    When I bought my Betta (I did buy him at a store, sorry) the guy talking to me said "oh, you don't need a heater or filter or anything, just keep it in a cup with a small plant and feed it once a day (meanwhile I'd done research for a month on everything I could possibly need) and my dad tried to make me get my beautiful Betta a tiny little .5 gallon container and I nearly flipped. I got a 2.6 gallon tank (because I'm going off to college soon and will need a small tank to keep him with me there) with a 3 step filter and made sure to get a heater and thermometer. The guy looked annoyed that I didn't take his "advice".

    I work in a petstore and I literally get into so many arguments w customers because I try telling them what they need for their betta fish and how big of a tank they need. Sucks how they rather go with a .25 gallon "bowl" that's almost the same price as a 2.5 gallon tank (yeah wtf). I try so hard to educate people but it's come to the point where I just say the minimum tank size is 1.2 or 2.5 because I just know they will never go for anything bigger or they'll straight insult me if I try otherwise. The problem is these people who are so ignorant when it comes to fishkeeping. Yes corporate animal stores aren't great, but if only people were willing to be educated, then a lot can change like those stupid myths about bettas. But I realize that's too much to ask for lol

      caronicole I am so glad you said this because yeah many of the big chain pet stores spread misinformation about bettas, but consumers are perfectly happy believing it because it's easier for them.

      I've seen local pet stores spread lies about fish and keep bettas in cups still. Sometimes I see fish with ick and they still keep them in the connected tanks which horrifies me. If the store manager only cares about making money and if the employee only cares about getting the 8 hours over with, the fish will suffer. If even one of these are met, either the employer wants to actually have healthy fish on display or the employee want the fish to live happy lives after leaving the store, makes all the difference in the world.

    • @cnp5336
      @cnp5336 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Budget Fishkeeping yeah I agree. I actually care about the animals at my job and so do my coworkers. But I know in other places it isn't like that. Compassion and knowledge isn't required or enforced in petsmart and petcos.

    You couldn't be more wrong about the petco betta's. DON'T buy them.
    If you buy, Petco will want to sell more, so they'll buy more.
    The only way to stop Petco treating those fish so badly is to stop buying them.

      I manage a pet store and sadly this isn't true... Too many people are uneducated on the proper care a Betta needs, and when informing them, they're usually unwilling to take the extra mile when a gallon bowl is 4.98. It's sad, but you'd literally have to get these people to stop buying Bettas which is realistically impossible. Think about abstaining from meat, you may think you're making a change, but the overwhelming majority of people eat and are raised eating meat. A few people compared to most isn't going to make a difference.

    • @IVIenac3
      @IVIenac3 7 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      if you sell them from cups, people will think that a cup is fine, since it looks so 'cute' on the salon table. Display and sell them in a proper aquarium, and people will be inclined to follow the right example.
      it will also keep the fish happy and healthy in the store.

    A year later and this video is still effective. Saw this and wanted one, so bought a 5 gallon, and got my Betta, Buddy. I never new a fish could have so much personality. Every time I open the top lid he swims up and sticks his head out of the water, he also expects to be feed 1 pellet of food at a time, if I put more than one in he won't eat anything past the first one. 7 tanks and he's one of the interesting.
    Although, my new dwarf puffers are taking up most of my time now with trying to get the to eat and use to their new home.
    How's Jeff?

    By going to Petco and purchasing bettas you might be saving one betta from a sad life in a cup, but you are only supporting the practice and the store by purchasing their product. By buying that one fish you are telling the store "Hey I love that you keep your fish in subpar conditions here is my money and support to keep doing this" and it'll only fuel the cycle of keep hundreds and thousands of animals in poor condition. You have a very large fan base and I'm a little miffed that you would make such a misinformed statement to so many people to go out and support places like Petco.
    I would instead implore people to find local stores and breeders who keep their fish happy and healthy and support those stores instead.

    • @DarbHikes
      @DarbHikes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      This isn't true. They will continue to buy fish regardless if you abstain. There are far too many uneducated people willing to purchase bettas without looking up or heading the advice of someone more knowledgeable than themselves. Believe me, as a manager of a corporate petstore, there are far too many willing to throw a poor betta in a bowl without a second thought.

    • @ZookieDragonet
      @ZookieDragonet 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I agree there are a lot of people who don't care or just don't know, but I think having the mentality of "nothing will ever change" is dangerous and prevents even the possibility for change. Nothing ever happens rover night but with more and more people advocating for the care of animals I think it's always good to keep spreading knowledge and supporting those who practice good animal husbandry.

    • @DarbHikes
      @DarbHikes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Of course, but coming from experience that isn't practical, at least in the pet business. We are an incredibly tiny minority of enthusiasts who think this way. I try to educate as many people as possible, but again regardless most people are gonna try to save a dollar.

