    Good afternoon guys from Kentucky - thanks for the videos - just got my ISUP this summer. I have a small pond in my backyard and have been out on it a couple times and this was really helpful. I rowed crew in college (a LONG time ago) and some of it was intuitive but I learned a bunch already from your videos. I also can't imagine folks not using a leash...especially in "open water" (which around here would be bigger lakes or creeks or rivers) definitely a must do I would think. Also, I have now taken my Golden Retriever with me twice out on my pond and she is loving it. (I think its because she can get closer to the ducks...haha) BUT she has a PFD and a floating leash too! So if folks are taking their furry friends along, make sure you know the conditions and have them protected as well. Cheers yall!

    • @blueplanetsurf
      @blueplanetsurf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So you don’t go deep into the water and hit the bottom where you could cut your feet or sprain ankles, knees etc. By falling flat your body stays close to the surface.

    I just received my board and the pump and pressure gauge do not work. I'm so disappointed. I had a trip to learn how to board this weekend.

    • @blueplanetsurf
      @blueplanetsurf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try to just keep pumping, many gauges don’t register until the pressure is over 1 psi, when the iSUP is full of air there is no pressure to register, so just keep pumping until the gauge starts showing a reading. If that does not work you should contact the seller or just buy a hard board 😎🤙🏼

    • @blueplanetsurf
      @blueplanetsurf  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most places in the US require a life jacket worn or attached to board, same rules as boats. In Hawaii, the coast guard considers SUP's surf craft and the life jacket is optional if you wear a leash. There are belts with inflatable life jackets available (just google it) that meet the life jacket requirement but they are not easy to use if someone falls in and panics, so we don't recommended for the inexperienced beginner. I hope that helps you, aloha!

    what's the rational to falling flat rather than feet first please?

    • @blueplanetsurf
      @blueplanetsurf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You want to avoid hitting the bottom. By falling flat you stay at the surface and don’t cut up your feet on potentially sharp objects on the bottom. If you jump in feet first you go deep into the water.

    There is an exception to #10 - always wear a leash. In my area it's illegal to wear a leash if you're on a river. With a stronger current, you could fall off and get pinned to a bridge pier or other obstacle in the water because your board went on one side while you went on the other. I don't know if that's ever actually happened with a SUP but at least a dozen times each summer it happens with rafts tethered together that then need to be cut loose by S&R.

    • @blueplanetsurf
      @blueplanetsurf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, on a river you should still wear a leash but it should be a waist leash with quick release, not ankle leash.

    • @momatotsosrorudodi
      @momatotsosrorudodi หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's good to make considerations for risks and inadvertent hazards, but I find it odd that they make it illegal. It's a bit of an overreach. The leash can be attached to the just below the knee as well and then it's basically just as quick and easy to detach(I struggle to envision a scenario where I couldn't detach it from my ankle, but a lot of people struggle putting on their own socks so I guess it's a real risk for some).
      Life vests are mandated already, which I don't oppose, but I struggle picturing a scenario where you're wearing a vest and still somehow drowned because of having a leash attached to your ankle.

    • @wiscadams
      @wiscadams หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@momatotsosrorudodi Our river is fast in places and cold. There have been a dozen rescues this year with people caught up on bridge piers. It dangerous for everyone involved. So the logic is that it's just safer to be separated from your board than to be stuck in the water. I'm sure most people could easily release the leash in an emergency but clearly there are those that fail to and laws like that have to consider the least competent person out there.

    Great video. I tried SUP for the first time and wanted to like it but had a hard time. I did more research on why it was hard and I feel the board I had was not the right size for my
    210 pound body lol. While I was able to do all the things like stand up and get back on after a fall it was painful to stand and paddle. Water was washing over my feet in very calm
    conditions so maybe my weight was sinking the board too much. Keeping balance was too hard as my legs were shaky and it tired my legs and feet. We were on a tour with a group
    so I had to keep up. I wound up going on my knees but that was painful also after a while lol. On the way back I had to sit on it like if it was a kayak with my legs raised on the sides.
    I could play tennis for 2 hours a day with no problem so out of shape can't be the problem. I would try again with a larger board and no tour.

