In the Netherlands when the government was trying to shut down all of the farmers the farmers got their farm equipment ,their tractors, and so on and drove them down the highways to their government and the government folded. The good part of this was that the government was replaced with politicians that understood the importance of farmers

The Idaho Department of Water Resources says the groundwater users subject to the curtailment order are being forced to stop pumping water because they are not in compliance with or stopped participating in an approved state plan. The Idaho Department of Water Resources said there are two plans water users can participate in to avoid curtailment when there is a water shortage. One is a 2009 plan submitted by the Idaho Groundwater Appropriators. The other is a settlement agreement from 2016.

Absolutely! Berlin and surrounds always had a water issue, Big companies like Nestle and Coca Cola are pumping the wells dry and selling "Spring Water" at hellish prices or "upgrading" the water to Coke.
Than there is the new Tesla Megafactory... Even there have been some water restrictions applied already, they APPROVED to built the Megafactory in a WATER PROTECTION ZONE, which needs 372000 liters (That is 98272 US Gallons) PER HOUR!!!
Tesla says, the need about 4.4 Cubic metre of water per Vehicle. (To compare nearby factories: VW electric vehicles 1.2cubic metre, BMW 1.2Cubic metre per car. But since Tesla has double capacity than BMW they will use 10x as much!)
Approved is about half of that, and they will recycle some, but this amount of water they need is insane. Most car companies need much less than that per car

They ended up lifting the curtailment order. The issue is that there was going to be a shortfall for senior water rights holders because of overuse of groundwater users who have junior water rights. The aquifer that the junior water rights holders draw from is drying up so they were taking surface water and caused the projected shortfall. The issue is, nothing has changed and the issue has just been pushed off until next growing season. With the aquifer drying up do you expect them to just take all the surface water so farmers and communities downstream on the river? So people who DEPEND on the river water to irrigate THEIR farms, have drinking water don't have any ability to use it? I mean where is the limit here? Who should get access to the water? THIS is why water rights exist and the curtailment order was ever even put in place to begin with.

The aquifer isn't there for just farmers; you have towns and cities that are using that water, and with the expansion of the population, it's only going to get worse. While this guy and others can go after senior shareholders that they aren't sharing water this guy and other JR shareholders agreed to two different agreements that senior shareholders willingly agreed to help them out. It's about time these farmers start changing their practices because even if the state changes the management, it would still be an issue. I have a nephew who lives in Akron, CO and they have been having issues with the draw down of the water table for decades. He researched an idea started in India where they look for depressions in the landscape that hold rain water, drill a vertical drain through the topsoil and fill it with gravel. This allows the rain water to percolate down into the aquifer instead of evaporating away. My nephew has been putting in these drains for free, donating his time and the materials. He calls them Johnny Drains, like the character "Johnny Appleseed". They are starting to see the water table rising again. The topsoil in his area is primarily hard clay that doesn't let the water percolate down into the aquifer. This may be something that Idaho could consider implementing as part of the solution.

    • @farmkidspm
      @farmkidspm 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

That area doesn't get much rainfall. Most of the water comes from snow (primarily in the mountains). In addition, the soil is quite sandy and readily absorbs what rain does fall. When they have excess surface water, they run it out through the ditches and elsewhere to soak as much into the ground and recharge the aquifer. A lot of water flows from the Snake River and on into the Columbia and the Pacific Ocean. They might be able to divert more of the Snake River and run it out over the desert to recharge the aquifer, but there are likely fish preservation laws requiring some minimum amount of water flow, thus limiting what can be used to recharge the aquifer.

Because people making those rulings look at numbers and not feelings. Irrigation for agriculture takes up 85% of Idaho's water supply. Public supply is 1.5%.
You can concrete every single golf field in the state and force every single resident to have a rock garden instead of a grass lawn. It will be a rounding error in what farmers consume each year.
Farmers have been consuming more water than is available for decades now. This will stop one way or another. Either because someone stops them or when the aquifers just run dry.

The Central Valley in Calif has a huge problem with aquifer water levels dropping to a dangerous level.
ID official are trying to prevent that but need to do it gradually, not all at once.
Scientists have discovered that the pace of groundwater depletion in California’s Central Valley has accelerated dramatically during the drought as heavy agricultural pumping has drawn down aquifer levels to new lows and now threatens to devastate the underground water reserves.
The push to drill more irrigation wells and rely more heavily on groundwater has caused problems for shallower domestic wells. This year, more than 1,400 dry wells have been reported to the state, the highest number since officials began tracking reports of dry wells in 2013

A part of permaculture is to design fields, that water doesn't flow away but stays in the ground, it is called water harvesting. UPDATE June 19, 2024: Water Curtailment Order lifted (Idaho Press)
Groundwater irrigators and surface water irrigators have completed a deal that saves 330,000 acres of Idaho farmland from being dried up and averts economic catastrophe in the state.
A mitigation agreement for 2024, brokered by Governor Brad Little and Lt. Governor Scott Bedke, has now been signed by all parties and has been submitted to the Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR for approval. When the deal is approved, IDWR will lift the curtailment for all nine ground water districts whose patrons irrigate with groundwater from the ESPA.
“This is a huge relief to our members, who have had their livelihoods threatened over the past month,” said TJ Budge, attorney for Idaho Ground Water Appropriators. “We want to thank Governor Little, Lt. Governor Bedke, Senator Van Burtenshaw and, especially, all of our groundwater district members for their sincere and significant efforts to get a deal done before it was too late.”
