House got to 84 today. I looked at the thermostat and there was no power. I noticed a red light on near the air handler. I grabbed my shop vac, went outside and sucked the condensate line out. It was filled with a clear gel like substance. 🤮 Found the float switch, cleaned it out, dried it out and waited 5 mins. BAM. I fixed it!!!

Glad you seem honest. A tech came to persons house and tried to talk homeowner into paying $12k to replace the whole upstairs unit, when the evaporator coils was leaking on a two year unit. I kid you not! I told homeowner to get another company to do the warranty work and nothing else!

For the cost of those ECM motors the reliability should be way better than they are. Those brutally hot days are dangerous to your health for sure. Stay hydrated and don’t over exert yourself! Been there done that and it definitely takes a day or so to recover

Curtis, I would change that chisel bit shown in this video to like a 3/8 inch diameter masonry bit so you can get it inside the fan hub and not damage the internal diameter (as has happened in another video).

  • @kuhrd

As I see you working on these sometimes very hot and potentially dangerous days have you considered a phase change vest and a 12v freezer chest for your truck? Each set of inserts that can be recharged by placing in a freezer for 20-30 minutes will last 1-3 hours depending on outside temperatures. Not sure how well this would work for you and the whole setup with buying the vest and extra inserts and a 12v freezer can be a bit pricey, but an electrician friend of mine swears by them for the summer months and he ended up buying them for his whole crew.

    Very professional
Instead of using simple plier you should use hub puller tool for removing blower and
You should keep pieces of metal pipes of different sizes to strike blower back on motor shaft ..

Here's a little free advice for window ac, make sure to clean the filter on time. its important... There's a little light that comes on mine to remind me to clean it 😅. Also i clean both the inside coil and the outside coil at least once a year. (Sometimes 2x a year depending on the hurricanes/weather. Also I clean the little hamper wheel fan once a year with a soft toothbrush (being gentle). Helps keep the old ac cooling 🧊.

Hey Curtis, like always love all your videos, but I have a question. I see that you use the Milwaukee press tool often. What model do you have and where do you buy your fittings?
I just made the big move and bought the press tool, not cheap as you know lol but I was looking for fittings and the ones that I saw said Plumbing so I wanted to know if those were compatible with refrigerant, also I see that you use the filter dryers specifically made for press tools. Where do you get those as well.

Picture it like a glass with ice and a soft drink in it. In the summer it will be dripping with sweat. The ice/frost inside that air handler with nonfunctioning blower will cause the metal envelope to sweat lots when there is no blower motor. Once the system starts moving air again, the outside moisture will reduce, similar to an insulated cup.

Now aren't the OEM motors more reliable than the aftermarket parts?

That what they say but the difference in price for an OEM X13 and an Evergreen aftermarket is double usually. So 350 vrs 700 cost to contractor before mark up, which one do you think the customer is going to pick if they are out of warranty? ECM motors can go a long way though if you are good about replacing filters, and have an unplugged coil though. I find that they go bad more often when they are trying to run on a reduced static pressure because they run full speed all the time. I usually convert negligent customers or cheaper customers to psc motors.

@@alejandromata825 Reliability and quality is king with HVAC. As a consumer I would want the system to last as long as possible. Money isn't the be all and and all. Especially with HVAC costing thousands to replace.

@@nathenzuber4021 Everybody’s economy is different and if you have the economy to replace an OEM ECM out of warranty more power to you. But I did just give you some good honest bits of information there. If a unit is out of warranty chances are it is likely 10 or more years older if it is a split system, 5 if it’s a water source heat pump, at least where I’m at. Spending $1000 or more on a 10 year old unit to buy an OEM out of pocket requires considerable thinking, that’s not smart money! On the other hand, even if the aftermarket motor lasts 2-3 years, which it could last more if like I said the airflow is right you might be extending a 10 or more year old unit another 4 years which is a win considering that all the units manufactured 10 years ago or later were diminished in quality considerably. The days of units lasting 20 or more years are all but gone. Copper piping in the coils aren’t even spect out to the same wall thickness, compressor insulation quality is not the same, and electronic control versus electro mechanical controls will almost certainly guarantee that a unit will give you headaches way earlier and more expensive than they used to. Don’t like it, you can thank the bean counters and globalization for that! And finally if you really want to bleed a rock that keeps breaking on you I mentioned that I can easily switch it up at will into a psc motor that will be even cheaper and probably even last longer, just like I can take an older unit with an expensive or discontinued board and rewire it to work without the board but with all the safeties. So no, it’s not the OEM part that makes a unit run the longest, it’s the mechanic that knows what they are doing are willing to discuss all the angles with you to make an older unit work while making you aware of the exact cost to benefit ratio. I will tell you this, regardless of whatever ECM motor I install for someone out of warranty OEM or not, if there is an airflow issue that I see and you don’t address it when I replace the motor I wouldn’t guaranty it on my end. Same thing with compressors on older units with plugged evaporator or condenser coils, or if I notice a faulty or improperly functioning metering device, or faulty reheat loops and hot-gas bypasses on larger commercial units.

Broadocean motors are absolute garbage. If i see one in a customer's unit even if it still works i warn them about them to prepare them for the cost thats coming.

I dont want to offend you i swear. But you might want to get your lungs checked out. You sound like you have labored breathing. Unfortunatley that is a perk doing what we do for a living. Take care of yourself man. Get checked out. Throw in the towel if you have to.... youve done enough live long.
