Honestly, the Portuguese was no more interested in Macau and they would have given it up anyway. Cuz According to the Treaty, Macau was handed to Portugal "forever". So if they wanted they could have kept Macau even till this day.
Macau was landed to the Portuguese empire almost like a business treaty and never colonised by force. To this day, it has an interesting character and diversity, and has gained more respect from Chinese government than HK.
What was an agreement hundreds of years ago doesn't make sense in the modern world anymore. As a Portuguese citizen this was very sad to me but we have to accept with dignity that time changes everything. Nothing is forever.

The Mozambican Portuguese garrison in 1967 Macao, were Most Loyal, and did their best to defend Portugal, when the Koumintang Chinese buggered off to Taiwan,In fact, the MFA tried to return Macao to China in 1975 - 1976, but Beijing refused,as Macao was the conduit for foreign exchange and gold transaction.Overseas Portugal, 1413 - 1975 - 1999. Professor Marcello Caetano, was right, abandoning the overseas territories, Portugal would sink to oblivion internationally, as happened after 11th November 1975 in Angola, because Contra - Almirante Rosa Coutinho and Almirante Leonel Cardoso just gave sovereignity to the Afro - Marxists without multi - party democracy, (Mocambique to a lesser extent, as their civil war was later, and Machel had plenty of charming charisma).
Europe and the colonizers were the mistake some parts of Asia should have never experienced. Portugal made Macao poor. The Portuguese and their corruption and poverty held Macao back.
