    What's your biggest paddle board challenge?

      Just transitioned from a 29’’ wide inflatable touring to an inflatable Naish Maliko 23’’ wide and struggle to balance. Any tips? 😁

    • @ethanhuffsup
      @ethanhuffsup  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@YiannisA Nice! Honestly, the biggest tip when transitioning to a narrower board is just putting in the time and practice. Start off paddling in calmer flat water conditions and simply get use to the movement of the board while working on keeping good form. Once your body is use to balancing in calm conditions then work on paddling in rougher conditions to improve from there. There will probably still be a lot of falling involved but continue to put in the practice and you'll see improvements!

    Thank you for your videos, I am paddling on Lake Thun, Switzerland, but still found your videos useful...
    Today I managed to fully capsize my board including drybag (the top side was down under and the fin sticking out, the drybag stayed firmly in the sup netting things) trying to learn the stepback turn... At first I struggled but once I aplied my basic optimist training from way back and grabed the fin and used it to push down whilst pushing up the lower edge it got turned right side up and I managed to climb on.
    Did 9km total today...(5. time on the board) though about 1/3 was whilst sitting.
    Definitively was glad to have worn a swimwest/sup flotation west, it helped imensly with my flipped board (failed to fall in correctly and put weight on the edge whilste falling)

    I wish I would have found your page a few weeks ago. I am a beginner on SUP, never knew it was a thing, but I am no stranger to the water. I have had years of fun on boogie boards and surf boards. (the big boards) I have had back surgery, and it was recommended by my physical therapist to do more core work to reduce back pain and sciatic pain. Also had a heart attack the same year, but I'm doing well now, at least the Dr is impressed. So I recently purchased an Ascend inflatable, that came with all the fun stuff. Mind you I am a larger fellow at 215 pounds and 5'11". So an 11' board is what was recommended, this thing is 11'L 34"W. I am not looking for all out speed, as I know that won't happen with this size board and my lack of stability at the moment. Went 5 miles on the water first day out. Used the paddle wrong, because why not? Lol... Did half kneeling and sitting with the paddle in the kayak configuration before I got the courage to stand, change out the paddle handle and really dig in to what I was doing. Was told this is a "full body exercise" well that wasn't a lie. The paddle techniques and mounting techniques would have been awesome to know before I went out the first time.

    Other than the weight calculation how do you size length wise a board for someone?

    • @ethanhuffsup
      @ethanhuffsup  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For adults I recommend using a board at least 10'8" or longer. If you want a board with better glide (how far the board moves forward between your paddle strokes) then I recommend using a longer board.
      Other than that it large depends on what you plan to use the board for such as for touring, racing or just a fun chill time on the water. Those each require a different size board as they are not only different lengths but also have different shapes.
      Anyways, I hope that helps you out!

    In your experience, what wind speed should make me nervous for flat water?

    • @ethanhuffsup
      @ethanhuffsup  ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on your experience, paddling abilities and type of board you're on. For most beginners, winds over 8knots might start to seem more difficult. But, the more experience you gain the stronger wind conditions you can paddle in. If possible always start paddling up wind first that way it is easier to return with the wind if you get tired.

    This is an expensive problem. Please give some tips how to reduce the paddles from breaking or suggest some better paddles. I have tried super long, regular, and super short. Doesnt really matter, paddles are lasting 3-6 months max.

      Hey! Sorry for the late reply. I'm definitely not a professional when it comes to SUP surfing but thankfully I have never had a paddle brake on me doing this. I normally use a one piece Black Project LAVA paddle for when I surf and it has held up great. The owner of Black Project Chris is also super helpful when it comes to the kind of questions you're asking, so I would recommend checking out their website and sending him an email as he will be able to give you more answers than what I can. I hope this helps.

    A Type III PFD will absolutely help you 100% better in an emergency than not wearing one at all. To tell new paddlers not to rely on one to help you because it's not an open-ocean Type I PFD is absolutely inappropriate and a negligent thing to tell new paddlers. Type III USCG / ISO/CE 70NM PFDs designed for paddling can help right an unconscious swimmer as they will always have more flotation on the front than on the back. They also are designed to (and do) keep your head above the water (that's just a totally false statement you made). They aren't guaranteed to rotate an unconscious swimmer like an open-ocean life jacket, but they will still help because of their flotation distribution. Not to mention that it will aid in your rescue in any event by keeping you physically at the surface and making it easier for a rescuer to locate, rotate, hold, and get you out of the water. Without a PFD an unconscious swimmer or someone struggling to breathe or swim is far more likely to quickly sink under the surface and drown. On top of all of that if you aren't wearing your PFD it doesn't matter if you have a Type 1 open ocean lifejacket or not in the events you describe. Even if you are wearing a Type I Life Jacket in the situation of having a heart attack if you don't have help nearby then chances of survival are minimal at best. What a ridiculously extreme example to use to put people off from using basic safety equipment. That's some seriously negligent content in your safety section. I see you're an ASI instructor - which both makes sense that the advice to not to wear a PFD comes from a surfing background, and is a serious shame on ASI to not promote basic safety practices for paddling. It's seriously bad advice for beginners and any paddler. The number one contributing factor to boating deaths is not wearing a PFD. There is no situation in which it is safer to not wear a PFD than it is to wear one (not the same for leashes, by the way). PFDs save lives.

      Hi Michael. I’m sorry for offending you and making you feel that I don’t support PFDs. I do support the use of them and recommend people to use them just like I said in the video. I was simply trying to convey the importance of making sure a new paddler knows the situation they are putting themselves into and does not put themselves in a higher risk situation relying solely on a PDF if things go wrong. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

    The way you swap hands 16:16 not in the way you mention the minute before :( You also miss discussing which way round the paddle should be - the bit in the water. Otherwise great video.

    Been tasked with teaching a class at work for guests how to paddleboard and kayak.. and I have very little experience on paddleboards. Will be taking some exact quotes from this for my lessons! Thank you for sharing the knowledge!!
