exorcist is overrated ,its not that scary yet its rated as #1 horror movie in most reportings

@@khesipresents1885 a movie doesn't have to be the most scary to be the best horror movie. Same as a movie doesn't have to be the funniest to be the best comedy. Fargo is a better movie than Dumb and Dumber even though Dumb and Dumber is probably funnier.
I will always love the way Mark throws references at Simon that he couldn't possibly understand, and I will always love how Simon refuses to pretend that he does.

Like what, the concept of final girls or the film Eighth Grade? Because I don’t see why either is improbable. I was actually shocked that someone wouldn’t know what a final girl is lol.
@@serenacelestine no, when he says 'it's head cheese for the fans', and simon says 'head cheese for the fans?' then mark responds with 'there's a fangoria center spread...' and then he says 'what's a fangoria center spread' then he says 'exploding heads monthly and he finally says 'oh right, it's gristly'
In this review I get the impression that Mark has been drinking too coffee and has been awake for hours and Simon has has only been awake for half an hour and has a terrible hangover.
Sounds like most of their reviews!
I like how Kermode is enthusiastic about the reviews. You can tell he actually enjoys films unlike most reviewers whose entire goal is to attack stuff. Even the stuff he clearly dislikes, he does his best to identify the best bits about it such as the music. He is the only one I listen to because he he is good to listen to and he ids not just there to take checks. He seems more attuned to what the general audience likes than most critics but he does not pander either. I listen to him on Scala radio as he puts on music and then reviews him. It feels natural for him to review stuff.

The original is frankly perfect. Cinematography that is both beautiful and grotesque. Acting which is both hammy and then utterly convincing. Violence which is at once nearly bloodless and also feels super realistic. All in the service of creating an atmosphere of unrelenting terror.
The sequence when she escapes ‘dinner’ and is fleeing Leatherface, the sound of the chainsaw, i swear i did not breathe and could feel trigs and branches slapping and scratching me in the face.
One of the greatest movies of all time.

The original TCM is the only movie that makes me want to take a shower after watching.

Even as an adult. To this day, the dinner scene in the original makes me feel incredibly uncomfortable. It just shows the genius of the film, and the power of psychological horror. Sometimes it can be more effective than outright violence.
I have watched every video nasty, I watched all the horrors from the 70's 80's and any I missed I tracked down and watched as an adult. I have seen all the foreign language horrors from Europe and Asia and even though they have all been impactful, scary, disturbing, graphic and just plain weird I have never found any as unsettling as I did on that very FIRST viewing of the original TCM . I will admit I have tried to watch TCM again many many times hoping to capture that feeling of complete dread and terror I had the first time watching it but its never happened again. Many of the other horrors I have watched stand up to multiple viewings but for me TCM is a powerhouse but only on maybe the first few viewing but definitely the first viewing if you some how manage to go into it blind these days which I doubt you can
Along with that soundtrack, and that editing, it truly is disturbing.

To be fair to Netflix, they didn’t make this. They simply bought it from another studio that was shopping it around. And like most Netflix content, unless it’s their “top tier” content, they usually announce trailers/marketing a month or two before or release. They don’t invest heavily in marketing unless they view it as a big major title for them. This is clearly a lower-tier title to just release satiate their horror subscribers.
@@martin43427 Yeah but they don't even market sequel seasons to shows they do make. I remember not even realising Mindhunter had a second season until someone told me months after it released and i loved that show.

I met the late Gunnar Hansen who played leatherface at a sign in at Swindon a really nice genuine man.
Genuinely nice bloke. Met him at a signing at Forbidden Planet in Coventry.

Unlikely, I think. Texas Chainsaw was filmed in Bulgaria, and NCFOM was filmed in Texas and New Mexico. Having said that, it's not out of the realm of possibilities that they built a set based on the one from No Country!
I always love how Mark manages to mentions the Exorcist movies without fail, good or bad, relevant to the the review or irrelevant, awesome :)
I love how lost Mayo is here, as lost as the new chainsaw film is to the original.

The original was lightning in a bottle, a moment in time captured on film. It was revolutionary. You can't do that now.
Odd coincidence that he describes the movie as "head cheese". Franklin and the Hitchhiker talk about head cheese in the van scene in the 1974 original.

