  • Macao, a former Portuguese colony, has long been seen as a gateway between China and Portuguese-speaking nations. While there may be fewer native Portuguese speakers in the city since its handover in 1999, more Chinese are now picking up the language. In the final part of this 3-part series, CNA’s Deborah Wong explores this paradigm shift. Read more: cna.asia/3J3iyM3

    Portugal wants to boost trade ties with China. China is also Brazil's biggest trade partner.
    Then, there are a few Portuguese speaking countries in Africa which China has diplomatic relations with.
    There are benefits for people living in Macau to learn Portuguese.

      Not very bright are we? EVERY person on Earth is speaking a language of a "past master". Americans speak english because England used to be its master.........latin european countries speak a variation of Vulgar Latin...because they were former colonies of the Roman Empire........Chinese people speak the same language because the empire expanded over the centuries...and there were those that were the masters and imposed their language on others.
      And for many macanese the CHINESE are now the masters. So why should they speak chinese? In your view, they are merely the new masters.
      Get some prespective and stop being cringe.

    Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese are a different dialect of the same language. Nothing like nothing.