    • @ZookieDragonet
      @ZookieDragonet 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      That's ok! I never meant to bash anyone who didn't have these resources readily available, I know a lot of areas don't have many pet stores except for chain stores. Some people just don't even know there are other options, Im not here to police people and ban them from petco, I just wanted to remind people to check their local resources and do the best they can.

    To everyone saying that buying Petco bettas is wrong:
    It honestly depends on your Petco. The fact of the matter is, I guarantee you those bettas are being shipped in from Thailand, which is what a lot of private breeders will do to get a sire for their fry. Additionally, the bettas are in the cups because it would be too expensive to keep each one in a 2.5 gallon tank, and Petco is more motivated by money, and while they are ideal, they really aren't necessary *while the animal is in the pet store.* This is similar to keeping a cat in a cat carrier in the car, or a dog in a crate in a shelter. Private breeders ship their bettas out in small bags; are those inhumane? The fact of the matter is, if you're buying a betta, you're potentally keeping it safe from kids or college students who purchase fish as decorations or low-maintenance kids' pets.

      Me too. I mean, take care of the pets, but there are allot of other variables pet stores have to consider most consumers don't think about. Although, I am a college student currently doing allot of research before getting my betta so I can take proper care of it both during and after my college career. I'm planning on a 2.5 gallon tank for my beta, but will probably upgrade it once I have more room for it.

      @Alanna C Wal-Mart really sucks at this. Most petcos and petsmarts have clean water in the betta cups at all times.
      The other day I was in Wal-Mart and bought an aquatic plant and two employees were kinda arguing. The one was telling the other he has to learn to do the fish too, even if he doesn't want to because he doesn't want to do it either. Then proceeded to say that he's killed so many fish. Right. In. Front. Of. Me. The person who is buying something from them. Not surprised though.

      I work for a big box pet store, my coworkers and I actually take pride in how we care for all our fish, especially our bettas(bc they're so often mistreated). We quarantine and treat for illnesses for our bettas. (Using the cups and doing daily 100% changes with medication if neccesary.) I know we're an exception to a rule. But, I wish more people would at least give stores a chance instead of automatically accusing us of animal abuse or negligence. We do the best we can with what we have. None of us want them to be in cups. And we put as many in community tanks as we can. (Pretty much only plakat or females bc our systems are a bit to rough on long fins.)
      Unfortunately at the lfs near me 3 out of 4 keep them in even smaller containers than the store I work for. The Petsmart Petco and PSP bettas all live longer than the lfs ones I've had. My lfs do an amazing job of caring for everything except the bettas. The employees at one lfs in particular have even argued with me when I've purchased filters/heaters for my bettas there.

  • @1kinut800
    @1kinut800 7 ปีที่แล้ว +133

    Hate to see the bettas in the cups BUT when you buy them from Petco/cup-keeping-stores, they just feel there is a demand so they just buy more and put 'em in little cups. And the people breeding these fish just continue to breed more like puppy mills, except using fish. You may buy 2 or 5, but there the other 50 who will sicken and die in the little cups. People also buy these fish because they're beautiful and think they don't need any maintenance, have the fish for a few weeks and it dies because the buyer has no idea how to care for them. Lots of people don't even know these are from the tropics and need to be kept in warmish water, or that they shouldn't be fed dry food all the time. So the fish live minimal lives for a minimum amount of time.

    I’ve got a beautiful beta named Waffles in a 5 gallon along with 3 panda platies, Oreo, sprinkles, and Rose. (I’m getting a 10 gallon in a few weeks) I have a heater, filter, and lots of live plants. I feed him, and the others every day and have an LED light to help the plants. I however did not place him right by a window, he rests on a tank stand by one. The platies and Waffles get along great and are all happy and healthy and eat regularly. The things that you need to improve your tank are~ a heater, and a filter. The comments section needs to chill about the petal betas, yes the way that petal treats their betas is literal animal abuse, but by buying a beta you do save it. That’s really all, I hope this helps~

      a filter is more important then a heater.
      a filter processes highly toxic ammonia into mostly harmless nitrates.water changes aren't going to help when the ammonia is being broken down.
      you can keep the room warm enough to keep the tank at the right temperature but you can't water change enough to off set the ammonia spike your fish will constantly be going trough.

    • @dmand2353
      @dmand2353 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      If your tank is planted and you keep up with the wc your fish will be fine. I don't run filters with my bettas and my last betta lived to 4. The ambient room temp can drop to below 10c and that is wayyy to cold for bettas.I am not saying you should not run them I do advice them for beginners but it is not needed.

      plants mainly use nitrates and can't make up for the lack of benifceail bacteria the filter is supposed to contain.your betta may have lived to be 4 but did you ever check to make sure their enivorment was actually heathy for them cause bettas can surive horrible condations.
      room temperature varies from preson to preson.my room keeps the water at 28 c cause I like it hot in my room.but in other poeples homes it can get pretty cold.

