I went and watched my husband's aunt make these so I could learn. She's 101 now. By the time I got to her house she had already measured and sifted her flour so I had no idea how much she used. I saw her old handwritten recipe on the table, it was written in Greek. I took a picture of it so my husband could tell me the amount of flour to use. Well, she didn't have flour written down anywhere on her recipe!!! She kept telling me you just add enough until it feels right. Her instructions for the nut mixture you sprinkle on top said to add cinnamon "until it smells nice". So, I still have never made these. Thank you for your recipe. I will now try and I'll even bring her some :)
How sweet! That's how all of the recipes that I get from my aunts are...lol! I hope that you enjoy them and that your husband's sweet aunt does too! happy Holidays :)
Haha I laughed so hard when I read this. It's the exact same reason why I searched Dimitra's recipe. My mom's recipe has been passed down from her aunt and there's no flour amount either. Ti na kanoume? 😅
35 years ago, when I was learning how to cook, recipes like that were bringing me to tears. Now I’m doing it myself 😂. I also have recipes that only have ingredients, no method, as it is clear from the ingredients how to cook it. I know, old age!
I made them today for our Orthodox Easter this Sunday, they came out amazing…I made them for Christmas as well, greetings from Australia Dimitar and Kalo Pascha🙏
I made these today, nearly the same, but added a little butter with oil and a few crushed walnuts to mixture!: Mine were delicious and hubby loved them, but they are very delicate and i think i left them in syrup a bit too long as my first few fell apart, and then i dipped them for a shorter time and this helped! 💕
I have three recommendations for your great recipe ... which I make myself for all festive occasions. First, do not dip the Melomacarona into hot syrup they will crumble and fall apart when you dip them in hot syrup. dip them in cool syrup Second, If you brush some honey on the Melomacarona the chopped walnuts will stick better ! Third, add some orange-based brandy (Grand Marnier liquer) to the cooled-down syrup because the heating in the oven will destroy (remove) the orange juice flavours! As for the name Melomacarona: it is derived from the words Meli (Honey in Greek) and Macaron (Pasta-like in Italian). And the recipe was imported to the Ionian Sea Islands (Eptanysia) by the Venetians from the East Med. Sea, most likely from Lebanon.
My Pappou had always loved making these for the holidays until he unexpectedly passed in September (this year) and I as his Oldest granddaughter has to step in to make these for my family in honor of him. Couple years ago, him and I even made these for my bake sale as I worked at Old Navy in 2014. I miss and loves you Pappou Spiro!
These look so yummy I have to make them this year! Alternatively, could you also press the cookies up side down into a bowl of chopped walnuts? I’ll be transporting these and want to minimize losing the topping.
So excited to make these this weekend! A fave with my family, I'm surprising them this Christmas! My yia yia made the best melomakarona ever but we all know how recipes are handed down in Greek families! lol. Your recipes are always amazing Dimitra, I've tried so many and each one comes out perfectly. I'm confident this recipe will be just as perfect! Thank you, Dimitra!
I’ve heard of these cookie Dimitra but never had them before, those look so tasty, I will have to give them a go one day. I’m so used to the Italian cookies my mother used to make but it’s time to try new cookies, I will make them. Thank you
omg! these look delicious! How did you learn to cook? Did you go to school or home taught? I would be happy to cook half as good as you, all recipes I've tried so far turned out great. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Hello Dimitra, Thank you so much for simplifting this amazing cookie recipe….I can’t wait to make them! My wife and I go crazy for them and I’ve always shyed away from maki g them bc I watched my Greek friends mothers making them and am intimidated to try. You make them with such calmness and ease, hopefully I can do that too😳🙏🏻😊 Thank you again for another amazing recipe😊
Hi and thank you so much!! You can do it! I have a different recipe (even easier than this) where they're rolled and cut out. You can use that method if you'd like. I'd love to know how they turn out :) Happy Holidays!
Dimitra I made these cookies for my son and his dad. I also made a platter of Christmas cookies using the koulorakia butter cookies. I sent you pictures on your Facebook page. Thank you so much for you amazing recipe. Happy holidays kukla!
I made these cookies and they are awesome! I’ve eaten many and I like your recipe as well as my Aunt’s recipe. I had one problem, the cookies soaked up so much syrup they were wet, tasted great, but wet. The first batch I soaked for longer than 20 sec. The second batch soaked for 20 seconds. I loosen the flour before using so it’s not packed. The dough was pliable and not sticky at all. I don’t remember them being soggy, is this normal? Thanks, Mary
I'm going to attempt these for the first time this year but I'm pretty sure you can add cognac or brandy but not sure how much of it please? If anyone can let me know, much appreciated. Thank you! 😊
I’m considering making these this weekend for a cookie party and many of the recipes I’ve seen use half orange juice and half cognac. Have you tried it that way?
This is amazing! I’m baking for someone with a citrus allergy. Do you think apple skin/juice would be a good substitute for the orange zest and juice? Thanks ❤
Hello, you could try with apples, pineapples or even cranberries (I think pomegranate would work too). Maybe make a smaller batch for yourself first and see if the flavor is on your taste 😁
If you have to make them ahead of time, can I heat the syrup and dunk the cold melomakarona? I know you’re supposed to do it the other way around, but can’t do so for this batch. Worried that they won’t soak liquid properly…
@@DimitrasDishes actually one more question how far in advance can I make them? Can I make the dough prep and freeze them before baking? How does that work . I would like to serve them for Christmas
Helpp!! My first time making these cookies and my dough was very crumble-y - I couldn't roll them to form an oval without it falling apart. What did I do wrong ?? On a side note....they still tasted good aside from the way they looked lol
Same happened to me-the recipe says 500 g of flour that’s about 2 1/2 cups of flour NOT 3 1/2 as intimated. Also the dipping not 10minutes per side but 10seconds
Will these be alright without the syrup ? They look wonderful and the flavor pairings sound delicious but I just don’t like syrup poured on baked goods.
Actually, when we had our bakery, I would always set a few cookies that weren't soaked in syrup for my cake decorator. She loved them like that! However, I would add more sugar to the batter to make them a bit sweeter :)
The cookie looks way too dry , 10-15 seconds for each side is not enough. I soak mine for 2 minutes (30 gram cookie) and they taste similar to the store bought ones. Sorry but if it is not properly soaked it will not taste good 😐.....

