    Kermode's passion and respect for the original is so admirable. It really is one of the finest horror movies ever made.

    0:32 - love how he says "its rubbish", like he's acknowledging the fact we all know that's goes without saying

    *sits down with tea, prepares for Kermode tearing this film to shreds* - is content.

    This has been a surreal experience. I saw this at the cinema but until I heard Dr Kermode talk about the footage from the original film I had completely forgotten. I still can't remember a thing about what came after that footage but I have definitely seen it.

    I respect Mark as a critic and i believe he understands what he is talking about.... But i am a massive horror film fan and love films with sequels Friday 13th, Halloween, saw etc. I know when i watched this that it wouldn't blow my mind in any way and knew it wouldn't go on to win oscars but i still enjoyed it!!! I just hope studios keep churning out more films with my fave charecters in it like Leatherface, Jason, Chucky et all.

    Im surprised there was no remark about how completely impossible the timeline was in this film.

    Does any body know any films that come close to the feeling of Texas Chainsaw Massacre? I think it is one of the scariest movies I've seen, and I've watched a lot of horror.

      The 1983 movie, Angst. Rather different in tone but the closest I can think of in Texas Chainsaw’s “oppressiveness”. More gore-y and disturbing, perhaps. Seen through the eyes of the killer.

      Tourist Trap has a very similar tone if turned down in severity. Very VERY creepy film. The Roberts Blossom Ed Gein biopic 'Deranged', made in the same year as 'Chainsaw' comes extremely close to having a near identical feel. Neither are as scary however. Stuff like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre happens in real life which later films in that franchise seemed to forget. Through-out the years the character of Leatherface was changed to tragic antihero/bullied butcher with face rot. Leatherface is the original was just some perverted creep in jeans, boots and a yellow polo who has some form of dementia resulting in alternate personalities, expressed with human skin. He's just a man though, and the 'realness' of Chainsaw was something nobody, not even Hooper could replicate. When Sally is literally begging for her life, when she weeps that she'd 'do anything' they want? Jesus, that film was brutal.

    Having watched the original, I had the same experience described by Carpenter; creeped me out like no film apart from Se7en. And then after it ended, I slept like a log.

    That's it, I'm gonna rent the original. I need to know what these films are despoiling.

  • @BikiniDeathSquad
    @BikiniDeathSquad 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Agreed. It completely misses the point, tone, and atmosphere of the original. All it manages to do is make me want to watch the 1974 film again.

    The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the definition of a classic horror movie. To re-hash it just to make money out of it's name and legacy is a complete travesty.

    As a writer of horror stories for a long time, and doing horror videos, I have same reaction. Why bother making horror movies if they're going to rehash the same ideas and thoughts? If the the film was well done, as in the case of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, why can't they just leave it alone?

    Well the one thing this guy got wrong is that it would come and go through the top 10. Movie made #1. Don't expect though at 1 next week but it'll still be in the top 10. Just to let you all know, you can google it....because this movie raked in the cash for the studio that made it a sequel has already been green lit. So yep another one is on the way. Oh and the studio also has the rights to do another 6 if they want.

    Texas Chainsaw Massacre rides the line of realism really well... You end up feeling like you saw footage of something real that happened front of the camera.... almost...

    I wish Kermode and Mayo would stop constantly referring to 'staring into the abyss' and almost always completely inappropriately. SITA is basically about being empty inside.That's the abyss. In Friday's show Mayo said that watching the impossible was like SITA and Kermode said pretty much the same about the original Chainsaw. WTF? The abyss doesn't symbolise literal terror or horror present in the world, but that which lies within because something is missing.

  • @woodlake96

    Imho,real horror is fear of the unknown.Things are truly frightening when things happen that you don't expect,so why ever make horror sequels? Lack of imagination,lack of good scripts & storylines inhibits the genre.

  • @SandmansHate

    It was the story that made this film great.

  • @TrevJ0hn
    @TrevJ0hn 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think this was a given that it would be rubbish, the original for me was shocking, creepy that first appearance of Leatherface, dam that's an entrance. Recent years seems to have spawned some kind of cash cow lets just keep remaking this film it makes money, the 3D is an obvious gimic to bolt onto this franchise.
    We thank you Mark for your suffering through this but we won't be watching.

  • @thomaslombardo3401

    These remakes are rarely as good as the originals. Add “ Last House on the Left”, “My Bloody Valentine” etc. etc. to the ever-growing list of boring remakes. Just my opinion.

    so its a sequel to the original that ignores parts 2 3 and 4 but it looks like the crappy remake and its prequel
    so whats the point in that then ? why was this made ? surely the public arnt stupid enough to pay to see this are they?

    The film’s poorly acted, poorly characterised, poorly directed, poorly written & is just as bad as its prequels & predecessors. (15%) (1/5 stars) (negative)

    They had such an awesome chance to make a great movie. It COULD have been a great idea. But NO....Hollywood just HAD to put out this cash-grab bullshit AGAIN. At least the 2003 remake was decent and hard-hitting. This movie was just another garbage sequel.
