This was not the actual ceremony. It was only a festive farewell. I designed the stages and the furniture for the actual Handover of Sovereignty Ceremony inside the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. It did rain all week. We had to cover the interior in plastic because the roof had not been properly finished.

You close your eyes and feel dizzy for a moment. “What’s that?”, I say? “Some alternate history where Hong Kong was handed over to the bloodthirsty Chinese? “Wha…” - you’re confused.
“Come on, let’s watch what actually happened”, as I load a new video. The screen stutters before Harrier jump jets come into view. A column of Chinese tanks, marching into the city on “handover day”, explodes into flaming embers as canister after canister of Napalm is dropped on them.
Royal Marine landing craft slam in to the beaches of Honk Kong. The video cuts to Li Peng’s head exploding during a speech in which he denounces Hong Kong sovereignty. “I can’t believe Tony Blair threw them to the lions” you say “Blair? Who’s that? Thatcher was in charge in ‘97”. The image of HMS Invincible, Illustrious, and Ark Royal sail into Hong Kong bay, Harriers screaming as they’re catapulted into the air above the city, Chinese MiGs and Sukhois spiralling and burning down.
“Thatcher would have never let THAT happen to Hong Kong! - are you mad?” “No, I suppose not…” you trail off and open your eyes.
Hong Kong is part of China.
The Communist flag flies across the city
Blair sold all our Gold Reserves
“But I thought the sun would never set…”
A tear rolls down your cheek
Everything good and old is dead.