    Buying a betta from Petco/Petsmart won't change ANYTHING about consumer demand or how many bettas are put into those conditions. Both stores will never stop stocking bettas unless a huge amount of people ((and i'm talking an extremely large public movement)) stop buying bettas. Saving one life is better then having them all rot away in cups.

    Going to buy our first fish tomorrow and we're getting a betta. Thanks to TH-cam and videos like this I feel thoroughly educated on what a betta needs. Today I bought and setup a 30L (about 6gallon) tank, filter, heater, led light, plants and some (soft!) artificial plants, moss balls, pebbles and lava rock. Will also be getting shrimp and snails. Cleaning kit is at the ready. Water has been conditioned. Got bloodworms and sinking pellets. I think the little fishy will be OK 👍🐠

    As a person who works at petsmart, i wanna give my two cents which is: Betta fish die a lot less often than some of the ones taken "better care of" at the fish wall. Transporting any fish is really traumatic for them, but bettas can handle it much better than others. As of christmas eve, when bettas are going like hot cakes, we have two (only two!) sick bettas in the back room, where as we have probably 30 or 40 healthy ones on the sales floor. Overproducing to the degree that tons of stock dies off is not profitable. It may be rough on the fish, and you can feel free to still take issue with that, but it's not a death sentence.

    I know this was over a year ago now so you might have already got this covered, but (better safe than sorry) fyi since betta fish are labyrinth fish they require oxygen from the air too, even when they’re sleeping. So it’s a good idea that you have some sort of solid foundation or plant that can bear their weight that’s near the surface of the tank. That way they can quickly swim up and get their oxygen easily.

    As far as I know for betta tank it's a controversy among fish keepers whether you need to put a filter with betta. I think if your tank is well planted there's a good chance that oxygen are already plenty in it. In regards to the heater, I live in a tropical country so bettas thrive well here without heater since it will just cook the fish if you tried to put one. So if you live in a cold country you really need to have one and if you live in a super hot country you need to have a fan or AC to cool down the water.

    for the second one, it's way easier, I'm pretty sure the bags don't have price tags so no getting caught??
    also if you do that and you are full of extra tanks and supplies in your house

    • @briannaharter4411
      @briannaharter4411 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      you need a filter especially in a smaller tank cause that is where most of the beneficial bacteria live.without a beneficial bacteria power house/filter the tank will quickly become toxic cause the ammonia won't be processed fast enough into nitrates which can lead to ammonia burn.no amount of water changes you do will help if the ammonia isn't being processed.
      in a bigger tank you could get away with not having a filter cause there's more surface area for the bacteria and water to dilute the waste.

    • @BigCityBettas
      @BigCityBettas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Unfortunately, he passed away likely because of starvation (I know, it's probably one of the worst ways for a betta to die. RIP Beau.) but we bought him another one (Felix Navidad or Felix). Within a week of purchasing him, he became really lethargic, fins clamped, and wasn't eating. I took him home and kept him in a dark bucket. I treated him with Melafix, Aquarium Salt, and Epsom salt baths with some Kordon Fish Preventative Bath. His condition was critical for about a week, but afterwards, he was right as rain. I brought Felix back to his office where he happily munched on his betta buffet. He is such a sweet, active boy. All of my bettas have different personalities. There's few fish out there that are as spunky as a betta fish.

      I did find a comment where he said it was summer & the temp was warm enough & he was getting a filter. Everyone starts in the hobby somewhere...if we continue, the more we know the better we do. I know I made a lot of rookie mistakes when I started with fish at 12 with no adult supervision and they continued into my adulthood. Thank God for the internet!

    Better thank than before! A little small, but it's ok. You're missing a bed for him though. He needs a floating log or a leaf at the surface to bask and sleep on.

    Months before I got my betta fish I was looking at a lot of different fish videos online and I kind of became obsessed with bettas and learned a lot. One day my mom needed to go to petsmart for something (I honestly forgot what) and I saw some really beautiful betta fish. My mom noticed how interested I was and encouraged me a bit to buy one. So I impulsively bought one and put him in a vase with bottled water temporarily for roughly a week (it was a 1 gallon vase which is pretty sad actually) and then went hunting for a tank. I bought flakes, small pellets, and freeze dried bloodworm so he could have a variety. I also grabbed some tetra aquasafe, easy balance, and safestart conditioners. I found a pretty decent 5 gallon tank that came with a filter and a small led light. Bought a preset submersible 50 watt heater for a 2 to 15 gallon tank that maintains the temperature at 78 and a got thermometer. I bought the 5 in 1 easy strips and an amonia test kit. So far the tank is a bit bland and empty I do have 2 plant's, a small bamboo sprout with a little devil's ivy vine, in the corner for the little guy to hide in. I also have a 10 gallon tank but that one's preoccupied at the moment with a mouse. I was originally going to wait until the mouse passed away and save up money to use it for an aquarium but that plan quickly crumbled when I saw a really beautiful betta fish swimming in a disposable cup at a petsmart. He has a lot of swimming room in the tank, I'll definitely get more decor later and get some plants.