    Aloha from Australia guys.
    Thanks for the tips. Really appreciate your video. If I’m ever in Hawaii I’ll be sure to come and say Gday.
    Bought my first SUP yesterday and took it for a 20 minute paddle in some calm water on the way home.
    Really enjoyable. Being a Kayaker I had most parts sorted but after watching your video found that I’ve had my paddle the wrong way, I was too diagonal and I didn’t get a leash with the board. Otherwise I did everything else right. The wind picked up as I arrived so changed plans and went upwind so I’d be blown back toward my start point if it got stronger, and it did just as I was returning. I had a good position, good stance and even thought my paddle was the wrong way around I did have a good depth on the paddle. Didn’t fall at all and had an enjoyable afternoon. I plan to do a sunrise SUP so will go up to the shed and grab a PFD AS I do not have a leash yet. In the meantime I have a dog leash so I’ll use that until an eBay one arrives.
    Thanks guys for a really helpful video. Much appreciated. 😊🤟

      That’s one way to do it but if you do that in the surf you will spend most of your session looking for your paddle. The paddle can also be used as a rudder to get back to the surface more quickly when getting dragged by waves, so I try to hold on to it whenever possible.

    Long time kayaker, in ignorance of SUPs, the first time I could not get up because I was looking down, and ended up using it like a kayak. Today, second time I managed to get up, looking forward did the trick. I still ended up doing two unplanned graceless dives into Lake Washington, but I am making progress. Thank you!

    Is there a certain length of lease to use?

    • @blueplanetsurf
      @blueplanetsurf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The leash should be about as long as the board for safety and so it does not catch you if falling forward over the nose of the board. Using a leash that is too short can result in falling on the board, broken ribs etc but too long also causes extra drag.

    Regarding holding the paddle backwards, nobody ever mentions the top grip is WAY more comfortable when you hold it the right way. The way many grips are designed, it will dig into your palm and be uncomfortable. When they hold it the right way, it's a lot more comfortable--this should be the teaching point. Also...I made a paddle board video from Austin! Check it out

    • @blueplanetsurf
      @blueplanetsurf  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True the handle is uncomfortable if held backward but on adjustable paddles the handle can often be rotated so it is not always a reliable indicator. I always like to explain why it should be held with the blade angled forward.

I’m very good at paddle boarding since my first time, I was the only one capable of standing up, but I still feel like this video is very educational for ppl who think they know how to paddle (And it low key made me realize common sense, is not that common😐) nice video tho!

    I just want to add that if in a moving river with potential strainers (partially submerged trees, debris), it very dangerous and possibly deadly to wear an ankle leash. I know of a situation where a paddler got their leash tangled in a downed tree and was not able to come up for air and died while on a guided tour. Either no leash or a specific quick release leash attached to your pfd are better options.

    • @blueplanetsurf
      @blueplanetsurf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that's a very good point, never use an ankle leash in rivers or strong currents. A waist leash with quick release is what I recommend.

    Which hand goes on top? Your dominant hand?

    • @blueplanetsurf
      @blueplanetsurf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mary, you use the paddle on both sides of the board to go straight and switch hands accordingly. If you are paddling on the right side, the right hand will be on the shaft and the left hand on the top of the paddle handle. When you switch sides to paddle on the left, the right hand goes to the top handle and the left hand on the shaft.

    Thanks for the great tips. I try to do everything you mentioned. I jumped and purchased a Red Paddle Sport 12'6 board a few years ago after interviewing several paddle boarders who recommended that model. I have tried it several times and cannot stay on it! It is 30" wide and I weigh 220lbs. The problem is, I cannot get back on it when I fall either! I go to estuaries and inlets with deep water. I was raised around boats and have some knowledge of getting out of water. When I try to get on it from the side, the board flips. I am kicking from the side and trying to get upper body on board. If I try the back, I cannot get far enough onto the board- I KNOW ridiculous right? So, in disgust I broke down and bought another board. I spoke to people again and they recommended a wider board. I thought 34" but was told I would do better to go with a 32" width. I ended up with a similar board but 2 inches wider, an Earth River Skylake 11'2" GT. It is more stable but still a challenge. I have been able to stand on it. An instructor watched me and said that I needed to practice. What aggravates me is that I see people going to rent them. They jump on boards and paddle off with no issues and I am struggling so much. I cannot stand on the board and not be moving or I am certain to go down. It is a constant sustained balancing act and I do not know if that is because of my weight for this sport or just the way it is. The problem is that our waters have alligators and sharks and I dont like the idea of going out without being able to get back on the board. Thanks from hopeful rider!

    Top 10 mistakes and you didn’t think to mention to wear a life jacket as one of the 10. I think that is more important than a leash. Or certainly in conjunction with a leash. You only mention it as an aside.

    • @blueplanetsurf
      @blueplanetsurf  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment. I talk about life vests in this video at 11:00. Regarding floatation devices: In Hawaii, the coast guard considers SUP's surf craft that don't require a pfd. Always wear a leash, which makes the board your floatation device. In most places in the US, a coast guard approved floatation device is required and should always be worn on the body, not tied to the board. Most drownings occur when the paddler is separated from the board, in which case a pfd tied to the board is not only useless, it gives you a false sense of security and your board will blow away even faster with a pfd tied to it.
