What a great find! The financial question about retirement is just numbers and you can either do it or you can't, depending on your goals. It's the psychological aspect that is most challenging to retirees, especially type A's who put themselves in a position to retire young. We retired and settled in Marco Island last year at 55. I spent 3 years preparing for the psychological challenge. Your channel is going to be very impactful to others. The presentation is top shelf! Can't wait for your Wednesday releases. -Tom
We purchased a home on Marco Island in 2012. In 2015 we decided to move from our home in Connecticut to Marco. At the time I was 55. For the past 7 years we spent 9 months on Marco and 3 in Connecticut. We have decided to move back to Connecticut. We realized friends and family were far too important. We too hate the cold so we will spend our winters in warmer climates. We love Key West and would like to explore other areas as well. Very important to mention the oppressive heat rain and humidity kick in as early as late April and extend well into October to early November. Locals call it rainy season where south Florida turns into a swamp with palm trees. Also having family and friends visit was great but not the same. Moving from a blue state to a deep red area of Collier County was the icing on the cake.
This video is SO helpful!! Thank you for sharing your process for how you made your decision. Going through this same journey now and it’s great to hear how it was a journey for you guys as well.
When I came first time to Florida, I just was thinking why I never visited this state before. I live in US more than 17 years on the west cost and could not imagine that Florida is so sweet. When, I came second time I knew, if I find the place somewhere around Naples I will buy right on the spot and I did. Now I have a big lot all upland ready to built. Yes, it is a lot of work to find good builders but I think I am lucky and all will be just great. I love Naples, I love sun and nature is cosmos. Thank you for brilliant video!
That’s great. It’s one of the best months there. Water is warm, it’s not too crowded, and the humidity has left. We don’t usually get down until end of October.
Great video guys! We have a Condo on Marco and spend 7-8 months on the Island. We call ourselves “Sun Birds”. One important thing to mention is that anyone planning to move to Florida full time needs to have a plan on going somewhere cooler for a month to six weeks a year to beat the heat. It’s oppressive.
Thanks so much for all your videos, I’m about half way through them all! I’m 57 and exactly a year away from giving my 7 months notice, after which, I will be taking 15 weeks of vacation. So makes it almost like I’m starting “semi retirement” during those months! I’m in financial services so I have a part time gig (20 hours a week) waiting for me with my planner when I retire. We went through the process you mention in this video and ended up in AZ. Though right now, we’re keeping our CO home until our youngest graduates college next year. Found we went through pretty much all of the steps you mentioned so the biggest thing I took away from this was “don’t be afraid”. We bought at the height of the market but also sold an AZ property we already owned just after the height, but most importantly, got in before rates went much higher, so its “cheap money”. Sort of rambling but the key is, if AZ doesn’t work out the way we think it does today, we still have a huge asset that we can always sell if needed, as you mention. We can’t wait to get their full time and start putting into practice many of the suggestions in your outstanding video series. Thanks again!

Still have about 10 - 15 years to retirement, but I am starting to "research & plan" for the future, and I cannot get enough of you two. Thanks so much for the videos !!!
Very refreshing to hear your thoughts. Almost everything you’ve done, we did to. The only difference was we settled in Arizona. Best wishes and thanks for sharing! 😎. PS- Just liked and subscribed!
I'm in a different phase of my life but I have really been thinking about moving to Florida. It seems like a dream at this point. My husband is on board on the initial thinking phase, and your advise and tips are wonderful! We have our first daughter leaving for college and 3 more at home in highschool, middle school and our caboose baby headed into 3rd grade. We run a successful real estate team in Oklahoma and not sure what business we would do, or how to make this dream a reality! Thank you for your great video and lots of great ideas!
I hope your dream becomes a reality. It certainly is easier once the kids have all moved out but we have met many families who have moved with children. Keep the conversation alive at home. Mark and Jody
Really like your chemistry together. Thank you for sharing your process. Florida was the answer for us too for all the reasons you stated. It was interesting that you considered other countries as well. Best of luck with your new future!