Looking forward to making these, as I've never made them before.

Thank you Dimitra🤗🥂
Those two cookies are the best!! Let me know how they turn out :)
Hi, Dimitri! I haven't commented in a while, but I'm a steadfast fan!💕😄 I just wanted to wish you a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!😄

Zorbas favourite dish..😂 From the widow. Love these cookies
So good!
Cooking honey lowers its quality, and it loses essential enzymes and nutrients. So add the honey when you take it off the heat. Good job Dimitra!!!!
Oh yum. Can you please figure out how to make these gluten free? I miss them the very most.
Yum! My favourite! 💙 😋
Mine too! I just had one with my afternoon tea :)
This looks very similar to cookies my Yiayia would make called Finikia. Is there a difference or just another name for the same cookie?
Finikia is the Cypriot word for Melomakarouna ! My mom is from Cyprus my dad from Greece ! Best of both Beautiful Countries!
If you have to make them ahead of time, can I heat the syrup and dunk the cold melomakarona? I know you’re supposed to do it the other way around, but can’t do so for this batch. Worried that they won’t soak liquid properly…
Hi there...could I use juice from mandarins instead of oranges? I have a tree full outside ...
Hey dimitra. I want to put them in the cupcake cups do I place them immediately in the cupcake cups or should I let them sit for a while?
Hey! Yes, let them sit for a while and then transfer them to the liners 😊
@@DimitrasDishes actually one more question how far in advance can I make them? Can I make the dough prep and freeze them before baking? How does that work . I would like to serve them for Christmas
I thought you were supposed to put the cooled biscuits in hot syrup
Hi, they look great! What can l use instead of nuts?
You can leave the topping out :)
@Dimitra's Dishes happy Christmas to you and your family. I love your vides l am from England
I was thinking sesame seeds or chopped pumpkin seeds?
@Natalia Lopes I am trying pumpkin seeds this year (no walnuts here due to allergies). Leaving the topping off makes these cookies VERY sweet.
@@natalialopes719 Just updating - I used pumpkin seeds this year and they were perfect!
can i use regular olive oil
👍🏻👍🏻
Can we freeze them
Any thoughts on how to make these gluten free? The flour is easy but what could replace semolina?
You can just leave the semolina out completely. My original recipe doesn't have any semolina:th-cam.com/video/e8AeWlW1WzY/w-d-xo.html