    Sponge filters rated for 10 gallons work great in my betta tanks. One was 2.5 gallons at one point. Dr. foster and smith has them.

    I have a couple of questions about Betta fish,
    Does it matter how big the tank is? Like can they have really big tanks to themselves
    What rocks aren't okay in a tank with them, Is Quartz okay?

    • @cindy1734
      @cindy1734 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Crazzy Toonz a tank over 2.5 gallons is good, the bigger the better :) For rocks you should boil them before adding them to a tank to get rid of any germs but make sure it has smooth edges so it doesn't tear your betta's fins

    bettas can live in puddles. i’m not saying they’re happy there, but in the wild some live in puddles when the water level goes down. the limited water in the cup is definitely okay for a limited time as real life freshwater sources with little to no current will fluctuate in size naturally

    He looks like a very happy fish. As long as you don't have an earthquake your betta is probably safe. Lost a tank of koi living in California and learned that my fish had the instinct to leap out of the water during a quake. I learned quickly and bought a tank lid but my breeding female guppy found her way out the coin sized feeding hole of the lid. Looked for her in the tank for an hour before I realized she got out. What are the odds, right?

    I only had one betta jump out, well her companion fish pushed her out. She lost a lot of fin tissue, but I nursed her back and didn’t put anymore fish with her. Honestly if the water level is right your fish is fine.

    He is a spoilt little fishy haha, he looks so much happier. I just went and got myself a betta fish the other day courtesy of the hubby, he started out in a bowl for 2 days just until I had his 2.5 tank set up, personally I don't think a 5 gal will be needed, he is very happy with his tank now, he has a nice filter that isn't a strong current, lots of swimming space too, I am working on getting his heater next pay check as well as a few more decorations for him, I got him at Petco and tbh they shouldn't sell animals but I am glad I saved him, when buying a betta fish and getting them the right set up and needs you save them from a miserable situatution and the beautiful thing is, you can tell the difference in them after, they perk up and they spread their beautiful fins out, their colors brighten up too. And they love you haha, my betta just constantly wants to watch me and interacts with me.

    In my local pet store, fish are in big aquariums. Discusfish with discus, black molly with dalmatier molly. And they always put some plants in there. I didnt know that pet stores in your country put them in a small cup. Thats the worst thing to do.

    I have a female in a 2.5 gallon, and she is the most active little swimmy thing. Seriously, great health, and she was from my local petsmart. I don't mind buying from my petsmart as they take really great care of their animals, even their bettas and goldfish. Anyways, female bettas are GREAT starters, even easier than males because they have smaller fins and are less prone to fin rot and tearing :)

    Before I knew how to properly handle bettas, I actually kept one in that exact glass skull. He instantly hated it so we moved him. My interest in fish has sparked again and I’m currently in the process of getting a new betta. I was about to buy a 3 gal tank for $80 when I found a 10 gal on sale for $48. That fish is gonna me crazy spoiled.

    I have 8 bettas. 4 boys and 4 girls. I rescue them from Walmart. The best thing is to watch a sick, dull, lethargic betta become healthy, vibrant, and lively in their big tanks. I love them all to death.

    Couldn't agree more 👍 After having a few 20 years ago, I just picked up 2. Fantastic character and personalities, and they do need saving out of those petri dish death traps they are sold in. 👍 Wonderful fish everyone should look at getting at some point.

    Betta fish are pretty awesome. I had one a year or two back and left it in my sister's care while I left for college. Unfortunately on one of my visits home, it appeared that she neglected it for some time and I found it dead in it's bowl. Not only that, but she also managed to kill her's (one I gave her as a gift) off too in the same way. I don't trust her with pets anymore

    I bought my two bettas from PetSmart. I feel like I liberated them. They’re in a 15 gallon tank with a divider, live plants, driftwood, a filter, heater, and they are extremely happy. I’m not sorry I did what I did. Regardless of what PetSmart does, I saved 2 beautiful bettas from a cup, or life in a vase, 1gallon, or 2 gallon tank. They really need a minimum of 5 gallons. Could I live in a studio apartment? Sure, but I like living in a house better.
