Thanks a lot for this amazing episode and interview. It was so informative. A couple of thoughts I want to share. 1. Rick Remender has found the sweet spot of oversized hardcover editions. His books are beautiful to look on the shelf and for great value. 2. The production and management aspects of Kickstarter projects are a challenge to the artists. What is completely unresolved, however, is the international distribution aspect from a customer point of view which will also eventually affect artists. If a comic book fan in Europe or Asia is able to afford 100 books a year for which they don't have to spend oversea shipping costs, that number will drop drastically if they start supporting Kickstarter books as well due to the high international shipping costs.
Great episode. I found Butterbean’s work on Tokyo Ghost because I dig Murphy’s work. Loved the series and have been working to accumulate all the rest of Rick’s creator owned books. Knowing it’ll help get Matteo another check, ill just have to stick to my black science compendium…until I can get enough money to get the deluxes haha
Phenomenal episode gentlemen. Rick’s a great guest and what his vision is for creator owned work is inspiring. I’ve been assembling my full collection of Black Science and it’s such an amazing work. My artist for my creator owned work said that my writing reminds him of Remender to which I’m extremely flattered by. It may be because the story is a multiversal tale. Thank you for all you do.
Todd McFarlane is already doing crowdfunding with his toy brand. He's been doing it for the last 4-5 years. Todd just did a Medieval Spawn Kickstarter. Basically if you want this collector style high end figure, you only get it from the Kickstarter. And they make them to order. Hasbro does something similar called Haslab. Where they community fund toy projects that otherwise would never happen. So there are loads of examples of large companies crowdfunding, small niche project's. Todd is already doing it and he's at Image... So it's a possibility it could happen!
Rick Remender is awesome ! Happy to own all 3 of the large hardcover Black Science books, absolutely beautiful
Thanks for listening!
