The other more obscure port to DS from the G-Net was Turn It Around (Mawasunda) I imagine it's a lot more fun in the arcade with the proprietary controller. Simulating the crank with a stylus isn't very satisfying

My favorite games for this machine are Kollon and Otenki Kororin, they both perfect the Panel de Pon formula in different ways. And Zooo is great too, but it's even better on PS2 and GBA (that soundtrack 🔥)

The "Enjoy" on death in Night Raids got a decent chuckle out of me. I could see myself angrily feeding quarters into that cab late game just because of that message 😂
My Gnet is my pride and joy, have the mod bios and every game on a CF card with artwork (35 i think, including ported games). Chaos Heat is super fun, so many shooters too. Sonic Wings and Aero Fighters ❤Make sure to pick up the stereo audio mod from Everten on Tindie too.
People are actually modding off the shelf RC controllers now, and it's apparently fairly simple to get them running on the G-Net motherboard, so that was likely what Taito did back during R&D for the game
I love me some Homeconsole based Arcade boards always super interesting to see what changed and what hardware they used ( Didnt think an arcadeboard ever came with a compact flash card lol )
Great vid! Personally, it's a bit hard to go back to playing the OG versions of Psyvariar Medium Unit/Revision & XII Stage since both of their Steam ports have built in autofire for important mechanics ( the roll button in Psyvariar's case, and the twirling ship motion that shots out side shots with a multipler in xii stag) and it helps a lot for serious runs.
True. But in some ways the OG version is still the most challenging and pure experience. But honestly however anyone wants to play it is cool with me :)
love this sort of retrospective on lesser-known platforms :) i do think you should be able to play the two shanghai games, though; while they use mahjong tiles, they’re just mahjong solitaire games, y’know, the match-2 game that used to come on windows x)
Before we had Bejeweled we had Zooo. This game was so amazing but it was mostly unplayable on the Gameboy Advance and PS2 as you had to use the D-PAD to navigate. The best version of Zooo was on the Nintendo DS as the stylus was perfect for Zooo! 😎
This was such a cool video. I absolutely adore the "upgraded PS1 look." I kind of like the stock retail look PS1 look but it's a little toooo ugly most of the time. G-Net really hits the sweet spot for me.
Psyvariar Revision is such a great vertical shmup! When you level up, you're invincible for about 1/2 sec - Whilst invincible, you need to crash (and graze) into as many enemies and bullets as possible to quickly level up even faster! If you keep doing this, it will seem like you're invincible as you level up, quickly!! 👍
after watching your video I ended up purchasing a board from japan, comes with a shanghai game but no super cap board.... all those ones with the super cap board were like $500 more. Have you tried turn it around, it's I think the only spinner game? Looks like mostly a mini game comp but seeing arkanoid and cameltry in there looks interesting. I believe it had a DS port but using the stylus didn't translate well. maybe RC dego, I didn't see a jumper switch for spinners like the F3 so I am assuming mapped to left/right. Looks like the space invaders anniversary has a couple versions of space invaders I haven't played before. I assume the version of zoo is the same standalone as included on Otenami Haiken Final?

Doesn't matter how good those games are, home console hardware based boards like this killed the arcades. Why would anyone take the time to go to the arcades and waste credits for games that look exactly like the ones they play at home?
It meant we got a lot more games. Not every game could afford to be on System 22 / Model 2 or 3. Lower spec’s but still better “than home” was important
It meant we got a lot more games nobody cared about. The whole point of the arcades was to be the state of the art. And sure, having a few PS1 games in between the Model 2 or 3 was fine, but when console based hardware became the standard, it was the beginning of the end for Arcades and this isn't a coincidence.
What do you mean spicy? I'm not rude or anything. Anyway, PC hardware was simply the final blow but arcades were in decline long before that. After the PS2 was released, reaching 100% parity with every possible Arcade hardware, nobody cared about the arcades outside Japan anymore.
Lol spicy doesn’t mean rude. It just means “passioned”. I just don’t see it the same way. Once PC parts started showing up in arcade platforms vs bespoke custom chips it was all over. You have Konami with 3DFX and PowerPC in the mid to late 90s, Atari/Midway with PC 3D accelerator chips…everyone realized why go to the expense of designing custom hardware when an off the shelf processor and some 3D chips that were in use at home could get near to the same result with 10% of the R&D costs.
Zooo was later ported to the Nintendo DS under the title Zoo Keeper, and is equally fun there
