sun block. I’m 68 and no skin issues. I found a vendor who sells cloth covered cords. I bought some for restoration projects. Sun lamps. Quite the thing. Nice midweek video.

I have the same Sperti lamp and I'm saying just hold the switch for a few seconds and it'll come on.........Lucile (Joy Harmon) later became famous for her baking ~ "Aunt Joy's Cakes" which is still in business today.

I’m on my holiday/vacation right now and the tan story’s did make me laugh. But its not just the tan thing with the young ones today the girls on the beach have pumped up lips, eyelashes like spiders legs,hair extensions, tattoos all over the place and some are bigger on top than I think God intended! Thanks for another great video. I do like the look of the leather handle but have never used one.
I liked the heat, when I was younger despite being quite fair skinned, but I prefer cooler weather now, 68 degrees is plenty, preferably with a light breeze, but the feeling of sun on your skin is good and there a reason for that !

After years of owning leather stacked tools I realized that any hard finish you apply will eventually crack and peel, the only way to keep those handles usable is the same way we treat our shoes. 😃👍

Never any trouble tanning, first day the town pool was open, get myself a sunburn and the rest of the summer I was brown as toast, never could see the fuss over tanning though.😊 like the work on the Estwing hammer, always liked Estwing products, thanks for the video sir, enjoyed it.
I worked for hawaiian tropic as a kid. I was 15 years old working 7 days a week cleaning pools at hotels that had sun tan lotion booths on their pool decks. That lotion would leave horrible scum line stains on the pool tiles. I never once put on lotion the entire time I worked there....i had a killer tan. Cheers

"Snoop" Abides...my brother's Viet Nam tan BITD (67/68/69/70) and the SS Chevelle bought with his re-up monies together got him "ACTION" in his hometown...as a plumber also BITD when I was given a ESTWING to use in the ditch to scrape compacted dirt never again in this lifetime was I ever w/o one(it was made for it)
The hammer looked like it had pulled too hard on a nail and bent a little. The test for hammers and axes was to put it on a flat surface with the striking edge and the toe of the handle on the surface. That tells you the alignment.
Boy that hammer looks great! I love leather or wood handles on tools. Great job, should make a good user for years.
I am not a Estwing fan yet that is a beautiful hammer and good lesson on how to refurbish my leather handled hammers. On tannin. Having lived on St John in the Virgin Islands we often amused when the visitors from up north would not heed good advice as to time in the tropical sun. We had in Lawyer from Boston that received third degree burns. Ginny's Gx2 Grandfather was a plantation owner in Mississippi (and Gov of Mississippi) and all the ladies of "quality" would never be outside without long sleeves and a bonnet. Her grandfather was also the Gov of Mississippi and here grandfather was a Senator from Mississippi and none of those ladies would bee seen without long sleeves and bonnet. good video...stay safe...captjack

Really humorous episode today.. for some reason my tablet was loading very slow.. You were talking about the tanning lamp and you were about to flip the switch and as you flipped the switch the screen on my tablet went completely black and lost all audio... my first response was, How did he do that? After about 5 or 10 seconds it all came back on... if you had anything to do with that, I thought it was a nice touch... Take care and I'll see you Friday....

I recently picked up a ball peen leather hammer and assumed it was Estwing. When I removed the rust on the bottom, I was surprised to see Malco . Found out they also made these.
A few companies made leather stacked tools, also some companies had other manufacturers make a run for them. 😃👍
Back in the Day --- Mom used to bring out the Heat Lamp is me or my Sister got a cold during the winter. It was like a 20 minute stint under it, and yeah those green goggles!! We had to take turns because there was only one set.

I have an Estwing 16 ounce hammer which has served me well for many years. Your resto looks great. Mine doesnt have an angled head. I wonder if you have a factory error. I never felt the leather disc handles were very cushioning over rubber or plain wood. I wonder if Estwing stays with leather as a corporate identity/marketing move. Still, I really like Estwing tools. You are correct about the power generation windmills. They are also eyesores, and in our area, kill alot of birds.
That Hammer looks fantastic! It is possible to bend the shafts on those. I had a similar style Craftsman, could not set a nail straight for love nor money. I think a coworker swapped me his? Eventually, took back to Sears..."Yup, that's bent. Go get a new one!" Never saw the coworker, but I still use that hammer.

My 12 oz Estwing claw hammer also has a slightly tilted head.
Back in the late 60, early 70 there was a suntan lotion call QT, Quick Tan. It would die your skin orange. A friend of mine in high school tried it was kind of comical. Another one I saw people doing with put some iodine in baby oil and use that as a suntan lotion.

After watching the show, I went out to the shop and put four Eswings on the bench with a large straightedge and they all were square. They all looked square. But as I rotated them around a bit I could see what we saw in the video. I wonder if it might be the camera lens angle, the lines in the leather, or the difference in the head and claw sides that all create an illusion of angle.
Also, what kind of maniac wants the head of a hammer to be angled? You're going to get your fingers smashed when hitting a nail in a board some day?

You talking about the harsh chemicals in sunscreen, we went to the pool the other day and a bottle of sun spray that we had had leaked all into the bag and everything that was plastic melted. And like you said, we put the stuff on our skin.🤦♂️

When I was in high school and college, we used to “accelerate” our tan by laying out slathered in baby oil. Dumb! I have narrowly escaped death from malignant melanoma three times. And have had four other sun-related skin cancers. Bottom line? Ignore advertisers, as they don’t care what happens to you. Listen to your doctor!
The face of woodworking mallets are beveled(angled). This allows the face of the mallet to strike a chisel at 90 degrees. Understand, the striking area on a chisel is not at bench height, thus the mallet needs to be beveled to strike the chisel th deliver the most force easlly.

For most of history the poor worked outdoors so not having a tan was a sign of wealth. With the industrial revolution many of the poor got jobs in factories and with the shift to more people working in offices, except for farmers and construction workers, only the rich could waste hours getting a tan, so tans became an emblem of high status.

You went nearly 50/50 with the paste wax then butchers block wax!

Nice, informative video! Brings up two questions: First, did the wax applications cause the leather to 'tighten up,' and decrease the slightly loose handle you observed at first? Also, I wondered whether an application of oil, like Neatsfoot, would cause the old leather to swell a bit, and tighten up the handle some? What do you think John?

Hi Larry- I was thinking the same thing! The handle did tighten up slightly but I believe to reconstitute the leather to original size I believe a soak in a thin viscosity oil like neatsfoot oil over night will penetrate in deep and swell the leather, However sometimes it also softens the leather too. It’s not as loose as it was in the beginning and I am happy with the outcome on this one but it would make for a good experiment! 😃👍