Firstly how has Simon not seen the First Texas Chainsaw, secondly how does he not know what a "Final Girl" is in horror or what makes them a "Final Girl"
I think that was for the benefit of the listeners who may not be as cine-literate. He often asks Mark to explain some of the jargon he uses.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is a brilliant Gonzo chainsaw film. Totally different from the first movie in temperament but a prefectly funny Saturday splatter film! 👍

Hooper knew he couldn’t catch lightning in a bottle twice, so he filled the bottle with absolute lunacy instead, and the results are amazing! Love that film!

You can try to do the texas chainsaw massacre dozen of times... you will fail to capture the magic. It's one of those things that are almost perfect due to its circunstances. Tobe Hooper knew it, that's why the sequel is a dark and bonkers comedy, not a pura horror movie like the first one. I like the remake with Jessica Biel, but even that one falls short.
I was appalled by the Texas Chainsaw sequels and prequels but at this point if I were in charge I'd just go whole hog and do Leatherface In Space. You're never going to capture the magic of the original so let's take things beyond ridiculous.
I want this movie. I want to see this movie. I want a scene in this movie that's as great as the happy campers scene in "Jason X". Somebody please make this happen!
It’s not quite on the level that you suggest, but Danny Boyle’s Sunshine might scratch this itch for you

Well, as H0lyMoley has pointed out, we've had Jason in Space, so why the hell not? We've had Pinhead in Space, too as a matter of fact. 'Halloween Kills' was already Michael in a seemingly endless vacuum, so that's been done.

I knew this movie would be bad but it was a lot worse than I expected. Only good thing about the movie was the final scene imo, not because it was scary but because it was hilarious.
The gore is the only good aspect of the film. Everything else is impressively mediocre. The writing is abysmal, the set up is absurd, and the characters are extremely dull. That bus scene where they whip out their phones with that cringe worthy canceled line might be the stupidest thing I’ve seen in a film in a long time. It’s a total insult to what Tobe Hooper created. Quite frankly, the whole thing is an insult to the original. I was genuinely open-minded going into it but I just couldn’t help but feel frustrated. All it managed to achieve is to make me realize how complete the original is.
It was all so lazy and ludicrous.
I quite like the two films that they made with R Lee Ermey.
Less annoying than Halloween Kills is all the recommendation i need thank you :-)

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was so brilliant because of its extremely low budget, documentary film style, and actually quite dangerous filming conditions. These aren't things that major studios want (or in the latter, should) want to replicate. That's why none of the Texas Chainsaw sequels need to exist.
"That recent Hallowe'en relaunch worked a treat. What other old IP's can we abuse? How about a film with Freddie Kruger's parents?..." ...presumably...
What's Mark referring to when he mentions John McNaughton's involvement in TCM3? I can't find anything on that - is he just mixing him up with director Jeff Burr, or was McNaughton attached to it in some capacity at some point...?
Who wouldn't want to see a Texas Chainsaw callback movie...? I kept expecting Mark to say, "It's fine..." 😄

I think Texas Chainsaw 2 is a misunderstood masterpiece. It’s just so much fun and Dennis Hopper is great in it. TCM3 could have been great if McNaughton had remained involved but I’ll go into this with an open mind. Not expecting a lot but it can’t be any worse than the more recent additions to the series!

I love these vids and I wouldn’t go anywhere else for my movie reviews but sometimes wonder whether Mayo really follows the review or knows anything about some of these films. Still love them though

The Longevity of Leatherface is the next one in the series
I genuinely enjoy Texas Chainsaw 2, but it is pretty damn dumb (though fun). Besides the first 2, the rest of this series has been extremely inconsistent, if not downright bad. I hope they explain as to how Leatherface is even still mobile at his age.

I grew up in Ireland and Ms Fouere was a name you'd see on the bill of all the main theaters at one time or another. She was a stalwart of the theater scene. I recall passing her in the street a few times. She's a very striking woman, so you'd be hard pressed not to notice her. I had no idea she had made the jump to movies and call it nostalgia, but I'm delighted for her!
Think I laugh more through the movie than they intended. From the almost South Park social commentary to the extreme gore. Very entertaining movie if maybe all for the reasons they weren't going for.

I used to hate TCM2, but over the years I’ve come to enjoy it for what it is, not what I think it should have been.

