Hi. It's a common misconception that certain ways of speaking or being articulate are exclusive to specific cultures or regions. The interviewee explained that his grandfather encouraged him from a young age to engage with reading and vocabulary, which naturally expanded his linguistic abilities. An individual’s environment and influences can significantly shape their communication style. Articulation and an extensive vocabulary come from a dedication to learning, not simply from growing up in any one place. It’s important to recognise that cultural diversity in speech exists globally, and an accent or way of speaking isn’t confined to a single culture.
😂😂😂🙈I have a nephew who talks like him me being an old woman I always say to him "please stop being British wena talk properly" He laughed at me and say it's your fault you took us to these schools 😂🙈love him so much 😜
I don't know this gent neh, I do understand him explaining the accent but yoh haiyi this accent is throwing me off especially cos his explanation of how it came about. Mina i also grew up in a household where we were always made to read, my father bought us books and forced us to read. And I also learned my English from watching TV because we were the only house in the community to own a TV first in my neighborhood - black and white days. I do have a bit of a model C accent yet I didn't go to model C schools at all, ngifunde e Kasi and was top in English class and debates etc. Its just odd to be sounding "American" (not even South African Caucasian) when you grew up in SA and around South Africans all your life. Kanti yazi sometimes its okay to say, "I taught myself this accent because it's what i prefer and have gotten used to," but no ways that a local person of colour can just get an accent from watching TV and reading newspapers and attending an English school. Also, having an accent does not automatically mean you are "articulate and intelligent". This man is "well spoken". He expressed himself like a normal person speaking basic English. I heard nothing profound mina personally or e.g when Msaki (the musician) speaks, she is articulate. That is being articulate. Having an accent doesn't mean your English is top tier. As black people we need to stop glamourizing things that are not a flex. Either than that, Lungelo did a great job here as usual.
@@TheRealZeeNkosi Hi there. I appreciate your perspective and respect your experience of growing up with books and learning from your environment. However, it’s worth clarifying a few things. Firstly, no one in the interview suggested that having an accent equates to being intelligent or articulate. The interviewee was described as articulate because he spoke clearly and effectively, which is the true meaning of the term. His accent is simply a byproduct of his influences, which he shared honestly. Accent doesn’t determine a person’s intelligence or value; it’s just part of their unique communication style. Secondly, it’s disheartening to see the assumption that black people who speak well are somehow “glamourising” accents. The interviewee was simply expressing himself in the way he’s most comfortable, with the vocabulary and accent he’s grown accustomed to. It’s common for accents to develop based on a range of influences, like family, media, and personal interest, and there’s no need to dismiss someone’s way of speaking because it doesn’t fit our expectations of what a black person “should” sound like. Lastly, I think it’s important to remember that a person’s manner of speech or accent is not a “flex" indeed. It’s simply one part of how they communicate, shaped by their background and experiences. The interview focused on his responses and insights, not on his accent. This conversation could perhaps be more productive if we placed less emphasis on how a person sounds and more on what they have to say hence you feel that "Nothing profound" was said.
