    We are finally working on the Unimog again!
    In this episode we are taking apart the front of the mog, including bumpers, lights, elephant ears, brush guard, hood, mudguard and other small bits and pieces. If you are planning on doing the same thing, be prepared for it not to work out as fast as you thought it would (pretty much like with everything else of the conversion as well :P). Our passenger side is really rusty and most of the bolts just don't wanna come out. We are using the ict lubricant (L-10) which is really good BUT some of these bolts are just hopeless and so we snapped off some of the heads. Not sure yet how we will get the rest out :D ?!
    Getting the headlights out of the bumper is a bit tricky as well. Even with everything unbolted, they don't fit through either side so you have to take the light apart in order to be able to get it out. Once you take the front bit off, you can take it out the front, and then the back housing has to get pulled out the front half way, then turned 90 degrees and then it actually fits out the back. Took us a while to figure that out!
    After all this was done, we got the cab ready for tilting. This includes 4 bolts that you can find on the floor of the cab, the air intake hose, the coolant lines that go into the cab (make sure they are unclipped - ours were already unclipped before) and make sure to lock the hooks on the front sides of the cab. Depending on how far you wanna tilt the cab, you have to move or remove the alternator as well. Since we weren't tilting it too far and only needed enough space to be able to work underneath and treat all the rust, we didn't have to move the alternator at all! If you are planning on building some sort of holder, to keep the cab up, you have to make sure the passenger step (bottom one) is attached, since this is one of the holding points.
    We hooked up a chain on the ring at the back of the cab and lifted it with a forklift (lucky us that we can use the forklift all the time, it is literally the most important tool for us :D). When we got it to the right height, we built a metal bar out of 3mm 40x40 SHS and a bunch of holes and put it in place. Afterwards we lowered the forklift and everything stayed up so we only put two acrow props at the back to make it double secure since we will be working underneath it a lot .
    Next week we will show you how to remove the rust and especially what you could do with that one rusty spot under the cab every mog has (or will have). Not only that, we will also do some more painting again (not the engine though ;)) and cover the bottom of the cab in ute liner!
    A BIG THANKS to all of you for all the support and love towards us and our project. We really appreciate each and everyone!

    Very cool! I have an early U1300 and don't have the cab tilt/support brackets. I finally understand where both ends are supposed to be.... future project!

    Tricky job tilting the cab. You have done well. Temporary support with wood or something on the other side would eliminate twist in wind gusts - always a possibility working outside. You've done well. These are hard jobs but you've got the right attitude.
    Sending the Hard Drive to an affiliated company is a good idea. Hope that bears fruit.
    Winter now here in England. Cold enough to snow, next week! Enjoy your Aussie sandal safetywear weather problems!!

    as a rule of thumb on the mog.......whenever you go over a 20mm socket size........go up to a 3/4" drive, it'll save a lot of broken tools and swearing

    • @PatandJele
      @PatandJele  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that's why we got a 3/4" set right at the start :)