Hello from Tampa! I just found your channel. You two are so fun to watch! I’ll be viewing your other episodes. I’m looking to retire in one year at age 58 so I’m binging great content on your channel! 😊
Hi Dana and welcome from Marco Island! We are happy you are here and please binge away. We have a great series on leaving your career which I think you will love.
Thank you both for your videos. Sometimes you blow my mind by challenging my thinking about certain things. I really appreciate that. I feel like you are spurring me on to new growth. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your kind words! 😊 It means the world to us that our videos are encouraging you to think differently and inspiring growth. That’s exactly why we love sharing our journey-so glad it’s resonating with you. Thank you for being part of this with us!
Thanks Mark and Jody. I have a number of friends all over Florida so I’ve have talked about a move there a couple of times. Of course it’s a big state with a lot of varied places and lifestyles. Love how you identified a process which allowed you to have a “real conversation” and make the right decision for you for right now.
Not to mention the tax advantages. Our financial planner showed us the difference of us retiring in Florida (or New Hampshire) compared to Massachusetts ( where we are now). The savings ( for us) was huge
I enjoyed your video which was on point to what we did moving to Florida in 2002 from Connecticut. We decided that we needed to get a lake house back in Conn 4 years ago since we had 3 daughters and now 6 grandkids. Enjoy your retirement,
Another great video. My wife and I are planning a relocation to another country in Europe (we are from France). Your video helps a lot structuring the approach. I cannot agree more on the importance of the communication to avoid making unbalanced decisions.
Awesome & useful video ! Not to mention, what a beautiful couple. I love the way you look at everything involved in such a decision like including an ex-wife. It says a lot about you values that is lacking in today’s society. AMAZING !!!!!!! (Liked & subscribed)
We had the same thought about being someplace that the kids want to visit. We are planning on being about an hour from Orlando so we can take them and grandkids to Disneyworld.
This is at 4-5 months . How about an update? The bugs ? The humidity? Where do you ride bike? Concern over hurricanes? More thoughts on owning a second home. Why are you keeping the CT home?
Interesting timing on this question. We love it here and could actually stay longer. October 1-June 1. No bugs for the most part, humidity is gone in winter months. There are miles and miles of bike trails on all the roads. You are with traffic so must be careful. I tend to ride very early before heavy traffic. This is now our primary home. We are not convinced about what to do next with Ct home. Our kids are pretty spread out so thinking about all of that. What we do know is that the next 15-20 are our most important active lives so making decisions around that. We talk about this a lot.
Homeowners insurance is tough to find and it’s even harder to build a solid track record with any company as they aren’t all in the market year after year. We have found that to be the case as well. Thanks for your comment
Our mortgage is paid off in ohio. We plan on living in our paid off home and renting a beach front condo December thru April in Florida. Then coming back to a paid off home spring through fall. I have No desire to live in Florida in the summer.
Yes we have a home there. And we do have several people who stop in and check on our home. We also have cameras, water flow alarms, and heat sensors. It’s amazing the systems available today to monitor homes and great apps too.
We looked at all options and ended up in a 3 bedroom house that is a 1.5 mile walk to beach. When all our children visit at same time for holidays, we do a few rentals nearby to accommodate.
Checked into Dana Point , $2.5-3m gets you 1500-2000 Sqft with some views. The weather is perfect, but you take a state income tax haircut to get that weather.
We play golf at a semi private course about 20 minutes from Marco called Eagle Lakes Golf Club. You can book tee times a week ahead on an app called Golf Now. We looked into joining a club but very expensive and average of 7-10 year waiting list. If you buy inside a golf community, you can usually get into the club immediately
If your kids are scattered it means your lonely for Christmas but your kids will bring a army of kids you need a ranch estate with 20 rooms and 8 bathrooms
I love your channel, but as a native Floridian, it’s heartbreaking to see the impact of the huge influx of people coming in. Every green space is being razed to build more apartments and condos. Traffic has increased dramatically, and local favorite mom and pop businesses are driven out to give way to chains. I get that there are big draws here, but the impact is real.
Florida is beauatiful, but as people age, humidity is absolutely horrible for arthritis. Makes future mobility a problem. Dry heat is much better for bones and breathing.

There are lots of people from Minnesota down here. Check with your friends. And give renting for a month or two during the winter to try it out.
