Thank you!!
I just bought an old Army trailer that needs some TLC, and you just gave me the know-how and confidence to tackle the job myself - and I’m an old lady. Thank you SO much for this video!
@@BaptistJoshua So far, so good. I got it primed, the bed liner sprayed in, and changed out the hitch and some other hardware. Then I had to leave town for family reasons. It won’t take me long to finish up the final paint job when I get home.
To put the dust covers over the bearings, try a 1.5 or 2 inch PVC pipe cut about a foot+ long. It fits right on the rim of the cap, does not crush the cap and the foot long handle gives you better control to hold the cap perfectly aligned with the spindle as you tap it in.
Excellent work my dude! Just two things I noticed, get some grease on the hinges for your drop gate, and get some wire loom tubing on your light wires! Those thin gauge wires need protection from abrasion.
Great job! Thank you for showing how to do the wheel bearings. I have a cute little utility trailer that can use a little fixing and now I don’t feel so intimidated by the project.
Hey mate, just curious on the painting process, I saw you used a flap disc. Beyond that, did you use a rust converter or anything similar? And what was the paint you used? Wanting to clean up my trailer and make it look semi-presentable. Just doing my research before diving in head first 😅 cheers.
Nice job on the trailer. I had 5x10 TWF trailer a year ago, I rewired the trailer from front to back. I encased the harness in wire loom and used PVC from the tongue back so the harness was completely protected, only leaving a small section uncovered that plugged into the truck. I also used heat shrink tubing after the wires were spliced. Wish I had pictures of it but I sold the trailer
You know you've arrived when Super Clean sends a package out. Hahaha - I too got the Super Clean deal. It's awesome stuff and works on everything I've tried it on. Great work BTW!
If you go to Home Depot or Lowe’s grab you a handful of those cards in the paint section with the different color choices those were great for sticking in around the rubber and the side of the rim. I did on lawnmower tires and worked great and then just throw away. Best part is there free!
Very nice! I'm getting ready to do the same thing to a 16' tandem axle trailer, but I have to cut the gate off, straighten it and weld on new hinges. I'm going to put used oil on my boards. The most impressive thing in the video is that there is someone out there that still knows how to grease a bearing!
The floor board replacement was interesting. My old bed was rotted enough that when I drove a load of junk to the dump I just tore the bed out right there. I don't have a welding rig or experience and I've been contemplating how I get the new planks in with both ends captured by steel. Thought I'd have to grind the front flat bar off and then bold a replacement with angle steel but the method you used has given me another option. How many boards did you have to flex to get into place?
I've seen this method a few times, but it's a little time consuming and risky. Instead of grinding the whole front flat bar off, just grind an 8" or 12" gap - whatever is the size of your widest board. Then simply push the boards into the steel "trap" at the other end of the trailer and set them down through that gap at this end of the trailer. Slide them left & right til you're down to the last board. After you set that one in, put a wide washer on it and drive a hole through the board and through the metal flap below. Then put a bolt through that hole and tighten it underneath. From then on, any time you wanna re-do the boards, you just reverse that bolt out and change all your boards, then punch a hole in the last board (up through the hole you left in the bottom flap). Re-do the bolt and you're done. If you are concerned about moisture getting into the hole of that one final board, you could put a sealant around the washer you added at the top & bottom of the board. Bottom line - you can reduce the work of changing out boards to tightening & loosening a single bolt. No more standing on 3 bent boards under pressure - which might be really hard if you're working on a shorter trailer with less length for the boards to flex. And no more knocking the post out of the way while they snap back into shape. (though, I've seen some do that with a jack from underneath so there's no snapping the board back into shape - you just lower the jack slowly and the board slides into place.)
Absolutely beautiful job!! The before and after pics really tell the story of your hard work. The only and I mean only thing I’d do differently is to make new pins for locking the tailgate in the up position and to weld short lengths of chain to them so when they’re removed they wouldn’t be lost.
Job well done my friend. I just bought a trailer for $100. And I'm going to bring it back to life with somw of your content.💪🏿 What type od paint did you use?
Hey nice job how did u connect the side lights to which cables you know those lights comes with a red and black but im trying to figure to what cables any help please
Very nice!! Algorithm must of sent this to me. Lol. Just prepped and painted 2 days ago (rims included of course) and picked up the wood yesterday. (Currently raining) Adding Thompson's water seal also when rain lets up. Just have to run my new electrical and reflective markers, get taillights installed and install the wood. Wasn't able to do all I wanted but it's gonna look similar to yours and that will be a badass result. 👍🏼. Rags to riches!!! Love doing renovations and seeing the results. Good job, bud!
Looks great!!! Just missing the tounge jack lol. That folding one will honestly give you more clearances though, so not too much hate on that one. I like that trick of getting the last board installed, that’s clever!
Nice. Did you use primer/rust stop before painting? Mine also has a center jack that hits the tailgate, good solution. Sticky shelf paper for masking tires?
What grinder pad did you use on the grinder to smooth out? The one that is blue. You don't have that listed on links? If anyone else knows, please let us know.
What is that blue disc you used to sand the rust off? I need to get some of those. I have a trailer I was given by a family member and it's almost exactly like this one in size and setup. It's a 5x10 with that mezzanine ramp. It needs to same restoration treatment as the one in this video.
You did a great job on it and your video was enjoyable to watch. What did you use to bow your boards and trip it out so easily. Just a piece of scrap wood? Thank you for taking the time to record and post.
What type of wood did you use? And what dimensions? My trailer might be exactly like yours and im trying to figure out the type of wood and dimensions and if I have to cut to make it fit Thank you!
Nice work. Goes to show that quality work can be done with the "not so expensive" tools. You'll probably want to put another coat or two of the Thompson's on the wood before winter and maybe another in the spring. The stuff works, just not for long. Easy to add coats though. Avoid polyurethanes and spar varnish, they'll check and flake when the UV beats them up.
Great job but I have 2 questions first did you use self priming paint or did I miss part of this and also you said the tires were new did you check the date code I bought a trailer built in 1997 and the tires were dated 1996 that made them26 years old just something to think about. I replaced mine.
The trailer came out wonderful. I don't think I could do all of that, being a 67 yr. old female with some disabilities. So I'm going to cheat a little. I still landscape, I can cut all day, but this is a little much for me. I'm thinking of getting black deck paint instead for the wood, boards are fine. The rest I'll spray paint and let the trailer guy do the wheel hubs. lol. Or maybe I can borrow you.lol Again great video, you are very talented.
I have a 5 x10 trailer. Will I be able to use a board to install the boards like you installed them. Or is the wood to short to bend it so it will fit under the rail?
Great job and well edited video as well! I have a 5’x12’ trailer I’m gonna do in a couple weeks. It’s about 12 years old but maybe not as bad of shape as yours? We shall see once I get into it? Lol!!!
I'm in the process of doing pretty much everything you did to my 30 year old 5x10 cargo trailer, but adding a 3" lift as well and my only question is, what paint did you use?
Nice work! I have the same trailer and I want to do the same thing but keep putting it off. How did you attach the planks to the frame? Did u have to drill and tap new holes? Self tapping screws? Thanks!
Good job on that trailer man. I’m about to paint my 5x10 utility trailer. How much paint do think it might take? I don’t want to buy to much and have it laying around.
I am confident enough to now be able to restore a small trailer I just got.

this is awesome man. 2 questions. did you not have the need to screw the boards down? and 2 how much was the total cost of everything said and done

Did you add any thing to the paint to make it thinner to spray or did you just use as is what paint did you use??
