    The advice on practicing neutral upper body while doing 180 degree turns is something I'm definitely going to spend time drilling next time I'm at the mountains. I've recently started getting my switch riding and carves to feel reasonably comfortable, in addition to improving my regular stance carving. Even though I'm getting decent at carving in both stances, things like moguls and trees have been intimidating and difficult, really appreciate the helpfulness of this video.

    • @snowboarddojowiz2928
      @snowboarddojowiz2928  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We can't pulling the tail of your board up. You just shift more your weight on front leg and this means that you move your pivoting axis to your front leg from your center of your board (or back leg).

    I know this is more than a year old but its worth asking, but when you are doing the rotate are you getting the board flat and then rotating with your hips then grabbing the heel or toe edge? i thought that you were suppose to do all the steering with just the front foot? Or is that just to start to get your feet into snowboarding? Definitely will try this on a blue run next weekend

    • @snowboarddojowiz2928
      @snowboarddojowiz2928  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can focus just on spinning your whole body quicker with your hips. So it's more like spinning on the hill.

    I'm the type of learning who likes a thorough explanation, but this is far too much talk and not nearly enough rock. I want to see a brief explanation followed by a demo. Three dudes in snowboard gear jumping around on a flat slope doesn't really connect the dots for me.

      @@snowboarddojowiz2928 My issue with the video is a bit more than the content not being suited to my learning style. Technique #1 is an adequate intro to short radius turns except it the rider is probably too upright and rigid during the turn, making this close to a linked side slip that sprays snow down the hill instead of a dynamic turn. Further, it's hard for me to see how techniques 2 and 3 are viable options in any terrain, especially on moguls. They put you more or less in the same unbalanced body position as the linked counter-rotational side-slip that you see so many novice and intermediate riders doing on the slopes, and it's obviously not a strong position to be in when going over the bumps given that the upper and lower body are not aligned over the working edge. If you actually tried doing #2 in moguls as you suggest, you'd be immediately thrown off balance. I appreciate the effort to help students learn snowboarding, but I think you're throwing way too much information at students here without enough guidance on how to apply these tactics to real-life situations.

    It looks perfect! I can't wait to try it out on my next trip. I have a small question. People say adjust your weight and let gravity leads the turn. This video looks a little more proactive in turning. Is one of them wrong? or I didn't understand them correctly?

    • @snowboarddojowiz2928
      @snowboarddojowiz2928  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Advice from your friend is more like a sensuous approach. So it might and might not work for someone. Especially on the steep slopes, people lose their balance easily and hard to adjust their balance. So you need to finish each turns quicker before losing your balance. But you should try your friend's advice too. No one knows if it works for your riding.👍
      When you align your shoulders to the board, it's when you are trying Method 1. The method3 might require you to align your shoulders to the board too. But with Method 2 you don't want to align your shoulders to the board. So, they are all different methods.👍

      After 20 seasons of teaching snowboarders, i found out that indeed the rear arm is really important, like you show (ofcoursw combined with other movements). Just pointing with front arm but not get the backarm in opposite direction, makes not much sense, theres no movement in shoulder then.

      Never use your upper body to turn. You should be teaching lower body movements. Toe side turn. Peelike a boy - start with your hip then knee bending then ankle flexing and torsional flexion of the board using ankle strength on the lead foot followed by the back foot until you are on your edge ... and heel side turns. Pee like a girl. Same leading movements with hip, knee ankle and foot/ board torsional flexion and followed by back leg until you are peeing like a girl. and no you should not switch edges faster actually by staying on your edge longer. It making wide J type turns it will teach edge control on heel and toe side alike. Oh and never ever use your upper body to turn. Bad bad bad habit. Your eyes lead while your lower body works and upper body remains static.
      No offense but this shit he is teaching is is kooky AF!!!!

BTW, the method in Step 1 worked well with my students tho. You should remember that any method won't work for everyone as yours won't work 100%. Then you should have more tips to teach. Hey thanks for your comment Niall!
      I hope you didn't skip the video between 3:30 and 3:50. 😂
      We don't recommend a counter-rotation in the video at all. You should watch it again carefully. 😀
      Counter rotation will minimize to turn your hips right and left, so your board will be minimized to spin right and left too. If you are struggling with steep slopes with counter-rotation, try to keep your shoulder straight to the hill and rotate your hips in the intended direction. So you can turn your board enough to control your speed and at the same time, you can start next turn quicker.
      I hope now you understand this tutorial better.👍

  • @randomname931

    Why not just heel brake because that’s what you’re essentially doing except you are alternating between heel and toe, going directly from one to the other.

    • @snowboarddojowiz2928
      @snowboarddojowiz2928  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is because people who just started learning this need to control speed between each turn. If they got better at switching edges and controlling speed, then, they will naturally start next turn quicker just like you mentioned.👍

    • @ckoch407
      @ckoch407 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You absolutely can make short radius turns on edge using sidecut and proper body rotation on much steeper than in the video. As long as its not too steep to flex and extend throughout the turn without gaining more speed than you can control, you can carve it. But I agree steep reaches a point where all you can do is side slip or fan your tail. @@iagreewithyou112
