Love catching up on the latest about the Submarine Fleet. I served 1961-1981 in the Sub Force; USS Grampus SS-523 for 1 year, USS Theodore Roosevelt SSBN-600(B) for 7 years and on the USS Thomas Edison SSBN-610(G) for another 5 years. Interspersed with shore duty at Saratoga Springs, N.Y. fr 3 years and Nuclear Repair Shop (10D) Supervisr in Pearl Harbor for a year and 1/2, before retiring with my 20. Always the Submarine Force!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey , didn't one of the navy's own get court martialed for taking a picture inside a sub, and here we have a documentary of the inside of the sub !!! WTF?????
Home style service is SO much better than having to train a newbie every patrol on how to put the food where you want it and how much of it you want. (Not only that, but get rid of the chow line setup and you gain quite a few square feet of deck space you can use for other things. And while I am at it, I might mention that someone(s) seem to have forgotten how each individual frame of the USS Greenling SSN614 got to be seen from the outside of the hull. (We won't mention analog guages at all)
The USS Colorado? Damn am I proud. In my young days, we we worshipped our HOGS. The ground pounders know! But the A10 has nothing on this sub. Gone are the days of a type 7 crash dive! Love this boat!!!!!!!!
As a former 688I boat sailor, I can only look on in amazement at how beautiful those Virginia boats are. It would have been a pleasure to serve aboard one. Stay safe out there!
When I saw this video I could not believe it was a submarine is some of the parts actually look like a regular ship and or ship a very large thank you to these brave men that took on the mantle of such a dangerous job not saying no job in a military service is dangerous but God bless you and all of your brothers and sisters that serves to protect the United States of America One Nation under God and we will always remember those who has fallen and we'll always have the correct words on ellipse that will always yell out all colors never run
So why did they change the naming convention with the Virginias? It was traditionally that the 688s bore the names of major cities while Tridents bore the names of states. Made it easy to avoid confusion. Now you don't know the boat type based on its name. Why?
For a moment I thought there would be some confusion naming a submarine after a state (are their others?), knowing that battleships were named after states but then realizing they have been decommissioned, except for I believe the Arizona, Missouri and possibly the Ohio but I'm not sure of the Ohio or others?

I was a radioman and I'll freely admit the cooks make or break a crew. Good food = Happy Crew. Best cooks were able to still make decently edible food after the fresh stock ran out after a couple of weeks.

Thank you Navy for our many freedoms!!
Starting at 11:20 to 11:37 the radar waves interfere with the camera, you can tell by the sound. Interesting.
I dont think i would want to stand in front of it either
It's low power probably below a kilowatt. So not very powerful compared to a normal 25 kW navigation radar on a surface ship.
Thank you for your service !, God Bless US Navy
As a contractor working on these subs we take our job very seriously to make sure the sailors come home safe

Submarine is a superb engineering masterpiece. It is great to be in it.
You can see why it takes certain characteristics to live on a sub. Most can't handle it.
Yes. Those "characteristics" must include insanity ...

@Truth Yeh, he's a pretty good one ... But in my book, it's the guy who reads the road map and gets it to where it's going ...
@MrCloudseeker Was pretty much feeling the same thing ...
very nice video
The engineering and logistics that go into putting just one of these subs to sea is mind boggling!
What do You mean exactly?
It's got to be cold running in and out of Groton. The ski goggles were a nice touch. The fast attack guys always had fresh food.

why don't we make the front of the ship a shok absorber if there's a collision...?

This might be a stupid question, but what protects all those electronics those guys are using at the top of the con tower when it dives?
They retract into the sail (what you're calling the "con tower").
