We Made a Vodka Expert Blind Taste Test Bottom-Shelf Vodka

  • Cheap vodkas are not all created equal. Or at least, that’s what we learned when we made our spirits writer Jason Horn blind taste five different vodkas available for under $12: Smirnoff, Svedka, UV, Popov, and Pinnacle. Watch Jason suffer through each taste test to learn which bottom-shelf vodka came out on top.

    • @cedric7751
      @cedric7751 2 ปีที่แล้ว +95

      Because Vodka is by definition pure ethanol mixed with water. The only difference between brands is the water they use which can have a slightly different taste.
      An imperfect distillation process (which would be expected from the cheapest brands) can also leave impurities in the ethanol and alter the taste. If you can still taste the original fruit/plant used to make the alcohol then you are drinking a cheap, low quality vodka.
      Lastly, brands could also add artificial flavoring to try to differentiate themselves from the competition but once again, this would typically be something that low quality brands do.

    • @antonr2-d250
      @antonr2-d250 2 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      I will disagree. I’m Ukrainian living in Poland and I can approve that there is difference between ukr and pol vodka in smell and taste. Mostly Ukrainian vodka was better but there is one more thing, some vodka brands can taste different through the years or in other countries. I don’t know how to explain this but this could be the reason of water quality or distillation.

    • @davidmcguire6043
      @davidmcguire6043 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@cedric7751 you clearly don't know anything about alcohol distillation there are a lot of factors involved even with something like vodka a good vodka should minimize the offensive tastes and odors while still retaining a floral and or herbaceous flavor purely from the oils that were distilled into the alcohol from the original Mash. Buffalo Trace Distillery the most award-winning whiskey distillery in the world recently came out with a high-end vodka distilled 179 times personally by their Master distiller Harlan Wheatley and it still had flavor.

      Vodka is a unique drink. How you describe it's quality is completely unintuitive. Generally speaking, a better vodka has *less* pronounced flavors. A basic way to look at it is that it should be as flavorless as possible. Obviously as you get more invested into it it does get a little more complex, but that's the gist.
      Which is honestly why I prefer whiskey, like Scotch or Bourbon, because it's way more interesting in my opinion. Even the cheapest whiskeys are more interesting than the most expensive vodkas I've tried. But, to each there own.

    Notice how regarding Smirnoff he also said that "this is what the law says vodka should be" yet gives it a rating undeserving of such a description. A perfect example of these types of "experts" really just liking to run their mouth. Pure pomposity.
    As an "actual" expert on alcohols since my sailing and college days, when it comes to the standard cheap stuff, at least in the US, Smirnoff is hard to beat. When in Europe I'll usually go for Serkova if I had to choose between the two. I find the taste differences between corn vs grain so subtle that it's negligible - motivating me to simply reach for the cheaper option.

But basically what @Ya Dingus was referring to is when people cant stop drinking alcohol meaning alcohol becomes this addictive thing that turns into something unhealthy because if youre addicted to something you tend to want to consume it as much as you can and we all know its not good for our health if you consume too much alcohol... Drinking alcohol is fine and all but you gotta have a limit... So yeah, the "cant stop drinking alcohol" doesnt always necessarily mean that that person is addictive but in that context they were talking about addiction rather than your lifestyle/habit/hobby

    as a "vodka expert" myself, i keep going back to smirov. it just disappears in any drink, it gets buried under any other alcohol if you wanna boost the proof without changing the flavor, it's cheap, it;s walmart available, it gets you drunk, it doesnt taste like plastic. I just keep going back to it. I love a good whiskey and coke but i find that ramping up the proof and drinking less coke is my secret sauce, so do equal parts smirnov and whiskey and it tastes the same, you get that balance of the whiskey flavor and the coke and it gets you twice as drunk, so that's fun.
