    We need to remember that the first step in reduce, reuse, recycle is REDUCE! You don't need the latest iPhone or 5 TVs in your house. Minimizing your consumption of electronic products doesn't fix the problem, but it can certainly contribute to its solution.

    Some of the price of electronic goods should be paid as a tax for the disposal of this waste and none of it should be shipped overseas, if it is your country's waste it is your problem.
    This documentary is a real eye opener for people in wealthier countries who have a better lifestyle and think there is no other cost attached to that. The desperate existence of these people is something we should not be allowed to shrug away.

      E-waste goes there, nuclear waste comes here. The problem isn't about waste, it's about the very professional criminal gang similar to the Mafia that calls itself "Government", which creates Capos called "corporations", who make these deals for you and then they enforce their will with their Soldiers, which they call "Police".
      And then they get you to pay for it all... the only difference between the Mafia and State is that the Mafia doesn't have a twelve year indoctrination system to convince you it's not organized crime.

    Keep in mind that the video was made in 2002. China was a minor player in the computer industry at the time, so it wasn't really a matter of "sending the computers back". A lot has changed since then. Now, China is reducing the imports and eventually aims to reach zero waste imports by 2020.

    • @BenjiSun
      @BenjiSun 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      and instead, a lot of the e-waste and plastic waste that China has since banned in 2018, are now going to other less developed nations like Indonesia and dumping it in poorer villages piled up like scenes from Wall-E. Out of sight, out of mind from consumers.

    Not surprised they're recovering solder; which is a mixture of lead and tin. Tin, contrary to popular misconception, is a rather scarce and expensive metal. Alloyed with copper, it makes bronze. During WW2, 'tin cans' were recycled in the US to recover the tin plate, which was needed to make weapons and line more cans. The steel of the can wasn't that valuable, but at the time most tin came from the Dutch East Indies [now Indonesia] and Japan had cut off access to that. Prior to the war, the government stockpiled tin as a strategic metal.

    There's a new book "Junkyard Planet" which has a chapter on Guiyo. Illegal electronics recycling is big business, and some people who do it are doing better than if they were farmers. The govt. sometimes takes a blind eye to the industry because it needs the taxes. And some of what goes on in Guiyo is recycling. A broker will buy a container of old iPhones for 50 cents each, and some of the phones will have chips that can be sold for $10.

      @TechaxWorld right now I have two vintage Macintosh machines, ones got os 7 and the other is a grey imac g3. The imac was my first computer. On the windows side I've got a Dell Power edge windows server, custom built windows 98 gaming rig, windows 7 lenovo desktop, and two micro windows xp desktops for projects. I used to have a lot more but found that people on ebay love these computers. Aside those units I have two giant shelves loaded with power supplies, motherboards, keyboards, cpu units, ram sticks, and plastic fillers. This is really helpful though because my father has industrial machines at work that rely on very old computers, and sometimes I need to quickly fix them. Other then computers I love old wood grain or wood shelled technology. I have two console TV sets in wood, one is from 1986 and the other from 1948. The 48 needs a lot of work though and does not start. With that I got four tube radios from the mid century. Cant get enough of them but given some are more than half a century old, they are not very reliable.
      Ps you mentioned consoles: I have my original ps3 from the younger years, a xbox 360, and complete NES (which goes very well with the 1986 tv). Fallout is my favorite gaming series, specifically 3 and new vegas. I also play csgo but that's on my desktop

    There is a way to fix this problem, and the current way of "shredding it" NEVER works. There is a different way, but the current mentality is to keep doing this way of business, and this must stop and adopt my ideas. The whole computer must be ACTIVELY recycled all the way, like desoldering the circuit boards through a process by using a Hakko 808 Desoldering gun. When the normal process of shredding occurs in most recycling companies, there is also another problem that those companies overlook, and that is the hazardous material cleanup involved with machines. If you all want to know what my process is, please mail me here on youtube at my channel.

    As at July 2016 123.000 of us have chosen to view and 175 of us have troubled to make a comment on a video that was made in 2002. The research for the draft regulations and international standards was being done 20 years ago when the private consumer of PCs and peripherals hardly existed. What the problem is now in terms of the sheer scale of e-waste now entering the waste stream and of all the damage done over the last quarter of a century beggars belief. Even if the US drags its feet on this issue at least the Chinese are beginning to realise that trashing their country and their health is a shortsighted thing to do. Which leaves plenty of non-functioning states around the world to pick up the slack. A few functioning container gantries in a functioning port is all that is required to connect a new dumping ground with the effluent of the world's affluent. Probably better for people in the west than non-functioning states exporting terrorism. If Mr Obama hasn't nailed it, what are the prospects under, say, Mr Trump?