Given where the original film lands in the timeline of horror, I honestly feel that a lot of the tropes that became standard in its wake were introduced to rationalise its visceral, non traditional narrative and provide audiences with a sort of yellow gothic for subsequent slasher films. Villains had narrative rules, the genre had unspoken rules, therefore any story housed a rational outcome to non rational things. As long as film makers trade on that cinematic literacy, particularly in the post Scream and internet landscape, there can never be a true sequel to Chainsaw and nor does there need to be.
As a horror screenwriter trying to break into the industry I find modern horror so frustrating as people actually making movies have virtually no idea how to make scary movies. This film was stupid, looks ok but had so many plot holes, stupid dialogue and terribly written characters. Was at best 6/10

Got to be honest, I did similar to Kermode.
My brother lived in New York for a while in the 90s. I went for a visit one time and at that point both TCM 2 and 3 were banned in Britain so I’d never seen them. I remember he had a Blockbuster video near his apartment so I borrowed his card and rented both of them to watch while he was at work.
It was nice to say I’d finally seen them after all that time, but they weren’t great. I now own them both on BluRay here in the UK. How times have changed.
It feels like none of the films outside of the original (and the original part 2 to a certain degree) really understand the character of Leatherface. Or that he is not meant to be the SOLE threat (the 03 film was the closest to getting that part right).
I like that to define "head cheese for the fans" they had to come up with a whole bunch of other words that aren't actually words either lol
Random point i’ll make, Although Texas 2 was very different from the first, I feel as though (Aside from the ‘03 remake) it’s the most honest and best add on to the texas franchise. It’s fresh, it kept the sawyers, and lead a decent story with good scares.
Not really sure how the anecdotes added to the review but I enjoyed anyway. Still didn’t understand what head cheese was!

As someone who has been a fan of these two for more years than I can remember, I never fail to be amazed at Simon mayo’s lack of cultural knowledge or film knowledge in general.
I mostly just appreciate these horror flicks because they pay Colin Stetson to make amazing soundtracks. I'm counting it as a win

Sally is hands down my most favourite final girl. Marilyn Burns was beyond beautiful imo what an absolute stunner

Ginny is awesome. She runs circles around Laurie Strode and Nancy Thompson as far as I’m concerned, and she was only in one movie.

Texas Chainsaw 2 was interesting. Maybe a bit more cartoonish, but not bad. Without TC2 there'd be no Director Rob Zombie. For better or worse.

I've heard mark say on multiple occasions that the original has very little blood in it...Its definitely not gory by todays films but there is a lot more blood than a tiny prick on the finger, shes absolutely caked in blood at the end, theres blood squirting all over when Franklin gets killed, Kirks violent death has a lot of blood and trauma. I mean, I know he trying to make a point its just that he's kind of wrong.
I don't remember there being blood squirting around when Franklin gets killed. It really is nowhere near as gory as it's reputation and title might suggest.
I was thinking just this myself - plus, when Leatherface falls over and cuts his own leg there's a spurt of blood. While it's not a gorefest like TCM2, there is a fair bit of blood spatter going on in the original film, perhaps more the side effect of the kills rather than "injury detail" as the BBFC might say.
Chainsaws and cannibals, these are such two of my favourite things.

Mark looks exasperated so many times here at the multitude of queries along the lines of "what's head cheese'' - the poor fella. He forgot to reference 'Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers' as the film the BBFC most reacted most preposterously too over the word 'chainsaw' - going so far as to remove the word itself from the title and making the movie seem like a porno to anyone still interested in renting it after it had been butchered more completely than any of the chainsaw cult's victims in the film.. James Ferman, who essentially WAS the BBFC, once said in an interview, if I recall correctly, he would far rather censor something called 'Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers' than 'Frenzy' by Hichcock, implying it simply deserved it because it was vulgar trash and surely every good, God-fearing, monarchy-worshipping citizen of the British empire would agree. In truth however, 'Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers' was just a very low-budget, cult horror splatter comedy, starring Gunnar Hansen - the original Leatherface actor - but it's needless chopping up at the hands of Ferman was a perfect example of the gleeful, maniacally self-righteous snobbery that the BBFC represented and which was so effective a tool at distracting the British public from the true horrors of Thatcher's Britain.
I think I say the word "legumes" in a pretty splendid way. 🌱😀

Interesting tye term Headcheese being used, being the original title Tobe Hooper wanted to call TCM. Also any idiot would know if you want to male a direct sequel to TCM , then its not about the gore, its about (as Dennis Reynolds would say) The Implication, something that maybe only films like The Silence of the Lambs amd Se7en seem to understand

Saw this last night. It was not good, but thankfully it was only 90 minutes
I like his line about how the sequels aren't adding anything to the first movie because the first movie is what it is, a movie about a disturbed cannibal family that kill people. There really isn't anything more you can do with that and they should just stop trying at this point.
