    I am 44 and have watched this show all of my life. My grandmother started listening to it when it was a 15 min. soap opera. She watched both when ut transitioned to tv and overlapped for a number of years, I used to run home to watch the last 10 min in HS,. Phillip Spaulding was my knight in shining armor as I was in HS at the same time he saved Beth.. I love the good stories, and the bad. I loved Gus and Harley and i miss Gus. I loves Tammy and Jonathan and miss her. I miss Nola and Qqinton and the rest of the Reardons. There will never be another whow that has spanned generations and allowed men and women to share stories that touched us and brought us together. Thank you for so many years of memories. I will forever cherish the great and unforgettable Guiding Light in all of it's total glory of the 1990's. The TRUE golden era of this truly wonderful SOAP, second only to The Young and The Restless. Rest in total peace Guiding Light. As Elton John said, "your candle burned out WAY too soon". In my ♥ I live in Springfield for Eternity. From the late 1970s to the time Roger first "died" in 1980, this was the best soap on the air. It might have been the best television show on the air. It would never, ever again be that good. Michael Zaslow, a great actor, WAS "The Guiding Light" during those years. By the time it went off the air, it was a shadow of its former self. Too bad so much of that era from about 1977 to 1980 is lost because P&G didn't start archiving until 1978.

    When I first started watching soap operas, the
    first 2 were The Edge of Night and Secret Storm. I don't remember much about these 2 soaps probably because they might have went off the air in South Florida somewhere in the 60's. I started regularly watching The Guiding Light in the early 1980's. Outside of The Edge Of Night and Secret Storm and Dark Shadows, I started regularly watching the soaps in the 70's and 80's. The Guiding Light is the oldest of the soaps because it first started on radio before moving to television in 1950. It was mostly about the Bauer's, the Spaulding's, the Chamberlain's and the Lewis family and the Marler family.

    The series should have ended in the Bauer kitchen, focused on the Bauer family, perhaps flipping through a scrapbook started by Bert Bauer which would lead to multiple flashbacks from the show's golden years. There were so many pointless and irrelevant characters towards the end of this once-great drama. It really fell apart in 1983, and was a mess between 1984-88, then rebounded for a few years before collapsing completely and for good in the mid 1990s.

      Frankly, the show was nothing without Roger Thorpe and when they screwed him over as he was dying from ALS, they lost what remaining fanbase they had left.

    • @GodCreatesGays2
      @GodCreatesGays2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Double Agents The show kept being dealt a series of devastating, crippling blows, from the gratuitous destruction of the Bauer family and other vets in 1984, to the killing off Maureen Bauer, to the callous mistreatment of Michael Zaslow when he became sick. The fact that it staggered through years of abuse from the powers that be is a testament to the staunch loyalty of the viewers who kept hoping it would get better. It never did, and once even the die-hard fans lost hope, the show's fate was sealed. Like you, the way they treated MZ made me realize that the show would never ever come back.

      When a show does that to someone, there really is no coming back from that.

    • @GodCreatesGays2
      @GodCreatesGays2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Double Agents It was quite the heartless act, agreed. The show might have still recovered, if the offending executives were purged from P&G and the quality of the series improved dramatically, but that was not to be, alas.

      Yes, I would have loved for Leah Bauer instead of going to Springfield U, go away to maybe a HCBU to honor the Boudreau Family Tradition. Grandpa Ed gives her a very special Lamp and explained that The Reverend Rutledge's Grandfather had one in his house. He even gives her a Chess Game, and says "Whenever you have a problem, solve it over Chess like your Great Great Grandfather Frederick did." Yet seeing Leah look over The Family Album and seeing all of the people who came before her and have Ed, Rick, and even Holly smile.

    There are a couple of title cards that are missing. The one from 1967, when GL went to color, and the ones that re-introduced the lighthouse, from 1968 to 1975. Otherwise, a great final episode! I so miss (The) Guiding Light ... all of it, the good, the bad, the ugly, the indifferent. There was something in GL's spirit that always remained with the show, not matter how far off track it went.

    Did Phillip and Beth get married again? She's wearing a diamond ring, but Phillip doesn't have a wedding ring on. They said that Rick and Mindy were getting married the day after this. Mindy: "As long as he's (Rick's) on time for the wedding tomorrow." Phillip: "Don't worry, Mindy. I will get him there." I think that this was Phillip and Beth's wedding, and Rick and Mindy's was the day after. Probably why Beth had a white dress on.

    this show was a shell of itself by the end of the 90s and continued to go downhill, it looked nothing like the show of its great years late 1970s through about 1986. The only recognizable characters were the Lewises, Phillip, Rick, Beth and Lillian. The Coopers will never replace the Reardons although I liked Harley and Lucy.

      Eric Fields The shows heyday was late 70s to early 90s when it peaked. By 1998 the show was showing its age with its redundant story-lines and weak characters. The plug should have been pulled 10 years prior. Last few years of that show was unwatchable.

    • @heathermonroe1266
      @heathermonroe1266 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. The early 90's was fantastic in terms of storylines and the acting. By 1995 it seemed to have lost it's charm. Ratings started plummeting around that time and Reva coming back didn't help boost the ratings. Michael Zaslow( Roger) was fired for being sick and then came the cloning of Reva. By 1999 I was done watching the show and came back 10 years later for the final episode.

I watched this episode when it aired. I made sure I was home and I was like, THATS IT!?!? 😲 VERY DISAPPOINTED. Oh well. It's 2019 now and life goes on.

    Grew up watching this..i mean in mid 70s, you watched what your parents watched or nothing. Lol, but glad i did i grew up watching this, i remember all the characters thru the years.
    Some my favs, crazy Carrie, lucille wexler, nola reardon, darcy decker, reva, annie, mark, rebecca, Quinton, Lujack.
    I just never, in my wildest nightnares, thought this show would end. I thought in 2024, it would still be on.
    Idk it seems has though around 2007, its like networks waged war on daytime tv.
    Both my favs gl and atwt gone! Y&R i used to watch but never stuck with it, same with bold& beautiful. Now after, i began watching oltl,, then they took that away
    Since then ive given up watching soaps. Its matter of time, they will fully get rid of days of our lives. And my gut tells me general hospital soon. Thats why i never tried watching it.
    Soon my guess is young and restless and for a time bold and beautiful, will be back only soaps left on tv.