  • @paulovianez9350
    @paulovianez9350 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I don't agree in anyway with this way of disposing of the e-waste. Most of this waste originates in the manufacturing countries and this includes china. We pay for the proper recycling when we purchase a computer or a phone that comes from china in most cases according to the merchants. The manufacturers have to be responsible for disposing of the equipment manufactured with their brand when new technology is sold in the markets.

    2 - I Believe the world technology data base is so wast at present time that we technologist would be able to create a process plants similar to reverse production factory to resolve this situation.
    3 - For this plant, this time the input instead of raw material would be complex materials ( unlike mining we know exactly what those COMPLEX materials are ! !

    As a resident of california, i love that the west coast of america is hit first by the global wind currents that blow eastward. All that air with China's toxic goodness and we get first dibbs on it. Yay!!
    One problem with this video, WHAT do the chinese people do with the parts they are sorting out, especially the black toner from printer cartridges. that was not mentioned except to say the cartridges wind up in a river. who is buying reclaimed toner? ,who buys it? Is it necessarily fed back to us in other products, what could they possibly do with our nuclear waste, maybe they have a solution to that problem.

    I think computer manufacturers should conceptualize a computer design that can be upgraded up to the latest computer design available. a computer design that is generic in design and can be upgraded. that way e waste can be minimize a bit.

      Such a design would inherently stagnate technology development. You wouldn't ever say such a thing if you had an understanding of the complexities computer manufacturing. If we did this, our computers wouldn't get better as time went on.

    • @samedz3966
      @samedz3966 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brady Rose It doesn't have to stagnate anything. The laptop is designed so it can fit other components in the market. It's all about making technology universal and not a monopoly - e.g. if you have an Apply laptop you are doomed to buy Apply components/parts to replace broken ones.

      If you seriously believe this, I've got to tell you that you know next to nothing about integrated circuit design or board layouts. They'll laugh you off the floor for saying such a naive thing. Diverging tech specifications emerge as a necessity to continually increasing standards. The designs, layouts, and the ways parts interface with each other are a function of the economic viability of the advances themselves, and I don't mean that simply as a manner of money. At some point the ports always are obsoleted as a necessity of the advancement the standards of the boards that hook to them.

    • @samedz3966
      @samedz3966 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brady Rose Yeah the point is that they are designed in a way (not like they are now!) that components can be replaced and repaired in a way that is easier and creates less waste (i.e. the dead components can be salvaged). Change the mentality you have because it's very dated

    They live in unfortunate conditions, but it's their own fault it isn't being disposed of properly. They could design buildings to burn wire with less pollution. Store CRT properly not in the one place you don't want it.

    • @TN-br9yl
      @TN-br9yl 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's their own fault, I agree. However, if they have the money to design those specialized buildings, would they do that for a living? Also, if the "rich" countries can't properly build the infrastructure to take care of these e-waste, how do you suppose the "poor" countries can do this?

    We have all this waste because electronic industry wants us to buy new devices more often than needed. As electrician i can tell you that most of it is made to last only a few years, until warranty expires. Making it last longer doesn't cost much more, often the same! Good example are Macs which can't be upgraded like PCs when new model comes out. We should ban Apple products! Working phone chargers are discarded only because new phones have slighty different connectors. I could go on and on...

    Maybe this solution is a little to simple, instead of spending large amounts of money banning the export of hazardous waist and taking away the jobs in Asia we should instead send equipment to that village and others like it so they can strip down everything much more effectively and safely without polluting their own countryside. No offense but these people look like they need order when it comes to recycling these materials. Only one guy in that whole village was smart enough to put a fan next to him to blow away the fumes so he would not inhale them while extracting the solder.

    • @akindejihill842
      @akindejihill842 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Gabriel Pierce the solution is to send the used products back to the manufacturer and make them extract their own materials for reuse and safely get rid of what they can't recycle. Then they wil start doing a better job of designing this stuff to last longer and easier to recycle

    There is a way to fix that problem, and I have an idea on how to fix it, and I am working on it right now. This problem will I hope be a thing of the past very soon. Check out my video called "Renegade's Computer BP" and you will see. It is a draft presentation, but I am still working on it.The polluted water can be fixed I think. There is a company called molycorp that can fix that problem. Check out their videos here on youtube.
